Second port of call on Saturday 18 after starting at the Odd One Out, Purple Dog, Foresters and ending at the Victoria. Very good pub the New Inn, we all had the Grain Blackwood Stout at 5% which was excellent and went superbly with the all-day breakfast that we had around 13.30! I followed this up with a Grain 3.1.6 which was very light coloured dry and hoppy, it certainly stood up to the flavoursome stout. Sat in what I suppose is the saloon which is more comfortable and where you have to ring a bell for service. 8/10

Went once, wouldn't go again! Was like the scene from American werewolf in London where everyone stopped talking and looked at us when we walked through the door. Also whoever runs their facebook page leans towards a particular football club, whilst being gobby about other clubs. I don't normally have a problem with football banter, but a pub shouldn't really have such allegiance should it? I've given it 1 point because it does real ale!

Visited on 20 April before the dismal yawn fest at the WHCS (0-0). CAMRA bore guide app says it's open at 10.30 Saturday, it wasn't open by 11.35 so went to the Playhouse first. Came back and had a couple of beers, a ruby which was pretty good and the Colchester AK which was golden and fairly bitter; the boys had the mild which I tasted and confirmed why I can't stand 95% of milds, it was brown tasteless dishwater, a homeopathic brew in that it is water with a memory of beer. Largely uninteresting choice of ales overall, though I had a burger and chips for £6 which was just the right amount. 7/10

In Colchester with the wife to sample some of the real ale pubs I've been told so much about from my niece . Nice little pub the New in is, but slightly off put by the fact that the positive reviews on here are apparently from the landlord himself!? (Dalai Farmer) Aside from that, nice pint, good price and an open fire. Looks like its having some work done an feels a little unloved. Over all if you're passing worth a look but not worth going out of your way for.

A rare visit to my home town to see the mighty U’s put on a predictably miserable display. Luckily I fortified myself by visiting the New Inn and the Victoria. The New Inn had a lovely porter on which I thought was from the Colchester brewery though I couldn’t find details on their website. I could have happily stayed all afternoon drinking that even though it was 5% (and wished I had at 4.45pm); I also had the Nethergate Augustinian which was excellent. My friends started on the Brightlingsea Brewing Co ale which they didn’t like so I gave it a miss. Very good ales and a great start to the day’s drinking. 8/10

Well then. I am back for another review!!!
The New Inn is still a cracking little pub, and still open seven days a week, from midday till eleven on Monday till Thursday, and again Saturday. Friday it is open until midnight, and sunday it closes at half ten.
The real ales are even better now as the Landlord has placed a sixth beer engine on the bar! Blooming Marvellous!!! Eagle IPA from Wells & Young is still the house ale, and the other five are all locally sourced from micro-breweries. And the landlord also brews his own beer which is on tap whenever possible!
And the bestest news yet; they now do food Wednesday to Saturday, and a brilliant lunch on Sunday/ not an Aunt Bessie Yorkie in sight. The food is extremely well priced, the weekly menu is all below 7.00 for a very generous portion of home cooked food, and the Sunday lunch is a pawltry 6.50 for a huge plate of food! I challenge anyone to walk away unsatiated...
All in all this is a cracking little pub; live music, real fires, perfect ales, fantastic selection of Single Malt Whisky, superb wine list, and free parking.
What more could you want...??

I would just like to reiterate the comments made by Dalai Farmer. The couple he refers to took the New Inn to the brink of extinction. Under their stewardship the choice of ales was limited to say the least & the quality of these ales ranged from poor to undrinkable.
During this sorry period the level of customer service was pitiful, on one occasion I had to ask the 'landlord' who was playing the fruit machine to serve me & I was curtly told to 'wait! I'm playing'. During the Christmas period the pub was unheated because the 'landlady' 'couldn't be bothered'. Needless to say I banned myself from the premises.
Now thankfully the previous regime has been reinstated and in a two month period the pub has gone from strength to strength. They constantly have a changing selection of excellent ales in good condition.
I have resumed using this fine public house & I would urge others to do the same. They will not be disappointed.

And I forgot to mention that the reviewer KevinCook is the ex-landladies father, so sycophantic is may be ...

And the truth about the last review. The couple that took over from the previous manager were diabolical. The beer was very badly kept, the place was not looked after properly and the ambiance was awful. In the two months they were there they almost killed the pub. Thank God the original landlord is back. The beer is back on top form (now there are 5 beer engines) and changing very quickly, so the chance of a dud beer has gone, unlike before!
All I can say is they were awful people and totally wrong for the pub, any pub. The damage they caused was inexcusable. If they cause The New Inn to miss out on the good beer guide this year there will be quite a few people baying for blood...

A real fire warm and friendly pub with good range of ale's, nothing is any trouble for the staff for customer satisfaction, music nights with the young lady working there with a fantastic voice, singing a range of songs from the 60's to modern day, they also hold theme food nights once a month the last being a morrocan night which was so tasty free no cost to the customer except your drinks

A proper old fashioned boozer. Feels like a local pub in town - Fantastic! Eagle IPA as a house beer with 2 others always changing. The landlord is adding a 4th hand-pull soon (I am reliably informed) and also wants to start holding small beer festivals! And it is now a freehouse as it has been bought from Admiral Taverns so the beer is very well priced - 2.00 for a real ale at the moment!!!
It is only a nine out of ten due to the lack of food, which is being addressed as I write...

Nice and new venue you wont feel left out if not a local.

Friendly traditional community local pub. Three hand pumps, two in front bar and one in the rear. Flowers IPA, Brakspear Bitter and OHanlons Firefly on whilst I was there. I think it was 2.70 a pint here. I recognised a few of the customers from other ale pubs in the town. All the beer I tasted was in good condition and a good temperature. The friendly landlord and landlady mentioned that the pub is owned by Admiral. It is on a surprisingly big site with a large undercover smoking area and a nice well kept garden with many seats. There is also a private separate room that you can book for private parties/meetings. The pub also has a small car park which is great for the area as Yevad or Davey points out. Much better than I remembered from my last visit and will definitely come again soon.

nice little local, friendly staff - good darts team

Friendly and welcoming, if rather small. A small carpark, which is superb considering its location. There was only one real ale available when I went (Flowers), but it was superb quality and well kept. I had only planned to stay for one, but enjoyed it so much that I had to have another!
