Traditional pub brought back to life as a 'gastro pub', choice of 3 real ales with 2 from Locale breweries.
Very busy on the lunchtime I visited, with people both drinking and eating.
Large menu with plenty of good choice at to be honest for the area decent prices. My belly of pork and 2 pints of Knights of the Realm from the Windsor & Eton brewery was very good.
Attractive & attentive bar staff add to the whole package of this very good pub in the heart of historic Shepherds Market.
Upstairs dining room which I can imagine gets booked up very quickly.
Thoroughly decent pub that should be visited.

Went here for a cheeky after work pint-what I find! Easily the best pub in the area with a brilliant selection of beers. The staff knew what they were on about too! Will definitely be back for more!

Cosy pub with a good atmosphere and a very good selection of beers - the Monsoon IPA was great, they also had a few white beers. The food looked decent.

A far better place than Ye Grapes or Kings Arms across the road.
Doombar (is there a pub in London that doesn't offer this?) Sambrooks and Itchen Valley. 3.70 a pint but at least the glasses were full without having to ask for a top up and the staff were polite and efficient. Quality was Ok,

Popped in last night for a quick one. This pub seems to have changed personality many times over the years but I like what has been done recently.
The pub was fairly quiet but this was only a Tuesday night so understandable.
I had a good pint of Brewdog 5AM Saint - from the tap so presumably a keg but very good and a great alternative to a cask real ale. Other interesting beers were available on draught and in bottles so I will probably go back to try a few more. The food looked tempting too.

The former ONeills has received a bit of a trendy makeover and on my visit was a lot noisier and crowded than its neighbours. Plenty of people eating (and food looked and smelt good) as well as goups of drinkers both inside and out. The decor is somewhat eclectic with a mixture of high stools, tables and the odd sofa. Of particular note is a sofa arrangement in the back corner around a large marble topped coffee table. It is also worth mentioning that there were no spare seat when I arrived so I was forced to stand at the bar - if you want a table here at lunchtime get in early.
The drinks offering here was pretty impressive (the range reminded me of the Crown and Two Chairmen in Soho but don't know if its the same owners). Three ales on offer - Doom Bar, Wandle and Centurion Ghost Ale - as well as Addlestones and Aspells Cider. The lagers on tap ranged from the common (Becks, Staropramen and Heineken) to the more unusual (Peroni, Estrella Damm, Kirin, Pilsner Urquell) through to more exotic continental brands (Fruli, Leffe, Franziskaner)
I did like this pub but it was a bit noisy for a lunchtime and I found the Shepherds Tavern preferable on that basis. I would imagine it gets quite raucous in the evening so if that is you thing it is probably a place to visit.

Have been to the Market Tavern a few times now, and enjoyed each one. Always a good range of well kept guest beers (had good pints of Leeds Best and Sambrook's Wandle). Busy with the after work crowd (which included us) and had to stand all night, but thankfully plenty of staff around and relatively easy to get served.

Perhaps better than it should be, although it's already looking a bit tired and the food was so-so at best (to be expected if you watch the pre-prepared fare being offloaded into the cellar).
Entertaining for the enraged stares from the old buffer in the flat opposite who is not impressed by this place's increased popularity.

Now the Market Tavern, probably the trendiest of the four Shepherd Market pubs I went to - had bath ales' Golden Hare on, which is often a sign of upmarketness. bath ales seem to buck the trend for ale not being fashionable - though if it was. Just think. I would hope that if it were, it didn't entrain the kind of snobbiness that happens with wine. Went outside because it was too full inside (and it was a nice evening until it started chucking it down). A gentleman in a fluoro jacket came along and told me to stand behind the line. I could not see the line and with several others agreed that it must be an imaginary line (though in fairness, it did result in people standing drinking in one street and not in the other round the corner, and chummy was not unpleasant about it). I would return.

Nice bar, Fruli on tap. only downside no table and chairs outside, so can be uncomfortable if you are a smoker, apparently the council objected to having tables and chairs outside. European cafe culture, *I dont think so.

i quite liked this place - good quality beer and the girl serving us in the upstairs bar last week was brilliant - witty, informed, happy..
really very small and pokey toilets tho....

Much better from it's previous incarnation as the faux Irish establishment O'Neill's. Mayfair was crying out for a bar like this the decor is retro 1970's but feels and looks right. A good selection of continental lagers, some real ales(not my scene) good wine list and extensive range of spirits. As for the bar staff no complaints there very friendley and professional. clean and tidy establishment, couldnt imagine the hopheads liking this place too upmarket for them. A good place to have a drink before watching a film at the Curzon. I have to conclude that this is the best establishment in the area, apart from Windows the bar on the top floor of the Hilton.

Now called the Market Tavern after a complete refurb. Gone upmarket as is the trend these days, could fair well in this area. Extensive range of lagers and 3 real ales on when i visited, very dimly lit with fairly indifferent staff.

I think this pub is great happened to come across it one evening and was pleasantly suprised, not over crowded but pleasantly busy and somewhere to sit(always a bonus!) And its the first pub where when I asked for a glass of nice white wine I was offered a good selection and helped in my choosing by the very friendly bar person! I and my friends thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are planning on stumbling across this pub again! well done Staff!!

Have been a few times now and each time I am not dissapointed. Beer and Guiness are good and the staff were extremely friendly. I had the good fortune to meet the manager last week who turned out to be a very knowlegable and in fact quite a funny pub landlord although his quiff is rather odd.
|
The least authentic, least real, least charming pub in the area. Had a horrible gassy pint of Bulmers draft which made me feel ill (the London Pride was off). Was able to get a seat, only plus point.

Simly the best Friday evening pub in Shepards Market!

This wasn't that bad of a pub. At least the service was good and it was better than sitting at the grapes staring up at ceiling bored out of yer effing skull.

We went to this pub two years ago after my mate ran the London Marathon and i have to say it was one of the best pubs i have ever been to after a London Marathon. The Quality of the Strong Continental Lager was second to none and i will be looking forward to returning there this year.

Probably the worst of the 4 pubs in Shepherd's Market. It draws you back because you are more likely to get a seat - however, I think that this is because the locals have decided that it is not worth the effort. My abiding impression of this pub was that the ales were bog-standard Irish rubbish that could be served up anywhere, and that the bar staff were hopeless, being more interested in hanging about the rear of the pub smoking fags and wishing they were back home in Mostar or wherever. Avoid.

i have only been here out of choice once. says it all i think.

Thanks to a recent cost-cutting measure, meals such as burgers that would usually come with a generous side portion of chips now only get the smallest portion imaginable - lucky to scrape into double-figures. What used to be a great value pub lunch is now a right royal ripoff. Be warned!
