Visited here before the football at Carrow Road. A classic local with GK staples and a guest from Castle brewery Nottingham. A pleasant welcome by the barmaid. I had the guest which was excellent. There is a lovely old bar billiards table in the back bar. Worth a visit but quite a step to the ground so plan a route with a few stops - there is plenty of choice.

Like many Norwich pubs we visited, a small, cosy and old fashioned interior.

After three attempts to go in a pub but refused because I had a dog - I was welcomed with open arms in here.
Abbot Ale was excellent.
Have 10/10 for being the only pub in Norwich that made me, and my well behaved pooch, feel welcome.
Up yours, the Adam and Eve.

Great pub. Good beer in a lovely cosy atmosphere. Must be in the Norwich top ten of boozers.
|
Hosts a quiz every Sunday night from 8.30pm - very well attended between 6 and 12 teams regularly appear, including the notorious 'Cash For Questions'. Quiz masters rotate and they're always looking for new ones. No entry fee - prizes are in beer. Food available includes the 'Quiz Combo' which could prove addictive.
Beers OK - Abbot and IPA plus some unusual guest beers

Usual boring GK beers tempered by some interesting guest ales. Good reasonably priced food, a rarity for the city.

Absolutely nothing wrong with this place, beer Greene King well kept and served by decent staff, welcoming sort of place. However, for anyone who can remember the Golden Star of old it's difficult not feeling just a little disappointed!

Popped in on another of my visits to Norwich, staying at the nearby Premier Inn. Pleased to say nothing has changed except the credit crunch beating Green King IPA at 1.99 is 50p cheaper! An excellent pub.

Greene King pub. Stay away. Used to be one of the few Norwich boozers that sold real ale in th 70s and 80s, but now look at it.

This a great traditional pub - I hadn't been in there for about 20 years and it has hardly changed since although it's much less smokey now!
I spent last Saturday afternoon there with a couple of mates drinking real ale and playing darts. 4 real ales, all under 3.00 starting with Greene King's IPA at 2.50 - nicely kept and reasonably priced.
|
Very pleasant and comfortable Greene King pub which offers more than the usual Greene King IPA and Abbot, extending the range with pretend guest beers from breweries GK have taken over and closed down and whose beers they have synthesized in recent years. I didn't think the prices were particularly expensive-anything less than 3.00 a pint seems OK these days- and I enjoyed the plesant relaxed atmosphere.

Held in affection because this was the first pub I visited in Norwich in 1992. Nice little place, good real ale, but can be a bit dear.

Have only started drinking in the Star again recently as my first experience 12 months ago wasn't very inspiring. I must say that a lot has changed - it's a much nicer place to drink now! Congratulations to landlady Lily/Liz for whatever she did to improve the place - it's worked. Prices are still a little bit on the high side and a couple of the staff could do with cheering up a bit, however the atmosphere is much nicer now than it was 12 months ago!

one of the worst pubs i have been in bad food dirty toilets and grumpy old staff

Considering its location opposite a Uni dorm and Norwich art school its likely most people wont hold out much hope for the Star. And its true that if you do decide to head in for a tipple, you will have to share the place with the odd green haired pillock discussing post-modern landscapes with a multi-pierced bald girl called Stardust.
However, the owner has adopted the commendable strategy of trying to deflect as many students from walking through their doors as possible cue a natural, small and winding interior, a wide drinks selection and bar staff with an average age in their mid 40s. The clientele and environment are therefore much more appealing than you may expect
Unfortunately a downside of its intrinsic student repellent is a very high pricing policy which effortless and rather strangely makes it one of the most expensive pubs in Norwich. Equally the more mature staff behind the bar can be a rather grumpy lot and their not going to be shortlisted for any quick service awards.
As a result, despite some nice touches there are a couple of substantive niggles that take off the shine.
7/10
