The Steam Packet has recently reopened (2009) after extensive (and expensive, probably) refurbishment work. They've done a good job in the improvements and it's a nice cosy little boozer once more, with some nice real ales. I think there is supposed to be a restaurant upstairs but I'm not sure if it is open yet. I can thoroughly recommend giving the pub a look.

Closed. It's as though someone just walked out and locked the door behind them as all the pub paraphanalia, tables and chairs, bar, blackboards with menus etc can still be seen through the windows.

Apparently one of a number of pubs being sold off by Adnams as a result of the smoking ban. Since Adnams specialize in premium real ales and previous posts suggest some customers here don't want good beer, this may end up being a good thing for the pub's future- it's always been an uneasy mix of good beers and noisy music, so under a new owner it may find a new identity as a music/young people's venue.

decent beer but very quiet on my only visit

The're doing what they can for live music in a tiny little gaff. Can't stand Adanams beer but lots of people seemed to like it. Well managed, limit to what they can do given the size constraint.

It's a small Adnams tied house. Beer was reasonable, but music was too loud. It has a beer garden at the front, but as this pub is on the ring road the sound of traffic dominates.
