It's not a 'Hogshead' it's called The Bakers. The photo needs changing.

Training on how to pull a hand pump beer is essential. I will be looking.
Quite a decent Greene King pub, seating is available on two floors. Downstairs tends to show Sky Sports on the TV. The usual Greene King ales as you'd expect.
swift one in here when visiting family.......its a 'ok but not one thats going to stick in your memory'. very busy as town sent pub- average.
Average pub. Beer rather good though.
Same pub wortman, it used to be a Hogshead
It' s the Bakers Arms, isn't, it? so why is there a picture of the Hogshead here?? Get a grip admin...do your stuff!
Visited here recently - not sure what is really nice about it. Mostly this is a bar with big tv screens. The staff appeared uninterested. At least you had a great time Kate! Green King Ales

Formerly the Hogshead and much improved visually and in ambience but sadly the beer is still not worth dropping in for; Greene King IPA and Old Speckled Hen. Unfortunately I'd ordered a pint of IPA before I spotted the Strong Suffolk bottles behind the bar, definitely a missed opportunity. Loads of lagers, a couple of ciders, Guinness but no smooth, there are however lots of CCTV cameras and tellies. Oh and the name is completely 'armless.....

Definitely called "The Bakers" the arms are no longer attached to the Baker!!
Called the Bakers Arms (not the Bakers). Only two handpumps, GK IPA and OSH. Beer quite cheap. I ordered a Greek Salad which was perfectly edible but no Greek would have recognised it. It had lettuce (Greek salad doesn't), but no capsicums, and a rather elaborate sauce instead of just olive oil. And the cheese wasn't feta, and there didn't seem to be any herbs.
IMHO the pub is over-televisioned, at least in the lower area.
Spot on there bish80,the refit made the place look good again but all the old faces have taken up residence again and it is now back to how it was before. At least they have all been herded into one place so you can go elsewhere for a quiet drink.Mind you if you are looking for cheap aftershave it"s worth dropping by!
The only good thing about this place is 2.00 a pint for Carling. But this turns into a negative because it means that this pub is ALWAYS full of drunken idiots who have just spent their benefit money on the stuff. Avoid.
Refurbished - yes! And is now fantastic. Previously would not have entered my foot inside, now a great lunch place with good coffee, place for a chat and even a reasonable area outside. My French colleagues stated it had the best chicken they ever had! Now that's something. The food menu is reasonably priced too.
After another refurb' it's cleaner and brighter, and they've even re-tiled the toilets! Hopefully they'll keep it clean this time so you can breath down there!
But... They've only got 2 hand pumps, and one will always be GK I.P.A. It seems they got their way and are getting rid of the real ale as they tried to in April 05, Now trying to be much more of a 'trendy bar' then a pub.
Closing down for three weeks to be refurbished and opening back up as the Bakers! so it has lost it"s Arms! interesting to see how it copes without them when it re opens
Ah yes, but with the one next door you can have all this for half the price.
So bad during day I thought I was on the set of Shameless. You only go to this place to spend your war pension,, get murdered, murder someone else, get hassled by some old drunk, trip out on the toxic smell from the gents or to find that last minute inspiration to top yourself...and the one next doors just as bad!

Check out the new barmaid ! A barmaid in the real "carry on" tradition !! BLOOMING MARVELOUS!
Old fashioned looking pub at the "top of town" plenty of wood and flagstone floors,Good pint of Abbot and Pride available.Get"s noisy at weekends due to the disco(always looks out of place to me!) If it"s get to loud for you escape to the first floor bar where the Rolf Harris looky likey greets you with a "oh bugger you found this bar " look! .Still you will have move back downstairs at 8pm due to the private party"s that never seem to happen! Mind you not the worst pub at the "top of town" so worth a go!
Very Nice GK pub.Nice upstairs area and decent IPA 2 be had. 8/10
Not too bad to be honnest, drank in here a few times and always been nice, but careful where you sit cause if you get too close to the loo's it stinks a bit
sorry, meant speckled hen.. not speckled home! got to stop doing this when i've had a few!
love the speckled home need more real ale pubs!
NOT THE BEST PLACE IN TOWN, FULL OF OLD MEN AND DRUNKS.
staff never wipe the bar down so u get covered in other peoples beer. we ordered some food once during the day, it was rank, we were asked if our food was ok, when we said no the manger came up to us, squared up to my boyfriend and asked us what we were gonna do about it! rather than slap him, or give him a wedgie, we just decided not to drink there again!
Fantastic place every weekend putting the rest of town to shame. Full of twenty and thirty somethings out for a good time unlike the chav-holes nearby.

Nice place, quite large (for Basingstoke) and friendly staff, although there can sometimes be quite a queue for a drink.
Never been when it was really busy but on a weeknight it's not a bad place to frequent.
I frequent this pub more and more now since the refurbishment, though still refer to it as, and prefer the name, Hogs Head. Upstairs is a lot warmer, the beers are still excellent and the food is good. Definitely the best pub in Basingstoke.
top boozer. good midweek crowd, good weekend crowd, good music, good lager, good food. Definately worth a visit.
Didnt seem to be a problem with sitting upstairs. Good beer in here, wasnt tempted by the games machine on offer
Gone downhill recently. Was superb when it changed to The Bakers Arms, but customer service, cleanliness, food and beer quality have dropped enormously. Don't visit this pub.
After refurbishment, the pub is now called the Baker's Arms and is owned by Greene King athough you could never guess that, as the brewery name is not shown on the sign. The story goes that GK wanted to rip out all the handpumps (and hence do away with real ale) but the manager stuck to his guns and they're still there and in use. The range includes some of the GK stable but there are some guests from non-GK breweries. Worth showing some support.
Good food, great beer, real ales and they frequently change them. Friendly bar staff and fairly quick too though i've not been in when its really busy. A decent big screen for sports but it can get quite cold upstairs. They are closing for refurbishment soon so maybe they'll mend the heating?
Very good service from bar staff and quite good beer. If you are normal stay downstairs.

I like the layout of the Hogshead, very nice with it's split - levelness. I prefer this tothe George personally, but reading other comments I think I might be in a minority! Anyway the Hogshead is nice and I would recommend it.
enjoyed a great evening there
