The Oyster has been refurbished and re-opened after a four year closure I've not been in yet but press report can be found here: http://www.eadt.co.uk/news/villagers_raise_a_glass_to_new_owners_and_landlords_as_butley_s_oyster_inn_officially_reopens_1_4938144

Drove past yesterday and noticed the place is offered for sale by Fleurets, who seem to specialise in licensed premises. Suffolk CAMRA website also list it as temporarily closed; so there may be hope that it will re-open as a pub. I'll keep you informed.

Butley Oyster now, sadly, closed as from December 2012 and shows no sign of re-opening as a pub.

Food OK, but the wait of nearly an hour for fish and chips was unacceptable. Only one person cooking on a busy August Friday lunchtime is not good enough.

Brilliant Adams pub. Good Adams beer including Spindrift and friendly locals. Though we didn't have any food it looked good and well priced. I wish it was closer.

A delightful pub full of charm serving good beer to boot. Would definitely recommend.

New landlord - let's see if he can make a go of this pub - he seems fine on initial "showing" - pub needs support.

This is a wonderful village pub . very friendly . The Landlord is a great guy . whenever i visit i always have a great time .

Alexbell - you will be glad to know that the landlord you mentioned doesn't work at the pub now (and hasnt for nearly 2 years). He could be a tad obnoxious when the beers had been flowing - and like you, i didnt particularly take to him.
Now though the landlord is a Suffolk born and bred fella, who will do his utmost to make everyone feel welcome.
Oh - and incidentally, there is a house wine now - and very drinkable it is too.

I was humiliated by the landlord / barman here( in front of my Suffolk in-laws ) I do not wish to return. All I did was ask for a glass of house red - he laid into me telling me this was a pub and there was no 'house wine'. How was I to know? He must have thought I was a bit of yuppy up from London but he wasnt local either he was from Liverpool I think! Is he still there I wonder? The food was fine, this was 2 years ago.

I dont know where the 1st poster ate / drank but it certainly wasnt the Oyster in Butley as i dont recognise his description at all. I have been going to the Oyster for about 2 years now, and although we were 'visitors' to the area we were welcomed with open arms. In fact, we loved it so much we moved very close by, and now drink / eat at the pub a few times a week. We have never had a bad meal there, and Steve, Viv and the regulars make it very enjoyable to spend your evenings there. I dont think ive laughed as much or as often as i have in the last few years. Keep it up guys, you deserve a 10/10 for the quality and service you have given over the years. Cheers :-)

have 2 agree with poster nmbr 2. i have spent many hrs in this pub, and the food was always good. lots of fresh local game from nearby estates. beer always served with a smile, and steve the landlord a really good laugh, always joking. nice location, this place will be even better in the summer. my only criticism is that it isnt next door to my house!

im sorry i must disagree with the comment posted on the 6th of march , i drink in the oyster and on several occaisions have eaten there and i have found no problem with the beer or the food , another point i might add is that they dont serve food on a sunday night which is the only time this person would have seen Steve playing cards with the locals , i would recomend this pub to anyone its a good laugh and the atmosphere is excelent i have always recieved a warm welcome from steve , its so nice to see a suffolk landlord in a suffolk pub - keep up the good work steve

"American Werewolf In London"... That scene where they wander into a pub and the place goes quiet..? Might have been based on this place. This place has about as much atmosphere as Pluto, and is less welcoming. Usual Adnams fare, although there appears to be a problem with the pumps. Takes a long, long, lonely time to get bitter through the pump, and the lager is so gassy it might as well be European. The food is a long time arriving, and, despite the "home cooked" tag I suspect it is pre-packed, pre-frozen and bought at the warehouse. I ordered lasagne and chips; the chips were cold and the lasagne not totally defrosted, let alone "home cooked"... The Landlord spends most of his time smoking and playing cards and the "chef" aint far behind him.
One to avoid.
