Typical of a genuine old fashioned pub, this shows they are still about and going strong. Good beer and Food with friendly people what more can you want.

A wonderful, unpretentious, old fashioned pub. At mid-day it was nicely busy with a great atmosphere created by the drinkers alone -thankfully with no machines or music.
Lots of interesting woodbridge memorabilia and artefacts; If would have been nice has the open fire been lit, but that is only a small point.

The range of ale was excellent with Wherry, Spitfire, Adnams Bitter, London Pride & Youngs Bitter all available to spoil the drinker rotten.

I will definately be making a return visit.

In reply to Biggles, in fact I have tried the Sekforde Tap! Had three pints and (surprise, surprise) one was excellent, the other two were OK but far from prime condition. Having only visited it once will wait until I have made at least one or two more visits before posting comment!

I know where you're coming from, Harbottle, but the Mariner is a beer-drinkers pub and there are never more than 5 ales on tap, which it can easily turn over. They do take some pride in keeping them well.

If you want to see a pub that has far more beers than it can possibly serve in decent condition, you should try the Sekforde Tap further up the road!

First of all let's dismiss this 'grumpy' business! I have visited on several occasions and always found the staff and clientele to be pleasant and friendly. (How many 'grumpy' landlords keep a stock of biscuits behind the bar for visiting pooches?) Another of Woodbridge's wonderful character pubs, what is not immediately evident from the front is the quiet, secluded garden area to the rear.

I would have liked to rate this pub higher, but unfortunately it has fallen prey to the 'more is better' mantra in offering at least five real ales. The result being that the beer, whilst perfectly drinkable, tends not to be in tip-top condition. Pubs in small towns and villages rarely have the turnover required to keep five or more ales in good condition. Overall, though, this pub is well worth a visit.

Excellent sunday roast, Good ales and atmosphere.
I Don't see where people get the impression of "grumpy old men" Landlords. I think it must be you who are snotty!

The landlords of this pub are two of the grumpiest and rudest men i have come across in a long time. They are cold and unwelcoming with little in the way of people skills. It seems that as long as you are over 50 and part of their clique of older men and women, then you are more than welcome however anybody under 30 is made to feel unwelcome and the landlords will show their dislike for you if you are.

The only thing it really has going for it is its good selection of beers and the fact it is tidy. With a change of management to somebody who is less rude, patronising, short tempered and vaguely happy, this has the potential to be a great put. Until then it is far from it.

Convivial local, rugby-based atmosphere, decent Adnams in a good beer range. One of Woodbridge's many above-average pubs; lovely town.

Firstly may I point out that I am not a member of any 'boys club' whatever that may be or of any clique!!!

Description of The Old Mariner just over a year ago: Filthy, filthy glasses, no furniture, no customers, awfull food, closed when landlord got bored, on the brink of closure rotten cask beer.

Description of The Old Mariner today Clean, best cask conditioned ale in town, best beer garden in town , very very busy, stunning sunday lunches, brand new refurbished CLEAN toilets. If enjoying this pub means joining a clique bring out the membership forms

What a horrible way to be treated. These new owners are treating this pub as there own private boys club. If you don't want to join then don't go there.
If you do they will serve you but the service will be rubbish the attitude will be sullen.
Reader,If you think I am wrong then I guess that you are one of the clique.

most friendliest and hottest bar maid in town! yum yum!

decent management? i guess its ok if you like being treated like something found on the bottom of someones shoe! after the awfully rude way in which i have been treated by the landlord i plan never to go in there again!

I had'nt been into this Pub for about twenty years, until last Saturday, not because there was anything wrong with the pub, over most of that time it seemed in general to have a reasonably good name, but it simply was not in my 'orbit', we popped in to, wet our whistles, just before closing time (3:00) and I enjoyed a decent pint of Black Sheep Bitter, one of the three or four ales on handpump.
The only critisism I can make is that it is not by the sea or river which is all this place needs to make it truly exceptional, it has been decorated with what I call 'Nicotine wash', you know, that normally dire attempt to make a pub feel as though it still has the grime of the nineteeth century hanging on its walls, but here 'it works'! on a bright afternoon it gave the distinct impression that Cap'n Blood or Jim Hawkins might get up from one of the settles and order a pint of 'Jamaicy Rum' or some such.
O.K. maybe I'm going a bit far and maybe in Woodbridge it's more likely to be Captain Pugwash or Seaman Staines but you get the picture.
Can't comment on the food but I think this is one you could have fun in, with the right company.

At last under decent management (Chris & Tom, previously of Woodbridge Seckford) and they will ensure it returns to being a traditional alehouse.

First impressions: a good atmosphere; four handpumped ales; food starts soon.
