My first visit since the new landlord took over, although when on that side of town I was a regular, so know it well.
Big improvement: although the last landlord kept good beer, the pub was more than a little frayed around the edges.
Both inside and out (including the garden) have been smartened-up.
I had Black Sheep and Youngs which were in good form (it's "red-nosed" Rae's local, so no worries on that front); the landlord was welcoming (just the right amount of banter).
It's not a "real ale pub" as such, it's a "local" that serves good beer.
I'll be back, preferably on a harsh Winter's day when I'll enjoy something black and strong in the leather sofa by the open fire.

Our local pub as it's the only half decent boozer west of the town centre and within a 10 minute stagger from our house. We used to go there before it changed hands and it has improved. The decor is fresher and Andy has introduced food to the menu which is a good thing. The beer is always pretty good. It's a little pricey but it's better than going to any of the pubs within a 10 minute walk radius. The staff are friendly and it's a pub that definitely fits into the category of "it's better than it looks from the outside". People are always friendly in the pub and they allow dogs. The punters are pretty loyal and there is a Quoits pitch at the back which is well used and maintained. They even have their own team.

Nice traditional pub about a mile from town. Four hand pumps with Springhead Leveller, Tom Woods Shepherds Delight, Youngs Bitter and a pump with a made up pump clip showing 'Festival Ale'. I enquired about the Festival Ale which was showing at about 6%. The bar maid did not know and said she would find out. She spoke to someone else who also could not tell me. As I like to know what I am drinking I opted for the Leveller.
The pub seems to be split into 3 areas. To the left of the bar is a tabled restaurant type area. To the right of the bar there are several leather Chesterfield type sofas. There is also a large screen TV in this area showing a well known satellite news channel. I know from previous visits that they do also show satellite football. Two newspapers were available to read on a table in this area. To the rear of the bar there is a pool table area. It seemed a pretty friendly pub with most customers being regulars. The beer was in good condition and I will certainly be back.

Well what a christmas, we have a very enjoyable christams at the venue, with a local shaun doing the disco Christmas eve. We promptly aquired our New Years Eve tickets that were only 2.00, and may i say what a very pleasant way to spend new years. the pub was policed at all times, one felt secure and relaxed. In addition a full run buffet was a lovely touch, a disco which commenced at 7pm, and a finally of the fire work display, all for 2.00. we have already booked for next year. Well done to Andrew,Heather and family. And a big thankyou

Much better than it used to be- the new owners have smartened it up and the old air of shabby dilapidation has gone. 4 real ales are available, as before, but one of these is now Adnams Broadside which happens to be the finest beer on earth so I will be dropping in more frequently.Food has been reintroduced, but if I could offer a word of advice to the owners it would be a good idea to state exactly when this is available- no one is going to call in on the off chance they've hit 'food service' time. Also, how about welcoming families again?- in years gone by there was a family room, why not bring this back to life?

New landlords have certainly started to turn this pub around. Warm, friendly welcome, great beer. Certainly worth trying

New owners have recently taken over the Emporer Inn and the pub has been improving constantly since. Much of the interior has been redecorated and most importantly customers are treated to a warm, friendly atmosphere.
From the start of November a free-to-enter pub quiz has been held each Thursday with token gifts given to the overall winners.

new licensees are now in took over on the 17th sept. had to close 4 2 days for basic refurb and low on stock till brewery could deliver. the new landlord and lady are givin this venue a real winning chance. they have already redecorated in certain areas, and the place looks alot cleaner, there is even now a lock on the ladies loo. ther are outside heaters for smokers. the real ale selections are rotated weekly, and youngs been the house bitter. I was in on saturday, they have now a food night every night, menu on the wall, quiz night every thurs. gonna keep my eye on this local

Definitely on the slippery slope now. Has recently given up opening at lunchtimes, apart from at the weekend; when a pub starts opening at 4pm you know it's on the way out, especially as at one time this pub had a family room and served food, and even featured once or twice in the Good Beer Guide. Today (a Friday) there was a chalked notice by the front door saying the pub is closed until next Wednesday because they have no beer- a former landlord is blamed for this little oversight. It would be fantastic if someone took this place over and gave it a new lease of life as it's been going downhill for some years now- but somehow I doubt this will happen.

A real, basic local with a good commitment to real ale; the Ansells mild seems a bit tired but the Highgate guest was very good. Worth a visit.

this is the nearest pub to me. been in there both winter and summer. in the winter is is warm and very cosy, with a real wood burning fire, staff a lovely, has a very nice atmosphere, in the summer there is a beer garden in which you can enjoy a few beers with friends. a lovely local pub!

my nearest pub. excellent real ales are served but the pub seems to attract a clientele of weirdoes which are likely to deter normal people from going in. also the pub looks scruffy and neglected, which it clearly isn't. i cant help feeling this pub will follow the live and let live, defiance, gardeners arms etc and be sold down the river by pubmaster/punch taverns in the near future which would be a shame.
