Can't believe this pub is still going.Walked past it enough times and hardly a soul to see. All the locals are drinking elsewhere due to the ridiculous price of there beverages. For a proper pub go up the road to the Stewart arms or if it's food you want at a very reasonable price pop into the pig and whistle.

Popped into this pub a few months back, ordered a pint of carling, 4, wont be coming here anymore

This back street corner pub is geared so far towards diners that calling it a pub would almost stir the Trade Description Officers into action. The main body of the pub is quite spartan with bare floors, plain windows with sash blinds and walls that double up as an art gallery. The tables are laid out down the sides sporting cutlery, wine glasses and plastic flowers that makes it feel awkward knowing whether you should sit at them unless dining. It wouldnt be so bad if there wasnt a separate room to one side that is also predominantly for diners. To cap it all, there wasnt actually anyone visibly interested in dining during my visit and the only other punters were gathered on the Astroturf surround outside the pub leaving the inside pretty deserted and souless. Not much on the beer front with the one Ale on handpump (Bass at a whopping 3.40 a pint) and little else out of the ordinary. Admittedly it was early evening for my visit and with a few punters inside it might not come across so characterless but if you are just after a pint this isnt really the place for it.

well the rough, or riff raff as some people have called them are people born and bred in the area , cant take our pubs as well as our homes !

The rough crowd are still there. Still do good food and the Bass is still on tap but not best kept as it is not a great seller.
Good for lunch

Would love to give this bar full marks..... superb food friendly staff etc. Big shame that it seems to be frequented by lets say a, "riff raff" element. So dont take your elderly aunt along if she objects to the odd f*** or c*** being bandied by the bar. If they got that sorted, no complaints

By number of steps, this is the closest pub to my flat, and I feel as if I'm extremely fortunate that this is so. The staff are extremely friendly, the place has a very cosy, homey feel. The food is extremely good, and the prices are very low for gastropub quality in this area (neighbouring pubs either charge too much or have crap food). It's a great pub for a winter afternoon, as it's rarely crowded and you can lord over the place or sit by the fire. I can't recommend it enough.

Doesn't anyone else on this site visit the Academy!? Well, two years on, it's time for a new review.

I love this place now. Superb food, friendly staff, modern art on the walls and a fantastic wine list. There's only ale on tap, but it's always in perfect condition. Lovely little bar. I just wish I could afford to eat here more often.

This bar now sells Bass. The price is a little higher than average but it's fairly well kept, and the staff are friendly enough.

The Academy is the kind of trendy upmarket bar that only sells highly priced lager and coffee. Looks pleasant enough, if that's what you're looking for. If on the other hand you want a real pub with ales and atmosphere, go to the Prince of Wales, on the corner of Princedale and Queensdale Roads.
