Pretty much unchanged from previous account - probably worse if anything. Chalk Farm used to have a number of reasonable pubs but now they're pretty thin on the ground. They had two ales on this time but with no one else drinking them I bottled out and had a pint of Amstel (@£4.50 a pint).
Standard open plan boozer with central bar area. Ale didn't look inspiring so went for one of the "craft" kegs which was drinkable (though so it should at a fiver a pint)
One beer on, which was good but full of lager types and not a great atmos. However the fry up a couple had on the next table looked superb!
Excellent pre gig boozer,. Good music, ggod choice beers and cider, friendly crowd....Food looked good.
A great pub that plays great music. Service at the bar is important to me and I've never had a problem here, even when busy. The door staff seem ok too, unlike many places in Camden.
As this website is about real beer (ale), I would say walk on past this pub. It does only three beers, Green King IPA which wasn't on when I popped in. They also had Gangly Ghoul which was ok & Old Speckled Hen which again was ok but nothing special. There are plenty of other good or even great pubs close by that know what beer is. Have to agree about the poor/rude service, no need to act this way even in London. Toilets are awful.
Good selection of lagers from around the world so this is a good choice for a drink; service not served with a smile, but this is London; music good but too loud; nice environment- nice bar but as its small and britain has little capacity particularly with pubs, it needs to turn music down a bit- think it was standard middle of the road pap anyway so noone would care
Soz... the service was great. They may have been lesbians, but that may have been my imagination. The only thing wrong with this pub is that the local team seem to play football in argentinas colours. If I want to be reminded of the hand of god and the ugly fizog of Tevez, I can stay at home and watch youtube. Like hundreds of other london pubs, its much better than the one in the town that you live in.
Unless you live in london.

I like to think I have a very good judgement of pubs and bars and I have to say that The Enterprise is probably one of the best I've been to for years. I visited the pub as a pre drink to a gig at the Roundhouse over the road and the whole vibe, the atmosphere, the service, the people, was amazing! They have kept all original features and created the perfect old school pub feel to a T! I for one will be returning and spreading the word, thanks guys x
This is the sh!ttest pub in Chalk Farm. The staff don't understand that the people they serve pay their wages. The lesbian mafia who run this place are a disgrace and if you spend your money in here, I question your sanity. Avoid like the plague!
Really shocked about the comments on this place! me and my wife were there 2 weeks back as we were staying at the hotel across the road. We were seeing a gig during the week upstairs we walked in very homely, GREAT servive even as they were busy we were served quickly and with a smile which is rare. Great selection on whiskeys overall nice place will visit again!

Avoid this pub. Terrible staff! Went there with a group of 12 people. All of us bought food and several alcoholic drinks each. Suddenly the staff decided to turn the music up, loud. I'm used to pubbing in Camden so expect good music playing in pubs but I could feel the vibration in the air here. When asked to turn it down, one barmaid couldn't hear what I was asking, the other didn't speak English and the short woman in-charge was incredibly rude then said no and ignored us. Wish we'd never gone here and will never go back. There're plenty of other places to go in Camden.
Very rude staff and terrible service. I ordered a glass of wine that was definitely off, went to tell the girl behind the bar (who said she thinks it's all disgusting anyway). Her colleague (manger?) tasted it, said it was fine, wouldn't offer me a refund or alternative, and was really rude. Maybe she spends hours painstakingly selecting the wines personally, then pays for them out of her own pocket. Otherwise, what happened to doing the decent thing and giving the customer the benefit of the doubt? Basically, they don't give a shit. They don't want to be there. And they don't want you there either. I won't be spending my money there again.
Smaller place than it looks from the outside. The bar staff were very rude (par for the course in Camden). I ordered a pint of Heineken which was total muck - like it was last of the barrel.
Busy music venue opposite the Roundhouse which means full of cool music types. Just don't order food. Ours took too long to arrive and complaint was met witha rude, aggressive response by a cocky manager who point blank refused us a refund. 15 out of pocket and a very bad feeling.
Good music pub near enough the centre of Camden. Gets full though, the upstairs isn't very big either.
Not a good pub if you're into your Ales; they only had one when I was there. Having said that it was kept pretty well.
Very friendly, efficient staff - get served fairly sharpish even when it's busy.
Generally a decent, if basic, place for a beer. Worth keeping an eye on what bands/DJs are on; whether you want to see it or avoid it.
Great tunes on a Saturday night, nice staff, I think I was on lager/JD last time I was there but am reliably informed they had Broadside too. The least pretentious pub in Camden.
Possibly the best pub in Camden nowadays since the ones around the market are either totally rough or full of tourists and students and the ones nearer Hampstead or Primrose Hill are totally snotty and crap. The evening with the DJ playing motown (used to be sunday might have changed) is always worth a visit. The locals are generally OK but this is London so don't expect conversation with the people on the next table.
great atmosphere and gets packed quick. had some great nights here. proper party feeling
A quick update: I'm now DJing EVERY Friday at The Enterprise (downstairs in the bar), so please come on down! I start at 8.30 pm and finish at 1.00 am. It's free to get in, and I'm currently playing a mix of rock and roll, 60s pop/beat/psych, Motown, Northern Soul, ska, reggae and 70s punk with the occasional foray into disco - next disco nite will be on 24th April 09 as part of this year's Camden Crawl.
There's always a good atmosphere, people are friendly and there's plenty of room to dance! See you all soon. xx
This pub is not for me. dirty dirty dirty!!!
The other reviews below perhaps paint a different picture, or perhaps we were just there on a good night, but I'd say this is now one of my favourite pubs in London (and I've been to a lot). It was a Saturday night, it was nearly midnight, and the place was heaving and playing a floor-filling mix of 80s/90s/00s rock and indie. People were in high spirits and dancing around... life was good! OK, it was REALLY packed, but there wasn't any pushing or shoving. Oh, and at the end of the night, it made a change to be asked nicely to finish our drinks off by a polite and friendly bouncer - top man! The only downside was all the people sitting around the bar, but the bar staff were on the ball and able to serve "over the top". I'll be back... 9/10.
I wasnt that impressed with this place. They serve up Youngs Ordinary and some premium and standard lagers and the staff seem ok, I just thought that it lacked something. Maybe I am being unfair as it was a Sunday evening when I visited, but the other pubs seemed to have a lot more people in them.
I found it to be the sort of place you would meet people at before going on somewhere else rather than spending a whole evening.
I suppose it still retains some of its Camden "szene" cachet, particularly since the re-opening of the Roundhouse, but that's about all one can say. Deterioration on a huge scale - my last visit revealed it to be a shabby shadow of its former self. Best to opt for the less obvious Monkey Chews for a pre-event drink.
Popped in for a quick one before going to the Roundhouse to have my ears raped by My Bloody Valentine.
One ale (bass) which wasn't great. Didn't get near the bar to see what was in the fridge because of the usual annoying barflys hogging all the space.
Pub itself isn't too bad for a pre-gig pint, but frankly you'd be better off taking a five minute detour to Quinns and loading up on some nice Belgian Barley wine, before having a token one in here whilst waiting for the queue opposite to start moving...
I have to say I'm biased about this place as I DJ there (fortnightly on Fridays - next gig is 16th May 08) - I'm the "lovely old gel" someone else has mentioned in a recent review! Yes, it has its moments and can get very crowded but has a good atmosphere and the people are very appreciative of the music I play (60s beat/pop/psych/Northern Soul/Motown/ska/70s punk). Sure beats some of the more pretentious Camden watering holes.
Great pub, my joint-favourite in Camden (the Dublin Castle is the other, in case you're interested) No trouble from locals, in fact one even offered to help out if the bloke chatting up my daughter didn't leave her alone.
what a cracking pub! Me and some friends went here before a gig at the roundhouse and this place was buzzing. The staff are fit and friendly...well the girls are-the beer is cold and good-the dj is lovley old gel who plays all the right stuff-fantastic f**cking pub!
The only problem is that it can get a bit crowded!
Will be back there for a pint and a flirt soon
Don't get me wrong. There are a LOT of good things about this pub. The character of the bar itself, the open fires, the whole energy of the place is dead on. The DJs have their sh1t covered as well, and all told you could while away a very cheery evening in here.
Except for the people that drink here.
I don't know if I was missing something, or if there exists some special code of practice for people who drink in Camden, but the whole atmosphere of this place was wrecked by constant, relentless spilling of pints. My mates like a lively pub as much as the next man, but when the next man empties his pint down your girlfriend's front then tells her she's 'in the f***ing way', then another of your mates is flattened by a group of four brawling men who are being bundled out the door, you start to feel a little less like staying. The real crowning moment on the night we were there was the guy who fell into our table - and I mean actually sprawled out across the table top - knocking pints and glasses of wine into our laps, then again told us barefacedly that he 'didn't give a s**t'. By this point the place had gone beyond a joke.
That'd be one thing if it weren't for the fact that the staff couldn't be less arsed about what's going on. Of the fight, the security guard told us 'what, I'm getting rid of them, aren't I?'. The bar staff asked what we wanted them to do about it then wen't back to talking about the difficulties of back-combing hair and how terrible it was to be constantly mistaken for Noel Fielding. We had to ask the guy that smashed into our table to leave ourselves, which he duly did only because one of the lads we were with looked a bit scary. But you don't want to be the w**kers making a fuss, and you don't want to drink in a place that's going to wind you up so much you have to be.
It's such a shame this place can't make more of all the good things it's got going for it, and it's all because of the spineless people working there that let arsey customers walk all over the joint. I really, really wouldn't recommend anyone visit this pub. I'd leave them to tear the place to pieces themselves if I were you.
I quite liked this pub, you get a good mix of people and there seems to be a high proportion of locals, considering its location. Fortunately, I had no trouble with the locals when I went there.
My only complaint would be the bar staff, they were totally useless! And the toilets were pretty iffy.
i've been here a couple of times, and always thought it was a fun pub. until last weekend when my friend got threatened by a local (for putting her suitcase down in the wrong place). the local stood by our table and shouted abuse (saying her was going to knife us when we left the pub). We felt threatened and asked the bar staff to help (i.e. throw him out). Their initial response was that they couldn't do anything as there "were only 3 girls working that day" - then when I saw a male bar staff come in (from smoking outside) I requested his help. His response was "there is nothing we can do as he is a local". what a joke. we ended up getting help off other tables to move away from the treatening guy, and my friend had to leave very scared out the back door (in case he followed her). what sort of pub sticks up for drunks who are abusive towards a table of girls, just because they are locals. i would never recommend this pub to anyone
On the occasions I've been there my requesting a drink at the bar was a poor second to said member of staff messing with her ipod. She then got the order wrong (after all it was 2 drinks) then moaned at me for changing my mind (which I didn't), later on my order interrupted her texting someone.
People think pubs in Camden are great because they're in Camden, this is not a great pub, it's ok no more than that
Fast becoming my favourite haunt in the "greater Camden" area - only drawback as mentioned elsewhere seems to be the lack of decent ale - the Guinness is usually fine though so that'll do me. Gets very busy on a Friday or Saturday in a "pleasantly lively" rather than a "constantly jostled" sort of a way if you get my drift. I sincerely hope it doesn't suffer the same fate as the once excellent Lock Tavern.
Agree with Nikij(15th Dec) The Emterprise is a dying breed, a REAL pub! Please don't ever change
A decent boozer whether you're there at midday on a Sunday or latedoors Saturday night. Always seems pretty busy with a variety of people drinking in there. The food is decent and doesn't stray into gastrotastic pretentions.
There's often football/rugby on the screen during the weekend but it doesn't overwhelm the place. It can get a bit full of indie kids wearing their pete doherty costumes but then so can everywhere else round there. Overall, very good.

Love this pub, everyone seems nice and friendly. I try to visit whenever Im in the area.

this is what i imagined a camden pub to be like, that nicotine looks original, great mix of people , ok beers and food but nothing special....overall a little gem especially for midweek
My favourite pub in London. The sort of place where you could find an emo kid chatting to an old guy reading The Racing Post. The music is almost always great if you like your guitars (old or new). The atmosphere is great and the bar staff are very easy on the eye. God bless The Enterprise.
NikiJ - 15 Dec 2006 11:00 |
First time I have been here in about ten years, The only thing that has changed is they have taken the Dylan poster off the wall. Smashing pub, please don't change.
Electric proms, wow what a weekend we had, my bloke and me travelled up from Newquay for Kasabian and The Who, neither of us had ever been to this part of London before, but instantly fell in love with Camden and The Enterprise pub, we went in there on Saturday lunchtime and again in the evening before the gig, and then on sunday we did the same. We just enjoyed the rough and readiness of the place and the welcoming staff, especially as they were all dressed for Halloween lol! We met so many people and got chatting to some lovely locals, sorry we never exchanged numbers, but if ur reading this u may remember us!! Especially the two guys with the ripped 20 pound note that I managed to get the barman to accept!!! A great pub in a great town, trust me, we will be back.....
Well run and friendly pub creaming off disgrumpeled punters formally from Good Mixer and Lock Tavern. Quick service at bar. Recommend drinking here if your planning on going to Roundhouse.
Visited this pub for the first time on Saturday, with a few Aussie friends, looked a bit rough at first, but we found it a friendly boozer, nice barmaids, Guiness was good, yes, not a bad pub.Would go again if in the area.
It's a pub Jim, but not as we know it.
Cracking little boozer with the strangest mix of patrons I have ever encountered in a London boozer. Dodgy ratboys fom the local estates, aged Quentin Crisp lookalikes, indie kids, mods, the occasional punk, suits and yummy mummys. All drinking harmoniously together.
It shouldn't work but it does. Recommended.

I like a tatty pub, but this is taking things too far. I feel like wiping the seats before I sit down, and when did the carpeet last have a pile? But good atmosphere, and good comedy nights upstairs.
A really good friendly local. Great for a quiet afternoon drink. Can get a bit more 'Camden trendy' in the evening. Fantastic range of bottled beer. Just a shame that the only ale they serve is a very average Greene King IPA.

Absolutely ace fun. Even the Mockneys that have invaded Camden can't spoil the atmosphere. Many a happy Friday night in here amongst one of the friendliest and most mixed crowds I think it's possible to find in London.
Charmingly worn outleather sofas, friendly sevice and on my visit host to a disproportionate number of very beautiful women on both sides of the bar.
Good music and good booze. Spent too many hours there than is probably healthy. One of my favourite pubs in London, mainly because it's tattiness appealed. Sometimes have a DJ upstairs which, if you're like me and like a bit of indie, can be a laugh, 'specially if you don't want to leave the place at 11.00.
The atmosphere is very warm and comfortable, friendly crowd, friendly bar maids (and very attractive I might add) The food is also wonderful. If you get there before 7 pm you should definetly give it a try!

What an overrated pub, service not very good. V tatty could do better.

Where do they get those wonderful barmaids.....

Cant say much bad about this place. Bar staff need to go on a customer service course though. Good beer..pleasant enough

A great pub. Full of tat on the walls and a sizable range of belgium beers. Which is handy as the tap ale (Green King IPA from memory) is more than a bit whiffy. I like it, I like it a lot.
Not a bad pub, and not the Good Mixer either, which can only be a good thing. Lovely wooden interior, it's got the kind of cosy, knackered, sod-it-let's-have-a-pint atmosphere which has wiped out my bank balance and my immune system. The previous reviewer is absolutely right about the cheery bar maids-the luvverly ladies of The Enterprise bar commonly give me the kind of reception that was reserved for Sydney Cooke in his pomp.

this pub has two personi . during the evening, it's a typical camden trendies hang-out, though a better one . however, during the daytime, it's a proper , proper pub pub, a proper old-school pub in customers, look and feel, if you're a traditionalist pay a visit during the day, you won't be disappointed, and your have a nice and varied range of beers to keep you occupied .
dan - 7 Jun 2004 13:23 |
The pub is okay!
I recently went into THE ENTERPRISE CHALK FARM, bought to glasses of white wine spritzers to find that the wine they offered tasted foul, was yellowy in colour and tasted of vinegar.
Why is it that pubs continue to serve substandard wines at exorbitant prices. I had one glass only and the whole night vomited and felt very unwell.
That was my experience!
Good solid boozer. Perfectly servicable pub grub. Some of the pretty, foreign barmaids now smile. Also, they do comedy upstairs on a Sunday night. Can't knock it.
Paul Marcroft - 22 Mar 2004 13:29 |
The owner is not suggs.
flan - 31 Aug 2003 18:26 |
Pretty civil boozer - good stuff for Camden.
Darryl - 11 Aug 2003 13:51 |
Good pub this. It's actually my local so that's handy. Good selection of beer, nice atmosphere, non-contrived decor that has what theme pubs die for, a bit of history. The only problem is the Olympic grade grumpy sevice. Usually there are about 3 or 4 quite attractive foreign girls serving at the bar and the liklihood of getting any kind of pleasantry out of them is zilch. Seriously have a go, it aint going to happen.
Joe - 17 Jul 2003 15:30 |
Not a bad old fashioned boozer used to have loads of punky looking foreign barmaids but I have`nt seen any lately. Does`nt pretend to be anything else than a standard boozer.
casual - 15 Jul 2003 10:51 |
Someone told me it was owned by Suggs. Is that total bullshit?
Joe - 6 Jul 2003 18:58 |
Fantastic 'Real' boozer, great selection of home & foreign beers, music & comedy upstairs. If you like flashy, shiny bars - avoid.
Mark - 9 Jun 2003 18:09 |
Used to be good. Mix of locals and tourists. Now dreadful, dodgy dealer types and smashed barmaids!
jim - 5 May 2003 10:01 |
You'll like it if you like, in the words of Moe Sizlack, 'Lots of crazy crap on the walls.' Not bad at all.
Joe - 3 Apr 2003 17:23 |
Lovely traditional boozer with real fire and atmosphere
