Lord Raglan, Nangreavesback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
As per the terrible visit - see review 24 Oct 2004 23:09.
Just want you to know that where ever we are, if we see your beer, we boycott it.
Best thing is, since 2004 almost everywhere in Ramsbottom and improved and most offer great service and great beer and actually serve food on clean plates!!
We even have a better brewery now.
Still, looking at reviews it doesn't look like things have changed.
Avoid this pub.

The home-brewed beer is quite tasty, and the food is about average, with one or two items that I've tried rather better than that.
Service is slow. In fact, sometimes you wonder if the pub is actually open or not, or whether theres been a sort of 'Marie Celeste' event in Nangreaves. If the landlord serves you, there is a prize if you get more than three words out of him, and a jackpot if he cracks a smile. During the day the place is usually very quiet. Ideal if you want to read a book or something.
If you haven't tried this beer, it's well worth a visit. Nice views too. Just don't expect to receive much of a welcome!

Nice looking country pub that sells its own Leyden beer. However, beer is very dull and overpriced for what is basically homebrew. Service is pretty ropey amd the food, despite the setting, is average. The nearby Mason's or Dandler are better for food and the excellent Fisherman's isn't far away.

What a lovely pub. Great journey to get there up a cobbled lane by bus. Set in a delightful village with grand views from the garden. Served excellent Leyden beers and we sampled 4 of them.
|
Popped in for a quick pint late on a Sunday afternoon, nice and well kept beer from their own brewery, friendly staff and locals at bar. Olde Worlde decor, would go again.

We visited the Lord Raglan yesterday for the first time in many years.
It was definitely worth the visit. The beers were excellent and a wide range was available - from the on-site Leyden brewery.
The food was more than adequate and the prices were okay... not the cheapest available but certainly not too expensive either, especially given the location.
The pub is traditional but has the added benefit of excellent views across the valley.
My only suggestion is that two bar staff were needed - but the barmaid worked very hard so it's no reflection on her!
Overall, my visit was very positive and I'll be going back again before too long.

Maybe I've been lucky coz I've never had a problem with the place. I will say that the landlord is hard work. I've tried talking to him once or twice & all you get from him is "yes" or "no" or a little smirk then he'll walk off. The food is okay for me. At the end of the day it's pub food, It's adequate,& I dont mind waiting a bit for it. If you want fast food, go to McDonalds. I go there because I like the beer, & to sit down & chat to friends. And it has to be said that they're beer is very good. I would say the best I've had locally anywhere.

Can't believe this place is scoring above 2 out of 10.The owners will gleefully tell of numerous occasions customers were dealt an unfair blow. They must be writing their own reviews! Take a walk from here. It is as nice as the Yorkshire Dales and only 30 minutes from Manchester! But,go in the pub after that walk. No one. No service, no food.
I have been in the evening and had to wait and wait for a drink. Eventually, when my turn arrived, I was treated with near contempt by a ginger haired git who wouldn't know the concept of customer, provider relationships if the cnocept got up and kicked his butt. Perhaps a task the owner ought to consider? Hanging on because of the location, but badly run and delivering a service impossible to go below. This is the pits!

After a bone rattling journey up the cobbled road to get there the beer and food made it worth the visit. A great selection of ales from the Leyden Brewery with something for everyone. The food was superb as well and only the queue at the bar stopped the pub getting a 10!

The journey to the pub is an adventure in itself, over a mile of old cobbles, before arriving on the hill top and quite spectacular views over the valley. We arrived early on a quiet Sunday lunchtime, so speed of service wasn't a problem, although there was the merest hint of the sullen-ness that has prompted so many adverse comments here. It seemed like the staff didn't want to engage with you and couldn't wait to serve you and move on. Spectacular range of ales from the brewery downstairs, at very reasonable rates. We chose not to eat, but there seemed to be a steady flow of people arriving for their Sunday lunch and we didn't see/hear any problems in the hour we were there. Beers available to take out either in bottles or 4-pint carry-outs, a good enough reason to visit in itself.

Went in this pub and was rather quiet, waited for someone to appear behind the bar for what seemed like 10 mins, wasnt far short on checking the time. No apology from the person who appeared, presume its the landlord, appeared surly and not a very friendly type, good beer but had nothing to eat as i remember a burger i had there a couple of years ago. Could and should be a good pub but at this moment in time is not.

I have been going in this pub to meet up with friends for over twenty years. Over that period, I have made the mistake of eating there only twice. On both occasions we arrived at 8.00pm for an 8.30pm booking and were shown to the table at 10.30pm! They were not busy, but they had no staff and no concern.
The locals around the bar can be seen enjoying the weekly floorshow as diners protest over poor service, but I have never seen them foolish enough to be waiting for a table.
It's a good pub for a drink, but if they have more than a few people in, be prepared for a long wait at the bar,and don't expect a businesslike response if you are unhappy with any aspect of the service. This is a pub where the locals go despite the service, just to meet up.
It is a great pity, because the location and the pub itself are fantastic, and if it was well run it could be one of the best pubs in the North. However, Gordon Ramsey would have a field day if he took on this nightmare.

SIMPLY POOR SERVICE ASKED FOR PLAIN CAULIFLOWER NEVER CAME WHAT MORE CAN BE SAID BY EMPLOYING INCOMPATENT TEENAGERS WHO DO NOT SEEM TO CARE ABOUT CUSTEMERS

Simply poor food. By all means have a drink there, but please don't eat the food. Dirty knives and forks, unhelpful staff, low paid teenagers serving. Shame - it could be great, but it's a let down.

WHAT U MOANERS its a great pub up in the hills of nangreeaves eh good beer great bar staff friendly people who go in to eat bookings are full at weekends stuff you misry guts Proud to go in too when out walking up the hill beaty area to see

A real shame. Poorly cooked food appalingly served, stroppy, sulky kids working in the restaurant, the whole place coulddo with a bloody good clean as well, in my opinion. Dirt does not equal atmosphere. Oh, great beers, though! (wonder if they do them in bottles).Nice spot, as well, but a serious need to re-evaluate the words 'hospitality' and 'good food'.

Look, I avoid long reviews, but this may really help you to avoid wasting time and letting people down. Please read on because it was so bad I had to write this.
About two weeks ago, we felt like Sunday lunch and we'd seen the sign at the end of the M66. We thought, sounds good, found it, great views, had pub lunch, great, good pub - we thought.
So, today was my Mum's 60th birthday. She didn't know where she'd like to go, so we recommended the Lord Raglan. We'd thought we had found the perfect pub - read on. Today is the 24th October 2004. We were a big party (5 + 3 year old) so I phoned and booked for 5:30pm.
We arrived at about 5:45 but it took ten minutes stood around like spare parts until I asked the kitchen porter to get someone who could tell us where to sit.
A grey haired man (I assume the landlord/manager/Terry?) appeared and confirmed the booking and told us to order drinks and please wait until our table was ready. Great, we enjoyed the fantastic beer.
After a good gap, the lardlord asked if we were ready to order. And we did, fine.
Soon, a waitress told us our food was ready and we moved from the bar to the restaurant. Now, before I explain the forthcoming events, you should know that there is seating for about 60+ diners. There were 12 diners including ourselves. Sometimes, places are too busy, so you plan to come back another time when it's quiet.
The food was instantly served; on greasy/dirty plates. We complained and the waitress and land lord whisked them away, all plates, to the kitchen so sort out. A few minutes later, the food returned, colder than before and, I suspect on different plates, but still the were covered in grease. It's a birthday so we carried on and shrugged it off.
The food seemed good, but one of us had ordered a Thai curry with naan+chuckney. Despite asking for it, it took ten minutes and my asking the Lard Lord at the bar for a small, and crap (no other word for it) Nan bread / chuckney to appear.
We ordered two drinks - simple - large dry white wines. Again, I had the leave the table and ask the Land Lord for the drinks.
The meal itself was ok, nothing better than that. But, if you like mixed grills, I would be careful. I'm vegetarian so, it was so-so, but you have to be so careful with meat and this meal was served cold/luke warm. Dodgy? Also, there was a white without a collar cat wandering around the table. I dont think this is legal?
We now wanted to order desert - yes, we were still wanting to spend money here. No waitress, she'd seen us and gone down stairs, ignored us. Again, for the third time so far, I had to approach the bar and ask the Land Lord why "I have to work so hard to get a decent meal?".
He came over, took the plates and gave desert menus. As he took the plates, he dropped a gravy covered knife down the front of my wifes top. She handed it to him and he soon returned to take the desert order.
I asked why he had not apologised for dropping the cutlery on my wife. "Any deserts?" was the reply.
We called a stop, asked for the bill and cut our losses. My father, who was paying the bill, was too embarrassed to ask for a reduction and so the Lard Lord got his money and doesn't care one bit.
QUICK CONCLUSION To sum up. The Land Lord WILL NOT APPOLOGISE even if there are numerous faults on his part, let alone his stall. The food is, so-so. Beer ok. I could walk from Ramsbottom (where I live) to this pub and have a great drink (or three), but I won't. It's the worst meal I've had in four years. So poor and so over rated, it's trading on its good name for self brewed ale. If thats how they deal with customers, God knows what they put in the ale. Go to Owed Betts or the Strawberry Duck and if you go the Ramsbottom, there is Bellinis Italian, Ramsons (more posh and Chris the owner is a star), the China Cottage and many more. Even a chip barm at the Major pub would have beaten this and their beer/atmosphere is great!

The service is excellent and the food is very good. makes a nice change to chains such as brewers fayre. The range of brewed ales is quickly increasing and they seem to get better and better
