6/10? Are you serious beer fans of south birmingham?
Not sure what you want from a pub.
Interesting Interior. History. Great Beer. Superb entertainment - from decent bands, to comedy, to sport, to a Pub Quiz.
First visit yesterday and I wish it was my local. already a favourite.

This music venue has a good selection of beers usually Purity . It gets an high score for hosting a free blues club on a Saturday afternoon

Still some bits of architecture to give you some idea of what this pub must have originally looked like (tiling; plaster ceiling and some woodwork) but there is a lot of "new victoriana" such as the vinyl window decorations and the newer ceiling papers etc. Large bar area with a music venue upstairs (there was a band practising when I visited so I could imagine the noise level could get a bit much for an old git like me!! Three beers on and I must admit my Cross Bay Dusk was very pleasant. they also had 2 beers from Purity Brewery. Worth a visit as part of the No.50 bus crawl.

"pretentious" even! Sorry, mis-spelt it and chose the wrong word from the spell checker! terrible!

They SERIOUSLY don't know how to run their beer lines! I've had several different beers - mostly lagers on several different nights and each time I've tasted line cleaner residue in the pint! The first time this happened was late on a Saturday evening and both me and my girlfriend noticed it (pint and a half of stella) so I went to tell the bar staff and the response of the girl behind the bar was a complete joke - she basically decanted my pint into a new glass and tried to give it back to me telling me the beer is fine it was just the glass... even if this was the case - the beer in the glass is already contaminated! Eventually after challenging this response I got told "well it's last orders anyway, you can't come up complaining at this time"
Unbelievable - this place is so stuck up it's own arse - it's not a pub, it's a venue! They don't care about their customers as they're going to be busy regardless - customer isn't right here!
Whether there lines aren't being cleaned properly or their dishwasher can't rinse - either way or both, I know when a pint tastes of chemicals - by taste and by the fact my stomach aches within five minutes!
Somebody should go in there with Litmus paper and dip it in every pint and see what they say when presented with proof! Mind you, if you're unlucky and get some attitude ridden member of staff at the end of her shift, you've had it!
Shit "Venue" due to it's awful preconscious attitude and inability to run a bar properly!

Was here last Sunday for a gig by The Rezillos upstairs. What a smashing pub, holding onto its traditional values and full of eclectic clientele from different cultures and fashion persuasion. Beer was bang on too. Bravo 9/10

Music pub that has kept much of its traditional tiled decor and serves equally well as an everyday pub. On visit there was Purity Mad Goose and Purity Pure Ubu. As previously stated however there is a wide mix of people in here from diehard music fans to locals.

Best pub in Kings Heath without a doubt, though it doesn't have much competition.
|
Agree with everything llucas1 has to say- when I lived in KH in 2008 this was the only pub I would even contemplate going to. Would love to have seen real ale in there though, although the Staropramen always went down well.
|
Great news! The Hare and Hounds now serves a decent drink in the form of Purity Mad Goose. It seams to be selling well and has always tasted good so far. Pubs don't get much better than this!

This is by far and away the best pub in Kings Heath and a contender for the best pub in Birmingham. In fact it has already won the 'Best Bar' award from the Knight Times.
I say it is the best in Kings Heath even though it doesn't serve any really good beer. The San Miguel and Staropraamen are both very good, however they're still just largers. There are no good ails. The Gunnues is fine.
This pub is good because of two main factors. Firstly the diverse mixture of people - from uber-cool Moseley types to beardy weirdy's and boarder line tramps/nutters. Secondly the stunningly beutiful, grade 2 listed architecture. Few other pubs are so well presserved inside and out.
This pub has become the centre of the local community - just as a good pub should. There are lots of good bands/performers playing and comedians too. Frank Skinner did some stand-up here about a year ago. I recomend this pub. Lets hope others in Kings Heath learn from its example.

I have to disagree with the other reviewers here. I went in the pub on Sunday 20/12/09, and thought the atmosphere and the beer was good. More than 'mediocre'. I have friends who occasionally DJ here, and the standard of music acts/bands here is now also very good.
My Abbot Ale was in good nick, and I now know what it is like to be excommunicated by the Abbot!
|
Have some good bands on in the upstairs room, but that's about the only thing to recommend it. Mediocre pub otherwise, clientle trying a bit too hard to be cool, beer nothing to write home about.

What a truly awful pub this is. It should be in Moseley where it would fit in nicely as it's full of pretentious tossers. The ale in here is undrinkable, the Guinness wasn't much better. The barstaff don'#t seem able to keep track of who was at the bar first or just serve there mates before everyone else as twice we were at the bar for ages and served long after people who got to the bar after us, maybe we weren't wearing the proper uniform. Another thing that gets my goat about this pub is that the gigs (the only reason to go here, the gig room is good and some great bands play here) start really late. It's alright having a stage time of 10.30 on a weekend in the city centre where people can get home from but 10.30 on a wednesday night, in Kings Heath, with no public transport makes for a very expensive late trip home. Not everyone is a student or in a band living of mummy and daddys handouts you know, some people have jobs and have to be up before 6 in the morning meaning that getting home gone 1 isn't really an option.
This place makes my skin crawl, i just hope to God there are no more good bands playing here in the ner future, i'd rather travel to London to see a band than go here again.

Agree totally with below comments, best pub in kings heath and for quite a bit around.
|
Putting Kings Heath on the map! not as prententious as a Moseley joint and now that its had a wash and polish its probably the best looking pub for miles. Presumably the freaks and retards who frequented the hairy mound before its refurb have eloped to the goose up the road, leaving a fairly cool crowd without being too cool. Good sound system and venue upstairs, and a novel scran system of local takeaways delivering to the pub. I've not seen many people eating in there but as an eatery this would be so much more preferable to the goose

Has recently been refurbished and the handpumps now have real ale coming out of them. Was very busy when I went (on a Sunday) but still got served straight away. The new owners seem to be making a decent go of it, and there's a variety of live entertainment as well.
|
Went to the pub to see some bands, got there early so planning on having a few drinks downstairs. They had hand pumps but no real ale and my girlfriend was wary of the locals so we went to the goose down the road to kill time before the gig opened.
Still it's a nice looking traditional birmingham pub with public bar, lounge and snug (i think didn't want to venture round there!)
