Quite a diversion in my Guide to the best of the Royal Mile. I found myself in a previously unexplored part of Edinburgh.
A couple of handpulls on with an excellent Deuchars IPA. Took me a while to twig it was a gay bar - with some rather striking art work.
Good beer and worthy of its entry in the 2018 Guide.

Yes this is a gay-friendly bar. But I didn't feel uncomfortable in here and there is a reasonable ale selection - Houston Peter's Well & Slainte & Caledonian Deuchars IPA. They also had Old Rosie cider. Staff were friendly. The interior has some interesting features. Worthy of an entry in the current Good Beer Guide.

Tried this bar as we had heard ofthe legendary real ale. Loved the comfy bar, atmosphere was great (yes it is primarily a gay hang out - get over it! we are a hetro couple with no prejudices just a love of ale). The beer was very well kept. The bar staff were a bit snippy and too hurried with the pints so the ale wasn't poured in an optimal manner. I forgive that as the quality shone through.

I absolutely love this pub. Good beer and Guinness and also a mean cup of herbal tea! Really friendly atmosphere, really relaxed and very clean with good service and fairly priced.
WiFi is a bonus and it's lovely to see a pub that will allow dogs to wander around too.
Will visit this bar everytime I'm in Edinburgh... Must remember to try the food next time.

Benzyl's 'Bears' are bulky homosexuals, fyi.
Strewth! I've just had this image of a few fat bears rolling in there after and afternoon's cottaging!

Bears? WTF? Beer was good, WiFi worked. it had more of a private club atmosphere than a pub one though. Not my cup of tea.

Good clean cosy venue with free wi-fi tasty food and a friendly and helpful bar staff to serve a good beer/wine/spirit mix. Likely to have some bears from Calton Hill in - not that you'd notice unless you looked.
