Becoming a 'Mosque and community centre'. Landlady moved to Loaded Dog on the high road.

Closing permanently apparently, to be redeveloped. So I guess that the rare intact 30s interior will all be ripped out
|
No beer on tap for weeks every time I look through the window. And now it's got a To Let sign on the outside. How long can it be before this pub gets turned into flats or something?
|
Now reopened under new management. Went in tonight to give it a try.
The Colegrave could be such a good pub: the interior is on the CAMRA regional inventory as being of special historical interest as a rare complete 1930s (I think interior). It's really very nice inside.
Barman was very friendly and welcoming despite it being a quiet Monday night.
But, alas: only one real beer on tap: a rather uninspiring Greene King IPA. And it was off. It's such a shame that a pub that can serve 10 different foreign derived lagers, all identical: but not one single English beer.
I wish them well: much like the previous occupants there are lots of good ideas in the window for quiz nights, discos etc etc. It didn't do the previous occupants any good: they went bust too. I just wish that my local could serve me some beer. There isn't a single pub near me with decent beer, and I really think you're missing a trick with a pub on a CAMRA list...

Closed again (14/10/08) - reopening soon under new management

Basically when Len had this pub he ran a tight ship (for donkeys years), but after his decided to move and new people went in, then it went downhill. Shame used to be good in there and the quiz night was always fun with Billy Stevens.

Not been in yet, but it now seems very busy. The new tenants are clearly making an effort... new attractive lighting and seating outside, and even curry made on the premises in "Bittu's kitchen". I'll give it a try soon.

It's reopened!
|
There's a sign up saying that a new licencee is taking over soon.
|
It's shut and up for rent. A shame because the tenants had obviously just spent some money on it. I guess it's just too big to turn a profit in this area. The Rookwood up the road is a similar size but is famous for its Jazz nights, and the ever-welcoming guv'nor Gerry. I don't ever recall anyone recommending the Colegrave to me, even though my one and only visit was OK. So, will some entrepeneur turn it into a real ale and good food place (something I think that could do well in this area... at a risk of sounding a snob, the demographic is moving upward all the time) , or will it end up as an olympics cash-in property development? Watch this space.

I don't know what to make of this place. It's enormous but only ever seems to have about 8 people in it at any one time. My one and only visit was pretty good, the staff and regulars were friendly and we had a pretty pleasant night. The interior was very shabby, but it seems to have been done up since then. The outside has certainly had a lick of paint.
