Gam will be posting about the Greyhound next!
wealdman - 12 May 2014 21:10
Why post about pubs that have been shut for yonks?
dolphox - 12 May 2014 13:31
Ooh; sorry. But if it's so completely irrelevant, why were you looking at it?! Just saying it needs to be labelled as CLOSED on here but don't know the process for doing that - if you're that keen for people never to post about pubs posthumously, perhaps you could do the necessary?!
Gamboozler - 12 May 2014 12:00
Pub is closed for about 16 months now, as mentioned on here. Why post about it?
croydonpeer - 11 May 2014 08:05
Hear hear Geoff! I haven't passed by the ex-Nutley for a while now but I almost daren't do it, in case what I find has happened to the charming exterior is nothing short of vandalism. I was told the frontage had a listing of sorts, so fingers-crossed.

The pub should be indicated as closed by site moderators but I don't know how one goes about getting that done.
Gamboozler - 9 May 2014 13:14
It's a depressing state of affairs when the profit from converting just the small ground floor pub space into a 3rd flat is enough to persuade a cynical developer & an uncaring local planing dept to join together to kill a popular historical pub. I've fond memories of its cosy cramped spaces.

This local community hub got destroyed without even the lever of a pub car park that a property speculator could try & redefine as pre-developed land & therefore allowable for development.

Lets hope the shell is allowed to keep some of its character. Our planners seem to have a touch less contempt when dealing with Reigate's heritage than Redhill's next door. Converting Redhill's ancient Flying Scud (that was older than Redhill) into what could be a post-war polyfillered austerity prefab was a planning disgrace. Redhill's good looking historical Greyhound was similarly converted into a blank shell, stripped of its architecture & is now a souless tragedy of economy commuter flatlets that could have been knocked-up a botch builder at any date.
geofff - 24 Oct 2013 15:34
Closed, permanently; the property will be converted soon into 3 flats.

Sad, after nearly 200 years.

It was a good old style pub; but, then, there are few of these left, these days.

croydonpeer - 25 Jan 2013 22:57
Friday 25th Jan 2013 - End of an era for a very long-established true local pub, and one of the few I've ever seen where people of all ages and backgrounds mixed without feeling they were out of place. Often wished I lived a bit closer as met some great people over the last couple of years.
zombieman - 22 Jan 2013 19:18
Looks like the writing's on the wall folks: the pub went up for auction on 21 November as John the licensee is duie to retire next May. I don't know who purchased it, but apparently, the chances of it remaining as a pub are next to anorexically-slim. Another bland and entirely avoidable pub-to-flats conversion ahead, had the right people come along at the right time with the right money and determination to rejuvenate what was arguably the last local in Reigate centre.
TWG - 19 Dec 2012 17:58
Enjoyable little pub. Drinks are well looked after. Toilets were clean last Friday. Nice place to escape to.
filf - 7 May 2012 22:06
Good riddance Alan-------mish Mia though. Alan can be found in The Bulls Head!
slmcg47 - 3 Feb 2012 14:39
Alan gone? GREAT news - what a bore, inside and outside the counter. Dog (Mia) was nice though; we will return again soon, even if the pub don't have SKY.
randolf7 - 28 Jan 2012 00:13
Fine boozer and landlord. Good that Alan has been barred with his dog!
tempest - 27 Jan 2012 22:32
A spit and sawdust pub without the sawdust. Tired looking and delapidated and well worth a miss.
papavar - 12 Oct 2011 07:46
I wondered if you'd spot that one ! It was Badger , apogolies for erorr !

inowhatilike - 12 Oct 2011 00:00
The Nutley doesn't sell London Pride--don't know what you were drinking!
slmcg47 - 7 Oct 2011 16:19
A spit n' sawdust pub with some 'interesting' regulars . The counter was sticky and the London Pride opaque and dull . The toilets took my breath away . I have known the pub for many years and I agree that Reigate needs a pub away from the crevats and RH2 snobs, but a few buckets of disinfectant and a line clean would not ruin its character , I visited July & August 2011
inowhatilike - 25 Sep 2011 23:19
very sorry to hear about steve,a great guy....
laughingduck - 9 Sep 2011 11:40
Just to reiterate.....rumours of underage drinking/cocaine evidence are just hearsay--no evidence whatsoever--thats why the landlord, John, at huge financial risk to himself is appealing the LA/police to impose totally restrictive conditions on the pub licence----

kaytoo47 - 26 Aug 2011 19:41
Steve Dawes, for those who know/remember him is very ill indeed, and is not the man with the dog. Alan has Mia the gorgeous Alsatian dog. Alan might be rough and ready but he is loyal and honest, in his own way. Stuart is sometime lodger at the NH......keep fighting guys-----appeal date early October, so post to save this quirky litle hostelry!
kaytoo47 - 26 Aug 2011 19:25
perhaps the dog is called steve.
laughingduck - 4 Aug 2011 05:40
There's also a bloke called Stuart, a nut regular. I heard he lives there with a dog,
tradervic - 3 Aug 2011 21:50
No....I think randolf7 was talking about a guy called Alan - who has a dog, more articulate than him. Dunno Dawes.....
wealdman - 27 Jul 2011 21:02
hi,i used to work with steve as well and he lived just up the road from this pub but i dont believe the poster randolf is on about would be steve, but agree with kevin {who i also know}steve was a very nice bloke and still is no doubt.
laughingduck - 27 Jul 2011 11:40
i used to work with a steve dawes back in scottish and newcastle days he was my area manager in the ill fated emma hamilton (now demolished) and i remember that he lived in this neck of the woods....a very very nice guy...kev..no rating given
kevincarter - 27 Jul 2011 11:23
his name is steve dawes.....
guv2 - 27 Jul 2011 09:03
good and friendly landlord. but a reg there with a dog, seems to take over. he don't work or wash and provides gossip from other local pubs. i think he lives upstairs with his dog (canine). badger is well kept and i once played against the pub's cricket team. good blokes.
randolf7 - 26 Jul 2011 21:38
Was in here on 11 June. Hall & Woodhouse K & B Sussex, Badger and Firkin Fox. Basic boozer, friendly landlord.
GuideDogSaint - 23 Jul 2011 21:58
Take it from me John is not going anywhere. He has not lost his job--he is still the landlord. The pub is NOT going to close. There is no evidence whatsover that underage drinkers have ever been served alcohol--notice that that the local rag writes 'teen drinkers' ie 8teen+!! And yes--minute traces of cocaine as in every pub in borough. We are fighting to keep this pub--help us please--sign pour petition and letters in pub.
kaytoo47 - 17 May 2011 12:27
Forget everything about oft-repeated local rumours that have floated around other local pubs, and so-called "news" sources.

As of time of writing, and to best of my knowledge and belief, the pub is OPEN, and landlord John is STILL THERE with the same "no ID no alcohol" policy as before.

It was one of the focal points of the Nutley Lane Street Party and used by the organisers to plan the event, which over the vast majority of the day, despite both the pub and that section of the lane being chock full of people passed without incident. Apparently there was an incident in the early evening which I missed during a 10-15 minute visit elsewhere, totally over and done with by my return.

The party was a great success, I met up with an ex-colleague I'd not seen for years, newer friends I'd made at the pub, and met and chatted with people not seen before.

It would be a tragedy to lose such great little local pub. Long may it continue.
zombieman - 10 May 2011 20:32
I, too, saw John/landlord in the Nutley as usual (yesterday). The last poster, but one, refers to 'the large amount of cocaine found in the toilet' - what rubbish?

NO cocaine was found. Only the small evidential traces that can be found in a very high percentage of UK pubs were apparent and the matter was dropped.
tradervic - 4 May 2011 13:28
John - the landlord - gone? Well, he was there over the weekend putting on great food/entertainment etc for the wedding and all. 100's of people at the pub.
tempest - 2 May 2011 22:38
So much for the battle to keep this pub open because it was a good community local. The landlord has left due to serving under 18s and for the large amount of cocaine found in the toilets.

I don't expect the pub to last.
anotherpintplease - 1 May 2011 13:32
Soon to be under new management!
randolf7 - 28 Apr 2011 23:14
The news here is indeed good - for the duration at any rate. This is not thanks to our weak-willed council who approved the development plans, and our spineless MP who was too busy to lend any real active support to the campaign which he claimed to have been passionate about. Rather, it was simply down to the licensee. John advised me a few weeks back that he had just signed a new 3-year lease on the pub with Hall & Woodhouse, who it seems were concerned that if John left the Nutley, trade was so indifferent that it would fail to attract any new takers and so would ultimately prove unviable as a pub. So not a cynical cash-in as such then?! In any case, happily John was perfectly willing and able to offer his solemn commitment to keep the place ticking over, and that was enough for them to withdraw. So, hopefully we have seen off any unwanted attempts to close it and develop it into housing - at least until 2013!

In the meantime, if it matters to you, make the most of it, and ensure you give the place as much support as you can. If trade demonstrably picks up by the time John does come to leave, it is less likely H & W will give up on it and will at least look for a suitable replacement so it can continue as more-or-less Reigate's only proper community pub.

And I should say for cask fans, the Badger remains on superb form!
TWG - 8 Nov 2010 17:58
Despite this pub having planning permission for convertion into three flats, it seems that it is to remain open and to be refurbished. This is good news indeed for Reigatians and for John - the genial governor - who works all hours.
tradervic - 5 Oct 2010 15:52
Decent friendly pub, popular with all ages (don't think it's far off being able to use the phrase from 18 to 80 lol) and despite seeming very popular with the young clubbing brigade on a Friday and Saturday doesn't need bouncers at the door to prevent trouble, something that inspires a sense of confidence in your own personal safety.

Very well kept "Sussex" and "Badger" on the pumps very nearly all the time, often another more seasonal or otherwise temporary brew or two (Fursty Ferret at time of writing I believe). Lager (HB), cider (Stowford Press) and Guinness also on tap as well as various bottled drinks of all description.

It is nice to go into a pub in Reigate and know the bitters are well kept and "safe" rather than several other pubs where it's "Lager Lager Lager!"

It would be a tragedy if this historic long standing pub (which amongst other things has its own cricket club) were to be replaced by flats as per the now sadly approved planning application. There is some silver lining in the range of conditions, particularly regarding the cave access (not sure the brewery or architects thought of that originally), and I also understand the brewery have agreed to renew the lease if the landlord wants to in January, so the fight to keep the pub is not lost yet.

zombieman - 16 Aug 2010 18:44
Sadly, the brewery/freeholder was granted planning permission last week for the conversion of this pub into three flats - despite significant local objection.

The only conditions relate to vehicular access - with a three year term for the development and the preservation of the cave underneath the pub.

A fine local boozer and well managed. Is this the end?

On Nutley Lane also, The Admiral recently closed....
wolfdog - 10 Aug 2010 10:40
Hear hear, TWG. I hardly ever come here now (it's a bit out of my way, and it's not real King & Barnes any more) but it's still a good local boozer with an excellent, welcoming landlord. Sign that petition, if it's not too late.

C'mon Pilgrim Brewery, buy the pub and sell your beers there! (Or don't they travel that far...)
lynx - 5 Aug 2010 01:43
Yet another pub needlessly under fire from a cynical and lazy regional brewer who'd rather behave more like a property portfolio company, and just sell-off pubs on the fringes of its large estate that it deems aren't worth the bother and cash in on the considerable land value, rather than try to devise a strategy that might help such pubs survive for the benefit of its local customer base. Stand up Fuller's, Greene King and of course, Young's who all have been/will still be guilty of this one-size fits all approach and simply letting pubs go to the wall and selling them for conversion/demolition when they don't quite conform to the standard blueprint of food first, ale second - a template that works for affluent middle-class pubgoers in Greater London but not necessarily in more provincial locales.
Actually in this instance, the brewer in question - Hall & Woodhouse - are not London -based (Blandford Forum), and one might have hoped they'd be more sensitive to the individual needs of its various pubs, but clearly that would have been naivety gone mad, as they are now acting as ruthlessly as any real estate company (sorry, pubco) would do!

There is still much to commend the Nutley; not least it being the only true "local" pub remaining within the centre of Reigate. There is often only 2 ales on, but both are kept well by John, the down-to-earth, engaging and clearly popular licensee, who along with a significant number of local regulars/visitors is preparing to fight H & W's plans to the end. Yes, many Reigatian residents probably prefer more upmarket venues, and yes, the South-East needs more housing. But these broad truisms alone should not be sufficient to necessarily seal the doom of yet another community pub, whose trade is respectable in the current climate and which is the antidote to all others in the town which have sold out to the posher end of the spectrum.
The Nutley is not a perfect pub. But it is worthy of a campaign to ensure it can continue to trade for those who prefer it to the likes of the Market Hotel, Blue Anchor or the Cage. Support it while you can - forget all that crap about it being full of certain "minority" types a few years back - and make the most of it, in case the owner gets their way, which despite some tough talk I heard from John and some punters last Friday, still remains a very likely outcome. Note there is a petition available and if you feel inclined to sign then ask at the bar.

TWG - 10 Jun 2010 12:59
Sadly, the brewery has recently applied to convert this pub into three flats. Hopefully, the planning permission will be declined; this is an old and historic Surrey venue which is well managed and an integral part of local life.
sussexfox - 18 May 2010 10:42
very friendly landlord and regulars. regulars are still knocking about but you won't tend to find many of them on friday or saturdays any more which is a bit of a shame. fantastic place to drop into for a quick drink though - especially if you're a fan of ales (keep an eye out for seasonal drinks.. pickled partridge!).

fairest priced drinks i've stumbled across in reigate so far. also nice little quirks like moisturiser, and popurri in the ladies!
keendrinker - 21 Jan 2010 02:34
Late afternoon, but apart from the two people having a smoke in the shed outside, I was the only customer. However, the Pickled Partridge was OK (and served in the right glass). You can see that this could be a good, old-fashioned pub, but I hope that trade picks up a bit...
rpadam - 19 Feb 2009 19:01
A proper local, good ale.
jeffdaff - 20 Feb 2008 11:30
Having recently moved to Reigate from Redhill I find we use the Nutley more than any other Reigate pub. They let well behaved dogs in (we have a greyhound) and the beer is consistently good. A true local and I hope it stays that way for many years to come.
addlened - 4 Jan 2008 09:25
By way of an update of my comments of 10 Oct '06, my last visit found this pub still serving good ale, still lively, and in good nick. Yet I spotted none of the usual faces that have frequented the place for many years (odd considering it was a Saturday night), and moreover, those that had replaced them were blatantly representative of, shall we say, a certain minority! I have no issue with gay pubs, but the Nutley is emphatically not such an establishment, and I doubt that the licensee would see it as such. Whilst all should be welcome, such flagrant display of camp does, rightly or wrongly, put more moderate locals off and I fear this might be the case here if this crowd persist in using it.
This is one of the last honest locals left in Reigate, and I don't want to see it become a pub for a minority group only at the expense of a broader clientele. Maybe I'm way off beat here, but the signs of a narrowing customer base - whatever their sexuality and appearance, can never be good in my book.

TWG - 30 May 2007 10:36
I heard this pub is full of Raliegh Bikes these days, is that a bad thing?
scooterroy - 16 Jan 2007 20:05
A nice, traditional friendly local - nothing fancy, plain wood-panelled walls, good Badger beers, very pleasant.
Trequites - 30 Oct 2006 13:58
I used to drink here regularly in the early '00s but sadly seem to get in here far less nowadays. But that is in no way a reflection on the pub's quality. Possibly Reigate centre's only true remaining local, the Nutley offers an unpretentious (unusual for Reigate!) and honest atmosphere with convivial staff and punters. Accented towards the over-35s but I don't mind that, and all the younger people who I know go there seem to love it as well. Well-kept good range of Hall & Woodhouse beer, and a thriving cricket team to boot. Worth seeking out for a night away from Reigate's pseudo-glamour, or at least as part of a crawl.
Treasure places like this whilst they still exist in the area - they are a dwindling breed thanks to the dull, unimaginative and by-numbers stranglehold of certain pubcos.
TWG - 10 Oct 2006 16:15
We went in there the other Saturday to watch the footie and it was really good. Beer and locals friendly. They even shared their bargain buckets with us!
scooterroy - 1 Apr 2006 10:17
Top pub for a quiet pint. Quite small but you know that when you choose to go there. Mmmm Stowford Press cider. Very nice. Only pub I have been in with it's own cave system below it. (The market has some behind it but that's not the same)
crispsandbeer - 1 Jan 2006 22:51
I think "Benjamin" drinks at the White Hart...

I've only been here a couple of times, but found them very friendly, nice drinks and fairly priced.

Its slightly out of my way otherwise I'd drink here all the time.

If only the other landlords would take note...
RobW - 3 Aug 2005 12:59
A great local, off-the-beaten-track pub which is the only place in Reigate to sell Stowford Press cider so it gets my vote! Function room out the back for special parties. Pleasant on-street seating. Very clean toilets! (and no I'm not connected with the land lord, just a random drinker!)
goosegog - 22 Aug 2004 20:23
Are you sure you're talking about the right pub Benjamin? The regulars do all know each other but they're very friendly.
smuj83 - 21 Jun 2004 10:42
Definitely the worst pub in Reigate. Great if you know the locals, if not stand against he wall and wait to be shot. Obviously the previous comments have been made by the landlord and friends!P.S.Pipes are dirty, beer is crap!
benjamin - 18 Jun 2004 23:16
A great pub with friendly bar stuff and table football, enough said
edward - 18 Jun 2004 13:50
Really suprised on my first visit. Was standing-room only but it didn't matter. really friendly, lovely little pub.
Tom - 4 Apr 2004 21:33
Yes, it is limited space-wise but it is prpbably the most genuine local left in Reigate. Down-to-earth friendly clientele, and beer quality is now sound although has varied in the past. Food looks worthwhile but haven't tried it. Nicely tucked away.
Tom - 29 Mar 2004 16:04
Went there last night. Very friendly bar staff. The beer was very good.
Nick - 16 Aug 2003 12:02
i started using this pub when i was 18. i am now 50. i also live in california so i cannot get to use the place as much as i would like. derby day was always a good time with this pub is one of many on the walking route.
will - 25 Jul 2003 19:12
Good little pub
Sid Jenkins - 30 Nov 2002 16:59

Chris - [email protected] - 31 May 2002 12:27
