I used to live on the Barking road many moons ago and wanted to see the pub again. Not much has changed, a big pub with old Victorian features which is worth the visit in itself. One of the staff was pleasant whilst the other seemed peed off to be there. It was a Monday night and only 4 people in there. The beer was OK and service OK. However I went in for 3 or 4 pints buck got Chu med out at 10pm as there were so few people. So not great if you are planning a mini session at the end of a hard day. Worth a visit for the style and grandeur of days gone by.

Was in here on Friday just gone for the first time. It's a stunning place and well worth a visit. Was quiet for a Friday, which is a shame, as I'd hate to see this place close down, especially when it takes the hit on match-day takings next season when West Ham move to Stratford.
Had a great time, locals were friendly. Check out the ceiling on the billiards room at the back- there is nothing else like it in London.

Architecturally gorgeous pub, with cut glass and wood features, it would be very fashionable were it in a trendy corner of north or west London. Sadly it's very faded and presumably relies on match days to keep going. Has one real ale (although it had finished on my most recent visit). Plenty of staff on match days, so queues not too bad.

The Boleyn ( the "Tavern" part of the name seems to have been dropped ) is an imposing street corner local in the shadow of West Ham's football ground.
It's a well preserved multi-roomed Victorian pub which features in CAMRA's book of London Heritage Pubs where it is described as "one of the more spectacular late Victorian pubs in London".
A central island bar serves a number of different interconnecting rooms. A longish narrow room with an entrance on Green Street appears to be the preserve of locals and contains a dartboard and some West Ham pictures behind the bar. At this entrance, we see old etched door glass being the names "private bar" and "saloon and billiards".
The billiards room is the architectural highlight of the pub with a splendid large stained glass skylight and an unusual decorated moulded frieze. The main adjoining saloon bar also has a fine stained glass skylight and some wooden partitions. There's also an original bar counter and some fine cast iron columns.
On my recent Sunday early afternoon visit, with the exception of half a dozen or so customers in the public bar, the pub was virtually deserted. I'm afraid that I formed the view that management is making little real effort - for instance a prominently positioned sandwich board on the pavement outside was advertising the "World Cup Final, Holland v Spain 11 July" even though this game had taken place a fortnight earlier. Similarly, a notice in the billiards room invited me to "join us for the World Cup".
There's no real ale, so I went for the draught Guinness - 3 - served by a barmaid who, whilst being reasonably welcoming, seemed genuinely surprised to see someone she didn't recognise.
This pub won't appeal to everybody, but if you're in to ornate Victorian pub interiors, you should seek it out.
Finally, when you're here, don't forget to cross the road to admire the splendid statue of Bobby Moore with his team mates holding aloft the 1966 World Cup.

Great pub on gameday. Ok, it takes a few minutes to get a drink, but thats normal cause the pub is filled to the roof with Hammers! I've already been there not on a game day and the service is much quicker then. For ever blowing bubbles!!!! Belgian Irons rulezzzzzzzz. Much L&R.

This is another late Victorian gem that has retained almost all of its original features. All the usual attractive features are present, including carved dark wood and etched and cut glass. Im not going to describe it in detail either visit yourself or look at CMRAs The inside Story. Its a very large pub, subdivided up into several big rooms, including a lounge at the back that features a pool table and a dartboard. Indeed when I was in at lunchtime during the week, a couple of the bars had not been opened, as they were clearly not needed to satisfy demand. Im sure it would be different on a match day.
They have not introduced any of those faddish high tables and stools that you see all over the place only normal tables and chairs for this pub. Unfortunately they havent introduced any real ale either. I suppose that theres little call for it in this part of the world. As a pub I really like it as its incredibly attractive from a historical point of view, but the absence of a decent ale is pretty much a fatal flaw in my book.

proper east end boozer. great on match days. away fans beware. good pint but it takes a while to get there.
|
hard work to get served when the hammers are playing, and plastic glasses are horrible.

This is a PROPER pub, across the road is the REAL Theatre of Dreams, Lively and welcoming I'm from the north and an Iron to my bootstraps, love the Team and feel the same way about the people, never met with anything but courtesy here on the rare occasions i can get to a match. Staff are wonderful and if it takes a while to get served get over it think about where you are and breathe it in. I'm forever blowing..... oh well you get the idea. See other comments regarding safety on a match day...whatever!!!

Shame about the beer does not do any, and the slow service a good 5 minute wait for some one to appear, but punters seemed ok and decor good.

Just what you'd expect in the area. Avoid on game days unless you're studying Neanderthals - plenty of study material on offer then.
|
Another great westham filled pub true that it may take some time to get a pint but the atmosphere is unreal non-stop signing and again strongly advise away fans to avoid on matchdays unless you are looking for agg where in that case you will be taking part in the famous green street run back to upton park station.

Good local pub, close to the Boleyn Ground so very much a Hammers pub. No real ale on the day of the visit but apparently they used to have some, so they may do again.
|
Great pub, always drink in here before the game on matchdays, Hammers pub through and through. Always good for a sing song before the game and take the p*ss out of Spurs and Chelsea fans !! Cos we hate them. Come on you Irons.
|
TRADITION.....It's a WEST HAM pub,salt of the earth.Will never be a plastic pub.Good service,good beer.'nuff said.
|
Real old style East London pub run by a local family. Has pool tables, sky tv & very affordable drinks. As someone else mentioned, unless you support West Ham this should be given a very wide berth on match days - not only is it packed to the rafters (quite literally, with people standing on the pool tables chanting), but it can be an extremely rowdy/intimidating atmosphere.

Avoid on a match day unless your a hammer fan!!!!

Nice local pub,bit large but has a nice snug, very rare these days.
