I made my way here from north London because of the history and tradition of the pub. Indeed the buns are there hanging off the ceiling but the pub itself has little else to draw the outsider across town. Of particular irritation was the strip light running under the shelf behind the bar at eye-level. With the mirror behind it this creates a terrible migraine educing glare. This might sound fussy but the lighting in this pub is very drab and does the place no favours. Sadly there are NO ALES available so I had to settle for Stella. The locals and staff were somewhat aloof. On the plus side I liked the Navy theme and many pictures and souviners brought in by sailors. I get the impression this pub has it's ups and downs and I hope with forthcoming change of management they can address some of the shortcomings and make this a pub worthy of its legendary status.

Get home and a new book that i ordered has been delivered.... This place is on the cover of "britains strangest pubs". What are the chances?

Walk along phase 14 of the capital ring was cruelly stalled because the greenway was shut. So I continued down the Lee Navigation and found myself coming past here to get to the DLR.
Winner of the uniquely named pub of the year. A quick stella to refresh myself and off. An experience.

This place changes hands every couple of years. The place will never be the same at is was in the 70s and 80s when the landlord and his wife would do anything for you. In the 60s there were a couple of black and white spotted dogs living there who we would walk on our break from school. It was a great pub back then especially with the hanging of the bun ceromony. Now, its just a place for a beer with if you pass by and many a night you will see it empty. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets closed altogether as it must be running at a loss.

All the pubs have potential,it's the clientelle thats the problem,There isn'tenough to go round in the east end now. Reason- See The "George" stepney posting.

So much potential... but nothing you'd want to drink unless lager head. If they would just have one or two real ales, it would be my local.

Nice little neighborhood boozer--I showed up there not looking for much besides my pint of Guinness, and had a really fine time with a friendly staff and some of the locals. This is an actual local, warts and all. I'd go there again if I ever found myself in the neighborhood.
