After hearing that it had been closed down I went to have a look - bin bags covering the windows; doors locked and no signs of life? That spells "closed" to me.

Slightly rundown, very "local" pub approached through one of those underpasses you wouldn't like to walk through alone. Sticky tables, bad wine, not particularly warm welcome.
|
Naff location right next to the IDR, loudish music but the ale was fine and very cheap.
On balance, nothing particularly special but nice to see a pub with cheap ale.

In the old days before the big influx of town centre Wetherspoon's and Yate's this was the best pub in Reading. Its a little bit out of the way but this is a real pub. I will keep popping back here to support the place hoping for a revival of the good ole days.

sadly a very dire pub we went there for there last beer festival twice the first time was ok but when we went there the 2nd time but this was a total diseaster four of us had one particular ale it was off so we took all four glasses back to the bar and told the 2 cowboys behind the bar that this particular beer was off.So with no response from them(they didnt even change it) we left the pub and will never be going back there

well i go in the hook and tackle and i think its one of the best local pubs could could ever go into. cheap and the staff are very welcoming and smile which in my eyes is hard to find its a real great pub well done to the management. .. and the karoke once every 2 weeks on a friday is proberly the best in reading

Had a clean and a change in management - pub is now trying to promote ale a bit more. At 1.50 a pint it certainly is attractive but the quality often reflects the price, sadly.
There's also a hint of unfriendliness about the place which puts me off. I wouldn't feel particularly comfortable in there on my own.
Pool tables and seemingly continuous poker games complete the picture.
Good for a cheap pint if you're skint and drunk your way through all the Wetherspoons in town, but nothing more at present.

Out of the way pub, approached through an underpass. Part of the Barracuda chain and was doing a Beer Festival on our visit. It all seemed friendly enough on the day, I'm not sure that having a Festival just doing the most commonly obtained beers in England is the right way to go though. I couldn't find 1 beer in the whole list of 40. Having said this its good to see the pub trying.

For some reason I fell over the wall whilst appraoching these premises, which are located near a busy dual carrigeway.
Pretty standard pub, big supporter of the local football team.

Reminded me of a Harvester (maybe due to its location?). Sold a decent pint of Bombadier and Directors on Saturday, with a Hobgob shield turned round. Otherwise unremarkable for me.
|
Staff are not very friendly.

For Reading this is a very good pub. cosy and welcoming with outdoor seating in summer.

Nice old pub, a well hidden sanctuary away from the chain pubs in the town centre. Beer is good too.

Good selection of well kept real ales.

The only pub I know that's given the tradtional pub quiz a new angle by combining it with bingo to create ... Pub Quiz Bingo! What an invention - worth a visit on Sunday night for that alone.

Surrounded by fumes and concrete, but it's actually a decent pub once you get inside. I suspect the regulars may be a suffering from year of lead poisoning. The pub quiz was ridiculously easy the last time I was in and my team won by miles, yet we're average (at best) elsewhere!

Only been there twice but love it.
Great atmosphere, good choice of beers, friendly dogs and cats that come to steal your snacks or nap on your lap.
Bit worried that they can close the whole place for private parties at short notice - I thought it was a "Public" House!

In a town dominated by chain pubs this is one of the few "proper pubs" remaining. Just South West of the busy Oracle shopping centre, and the other side of the flyover, this pub has an excellent selection of real ales. Nice atmosphere, and some tables on the grass outside (I wouldn't call it a garden!)
Highly recommended!
