Now no longer called India arms. Turned into Italian restaurant but still has bar.

Half a trendy bar and half Italian American, rather than strictly Italian, restaurant. I went there to eat recently and even my girlfriend gave it a thumbs up. The food seems pretty good. As a bar, I'm probably too middle aged to comment.

Pub and restauarant fully up and running now. This pub is now called The Italian Bar & Bistro and the first reports I have heard on the food are promising with several of my customers trying the food in there and loving it. The Carbanara (sp) is especially good apparently. Give it a go.

Oh no, went to the neighbouring pub last week and found this pub is no longer an Indian! It is being re-furbished as an Italian. It appeared to still have beer on the bar (Pedigree) but we didn't go in to try as it was still bit of a work site.
|
Always clean and very friendly staff but hard balance between the restuarant and the bar area.
Curry I had tasted nice but wasnt quite hot enough ( oven heat ) and found the atmosphere to be a little quiet... again depending on if you are wanting quiet restaurant or atmospheric pub.
It is a recommendation though :)

One of my favourite pubs - great to do a crawl from the hole in the wall, stop here for an indian then finish the night the King Street Tavern just over Elm Grove. It can be a bit quiet in the week at times, but don't let that put you off. Currently they are carrying Doom Bar & Summer Lightening on the ales, kept fine. Lagers include Heineken, Stella & Amstel. There is a dart board with darts provided, with a standard seating area in the front, and sofas towards the back.
The food is superb - they are now doing mix & match smaller dishes or you can have a standard sized curry if you ask for one - they are also doing an All-you-can-eat for 12.95, unlimited starters & main meals. I have noticed no difference in portion size. They also do takeaway with 10% off.
|
always very quiet now, usually walk past and go into the hole in the wall, decided to pop in last week, what a mistake only one beer on, sharps doombar but not in very good condition, i've also heard that the portion size for the food has been reduced
|
totally agree with other comments . this is now the best curry in Town. friendly and efficient staff too. comfy sofas and good beers too, what more can you want

I can second the comment that this is now the best Indian Restaurant in Portsmouth. Definatley the best ive ever tasted and I love my currys.

Anybody who remembers or reads reviews in here regarding this pub before its refurbishment in 2007 - please ignore all preconceived notions. The "small Indian bite" a la tapas bar concept has now gone, and the place serves quite simply the BEST Indian food that we have tasted, not just in Southsea/Pompey, but anywhere (and I include Leicester where we hail from). This, plus friendly staff, relaxing surroundings and good real ale (Doom Bar recently) make it an essential life-enhancing activity. And when you think that the marvellous Hole In The Wall is just next door... shortest pubcrawl on record.

The pub has reopened and serves good ales - complimentary to the Hole in The Wall next door.
The place is well laid out and has some great areas to chill out in.
The Tiffin is definitely worth a go and Monday nights sees Indian snacks on the bar.
Worth a visit.
|
The India is reopening this coming weekend as a Tiffin Bar, small Indian bites apparently. Looks promising from the outside, decor improved dramatically. Well worth a visit just to see the improvement in the place.

Thank goodness this dive has gone!

A student pub with small beer garden, once had an atmosphere, now nothing special. I'd suggest going round the corner to the wheelbarrow.

What happened to this place. Used to live in here about five years ago, couldn't get enough of the place. Ok so it was always a bit of dive but great crowd both sides of the bar and beer was always good. Went back recently and there was no-one in the place, beer was also undrinkable. Wash the pipes, please!!
A waste of a good pub. Will try again later in the year, please come back!

Two pool tables, cheap drink and a big screen for the big games - not really my scene, but when it's reasonably quiet it's great for a few games of pool before a Sunday roast round at Mum's house. :o) It's a functional pub, does what it says on the tin. Mostly a student crowd, always a lively atmosphere.
|
This used to, and I am talking 20 odd years ago now, be one of the best pubs in the country!
|
one of the managers here is a T-total. now what does THAT say about the place :-(
|
its not a bad pub. the staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is great. the pool is quite cheap and the drinks available are at a good price.

This is generally a good little pub and is a good place to watch live sports with the new LCD projector. Bar staff are really friendly but is definately more for students and a few locals than your usual crowd for a local. (Might have something to do with the student halls at the end of the road!). Needs a bit more work but is getting there.

For everyone who has complained about the India Arms, you are surely missing one thing out - the fabulous Hole In The Wall pub next door to it!! Went there last Saturday and nearly missed my train back to London drinking in the pub. Give it a try chaps!
|
Could do with being done up , but a friendly pub none the less.

This used to be the best pub in portsmouth with a fantastic cross section of the community using it. On a Tuesday night it could be 3 or 4 deep at the bar. But within the last 5 years it has gone incredibly down hill, it struggles to be 1/4 full on a Saturday night. 5 years ago = 10/10. Now = 0/10 Its a real shame when this happens to a pub.

the toilets are broken and smell unpleasant and the decor is only half finished, the pub no longer has an identity, and the "daffy ducks on the windows are horrendus!"
