the owner makes this bar different, her welcoming look her friendly chatter make this water hole very special . they serve a range of good home cooked food from curry and chips to fresh baked sea bass (it might have been caught by her husband). on a Sunday you really see this place come to life with locals and ex pats from miles around coming to, once again, have their traditional chicken piri piri fix! the fact you need to book says it all, this bar is in a small village and every Sunday the retiro do marujo is full! what brings so many people? the ambiance? the staff? the smell of the almond wood burning as you drive up the village? the delicious, moist, crisp skinned chicken marinated in the family's century long secret recipe? well this voice says it's all of the above! your trip to the Algarve would not be the same with out a visit to the retiro do marujo. they pull a great pint too!

Really where it all happens in Almadena, I enjoyed countless nights with the staff and regulars in the Retiro: absolutely ASTOUNDING hake cooked to local taste by the excellent chef, AND they catered for my dad's drunken curried chips lust. You'll want to come back. To live.

ange&chico: Sorry I didn't get to visit this year, heard you had good craic with the rest of my clan... would love to see you all again though. xx All the best, dan

Definitely THE place to go for chicken bbq evenings with "to die" for piri piri. Nice relaxed atmosphere in a traditional bar with mixture of local Portuguese, expats and visitors. Very welcoming and friendly. Once you've been there, you will keep going back!
