please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Beautiful part of the country, the journey is more edifying than the arrival. No handpumps, usual selection of fizz on tap, Cairngorm Tradewinds and various An Teallach offerings in bottles. Friendly barman explained that they have tried cask ales but were unable to shift enough to keep in good condition. Fair enough but why keep these beers alongside the lagers & ciders in a glass fronted fridge? Far too cold for such product. 3.85 per 500ml bottle.

What a find! In out-of-the-way Altandhu on the Achiltibuie peninsula there is this great little pub. The interior is dark and atmospheric, with lots of curiosities on the walls. The owner is friendly and chatty. She is a member of the family that have been running this pub for ages. She is now - February 2011 - providing a campsite down to the sea across the road from the pub. And the beer is good! There's nothing this good for 45 minutes in any direction.

Gavmel, I'm sorry to read that the Fuaran bar didn't live up to your preconceived idea of what a Wester Ross bar should be like. Maybe the owners should employ you as a stylist so you can mould it into the Brigadoon-style fantasy you doubtless crave. I like the place. It's not the best bar in the world but I've always found the food good, the beer fine, the staff very friendly, once you get talking to them - what you don't get is the faux-bubbly, gushing corporate b.s. you get in other places. Maybe this is because it's a REAL pub, run by REAL people who possibly have days when (like most of us) they're bored stiff and hate their job. As for your assertion that the entire area is "spoilt" by the bar, you are clearly utterly deluded - if they plonked a McDonalds and a Starbucks in the Hydroponicum it wouldn't totally ruin the Coigach peninsula would it? And re the presence of a pool table and satellite TV in a bar..sheesh, whatever next..dominos? (pun intended)

This is the only proper PUB as opposed to the public bar of a hotel within a twenty mile radius. The interior is dark and atmospheric, as pubs in the wilds of Scotland should be. There is a newish outdoor drinking area which commands great views. Right, that's the positive part of the review.
Behind the bar is a charmless young man who can't even muster a smile as we enter the pub. My 'hello' is met with a stony silence. No words are exchanged as I order and pay for our drinks. He stands, virtually motionless, for the duration of our visit, eyes fixed to the TV screen opposite the bar. Maybe he's been lobotomised.
I have a pint of Red Cuillin, the only ale available. Although completely clear, it tastes bloody awful.
I have no doubt that I will come here again, but this was a disappointing visit.

Well, gavmel, with an attitude like that no wonder they were surly towards you. As it's such a remote pub, have you thought that they might be catering to the locals with the pool and Sky sports? I suggest you stick to wine (or should that be whine) bars or whatever it is that takes your fancy as you obviously wouldn't know a good pub if it bit your arse.

Cannot believe we are talking about the same place-have visited this pub high and low season and have never been disappointed with the welcome.the service or the food.Sorry the last reviewer thought so badly of one of our favourite watering holes.NEVER found the landlady or her staff surly yet!!

Super - can't think of anything better than Sky Sports in a Wester Ross pub. Pool table too! Mmm mm, makes me want to dash over there right now and down a few pints of Europee. Oh, it's in a beautiful location. What a shame the area has been spoilt by this god awful aberration purporting to be a hospitable pub. Ghastly is my opinion. Try it "off season" when the surly local staff don't give a toss. I have and wont be back EVER! I rather stab my eyes out in a bog full of midges.
