Typical traditional Scottish boozer that should be separated by a car park and a road from the river. But the river seemed a bit too close for comfort, having already crossed the road, on our Saturday evening visit. It is a lively pub with a bar area and a slightly quieter lounge with a nice fire. Although, both are one large room in reality. Live English women's football was showing in the bar. Theakston XB is the regular ale. Guests were Greene King IPA & Well's Bombardier. I opted for the XB, which was the first decent ale I'd had by this point.

I was the only customer on a quiet wet day in Dumfries but the landlord certainly made me feel welcome. It had the feel of what I think of as a "border" pub with three of the four handpumps showing real ales. I chose the Corby Ale which the boss told me was from the Carlisle area; it was an excellent pint. The interesting gantry featured a good selection of single malts; it is an italian marble counter on italian hardwood evidently!

Agree with most of the comments posted here, malts is exceeding fine some of the clientele are distinctly anglophobic. Also it can become a little raucous at weekends particularly during the football season. Having said that it's saving grace is that it serves good beer from cheery barmaids. The gantry of malts is quite outstanding. It has a seated covered smoking area out back. Overall somewhere I drink in fairly frequently and enjoy.

We found this to be a very welcoming place (and we're English). We ordered our drinks and looked around for somewhere to sit, but it was a bit full in the bar area. The landlord instantly said "Give me a minute and I'll get the fire going in the other room" which he promptly did. Several guest ales a couple of which are from micro's, loads of malts, even had a decent wine for the other half. Called in again the following day for more of the same.

Not a bad pub with decent beer. Not the most welcoming place unless you are known to the clientel and the bar staff.

If you are English beware of the racist jibes(Personal Experience) Beer has been good at times and malts are great an with over 200 it is worth a go. Must be a lot of people from Trinadad and Tobago go in there as they were flying the national flag when I was in.

Reasonably friendly public house with a modest range of real ales on the go. At the time of my visit (Friday night) things were a bit quiet and the guest ale was london pride - not great if you've just got off th the train from london. A small gripe perhaps aginst a pretty solid pub. My overall rating would be 6.5.

If you've time to kill waiting for a bus on the Whitesands this, rather than others nearby, is the place to do it. Always three guest ales, and a brilliant coal fire in the side lounge on winter days. No food (though they'll make you a coffee if not too busy), but if you ask nicely they'll let you bring in a roll from the little shop a few doors along.
