Visited multiple times. Despite the name (The Grill has no food, except pies at lunchtime) and the unassuming exterior, this is a little gem of a pub, with 4 well kept cask ales that change frequently, and a few kegs and bottles. The really impressive selection here is their malt whiskies, though. Efficient service.

Quality establishment selling fine range of ales and extensive selection of whisky.

I wonder if the name of this place was designed to put people off as it's nothing like the American sports bar one would expect. Wood panelled and cosy, it's overwhelmingly male and apparently the women's toilets are a recent innovation. The beer selection was extensive and as Plymouth Pirate mentions, the Bitter n Twisted was excellent.
|
Atmospheric town centre pub that I'd have probably avoided due to the unprepossessing frontage if it wasn't for the reviews on this site. I'm glad that I did my homework though as this is a great high street pub, serving excellent ale (my Bitter n Twisted was pitch perfect). Legend has it that in the past there was no women's toilet and the male of the species still dominate the numbers here, which is perhaps something to bear in mind if you've got a less enthusiastic beer drinking other half in tow.

When I googled mapped this pub it looked closed and when I came here on a Saturday night the exterior on Union St gave exactly the same impression.
However once you go through the door it's very much open and is a good honest bar. The bar runs the length on the right as you enter there are 4 pumps with all o them offering scottish ales.
I had a good pint of stout nicely poured and the service was swift.
The whole bar has a feel of a snug about it and its another friendly Aberdeen pub.
Huge whiskey collection some of the more precious ones in locked and labelled cabinets.
Cracking place that really has to be visited

A classic auld man's pub with a fair preponderance of them on my visits. Can be accessed from main entrance on Union Street or the back door on Justice Mill Lane. Plenty of ales on all on good form.

Another Scottish pub that not only has a gorgeous heritage interior but still survives as an unpretentious boozer. Fabulous place. The long wooden bar serves several cask ales and an extensive array of whiskeys.

Get past the rather plain frontage and you find yourself in a long, narrow pub with an ornate mahogany bar back and moulded ceiling. Note the brass strip running the length of the bar - this was once used to strike matches. Curiously, there are no stools in the pub, only the fixed leather seating, meaning people are obliged to sit beside each other. There are four handpumps - beers being dispensed on our visit including Harviestoun Bitter'n'Twisted, Burnside Wild Rhino and Fyne Ales IPA Project Davaar. Our first beer, Wild Rhino, was good, but the follow-up, the Davaar, was superb. On a return visit, the Davaar was sadly gone, but we had another Fyne Ale, Hurricane Jack, which was quite good. We also availed ourselves of the extensive range of single malts (300+) - the ones we tried were, again, superb. This is a great pub.

Everything about the outside of this pub seems designed to stop you going in. Don't be put off. Superb whisky and whiskey pub with every malt you are likely to ask for. I didn't even get to the beer. An essential visit on the Aberdeen itinerary, along with the Brew Dog pub.
|
From outside I was extremely dubious about entering as you cannot see inside due to the wood panelled frontage, but once you step inside you will NOT be disappointed.3 ales available were SN Spitfire,Caledonian 80/ and the Deeside brew which I quaffed and it was divine!! GREAT PLACE 8/10

A fine watering hole indeed. Excellent selection of beer and whisky. Has a very local feel to it, but in a welcoming sort of way. Not at all intimidating as you might expect from looking at the exterior. One of the better pubs in Aberdeen, and best in the city centre by miles.

The best of 14 pubs we visited in Aberdeen. Whilst it looks like a dive from the outside, inside it is full of character. In addition to a marvellous selection of whiskies, there were 4 real ales and it was refreshing to see 2 or 3 in Aberdeen that were not from the Greene King stable. During our visit, they had Belhaven 80/, Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted, Shepherd Neame Spitfire and Isle of Skye Black Cuillin. The other customers were very friendly. Agree with the previous poster about the poor gents toilets.

If your a serious drinker (and I am by reputation) and enjoy your boose (and I do) there are only 2 placed to go and one of them is The Grill. This is the ideal place to go if you like a dram or two of good malt and their selection is great! This is also a place to meet the locals, who are friendly, but you seldom see the nutters that cause trouble. I should know as I'l a regular and have never seen troubleI would Have given it a 10 but the bogs can get a bit nippit and minging. However, the staff are great and really care. The beer is also always good and its a perfect place to go if you enjoy a "Hauf and Hauf " with emphysis on whiskey. Dont be put off by the outside though

On my visit at NY2008, the only thing that let it down was Boss doing a disappearing act, otherwise 1510 for service and selection.
|
I nearly didn't go in, don't let the outside put you off. What a lovely unspoilt boozer, immaculate inside, great pint of Caledonian 80/-, the biggest selection of whisky i've ever seen (one McClelland at 200 a nip) and some of the most welcoming people to stand and drink with. Don't miss it !!!
|
The ultimate whisky pub - must have every single malt in those fantastic wooden cabinets behind the bar. Much bigger than it looks from the outside, its easy to walk past and miss it. Apparently they only recently installed a female toilet.
|
Fantastic unspoilt old pub, though feels completely out of place next to modernity of the West End. Having said that, real ale uninspiring - stick to keg or the fantastic whisky range.
|
I think many may be put off by the gruff exterior but don't be fooled, it's a gem inside. Nothing cuts out that biting Union Street wind quite like it. Lovely gilded roof adds plenty of character. Incredible selection of malts and a couple of real ales - great to see the local 'Brewdog Physics' on tap which is a lovely drop. Always pleasantly busy
|
A good clean working man's boozer. The real ale was in good condition and they have a good selection of malts. A great place to escape her indoors when she's shopping.
|
Don't be fooled by the lack of windows, this place has a very nice interior. Check out the ceiling. Huge selection of malts. Good service, nice atmosphere. Pretty much faultless. Ideal place for pit-stop if your crawl stretches from Belmont to Top End of Union street.

Two words for this bar: old school! Bar staff do their job, unlike a lot of bars i could mention they do not act like they're doing you a favour by getting you a pint.
|
Great bar, the bar staff are brilliant and take no nonsense!! They know all aboot there drink !!! + it's right in the heart of Aberdeen Town Centre.
|
As per Harlequin, drinkers bar. Beers are good, good selection of malts, and the barmen know them and can help this poor sasenack to enjoy them. Freindly, if a bit daunting. Pub snack food is good. There is a really good Fish and Chip shop through the back door.
|
This is a no nonsense drinkers bar, in the old style of things, no windows even though it fronts onto union street...until very recently no womens toilets , in fact the only women allowed worked behind the bar. A good selection of malts , with the usual Tennents lager and other jock beers!
