passed this pub a few times and as it was hot day and I needed lunch stopped - the ham sandwich was good, with ham being off-the-bone. No local ale unfortunately but the Ringwood 49er was acceptable...garden nice and set back from the road. Interior looks interesting (must try in winter). Out back is Sudbury Hal Nursery if you need a few plants.

Found this pub whilst visiting sudbury hall. 3 real ales on sale of which i tried the local brew from church broughton - vicars ruin - which was on form. Had a great lunch by the real fire with my girlfriend and will visit again. I had the local bangers with real mustard mash and my other half had freshly made fish and chips both of which i recommend.

The Vernon Arms in Sudbury is a great pub in all senses of the word. Good selection of beer/lager and homecooked food. Roaring fireplaces in the winter and a huge garden for the summer. The pub is an old coaching house and is therefore full of character and history. I have been for a meal here on many occasions (as a couple and with a large group of friends) and have had many memorable evenings that are thanks to the helpful and friendly team at the pub. The Vernon is not part of a chain and is all the better for it!

Excellent food, cooked to order. Very friendly staff. Lovely old building.
Why not visit Sudbury Hall at the same time.
Will definitely visit again.

My wife and I called at the Vernon Arms for lunch on Saturday 26/1/08 and were *VERY* disappointed.
It began promisingly enough; a welcoming open coal fire in the entrance hall and a choice of three real ales (Pedigree and Whim�s Hartington IPA and Arbour Light) in the upstairs bar which were served by a very pleasant and helpful lady.
But when you notice that this lady�s shirt and trousers were long overdue for a visit to the laundry, you have to begin to wonder about the standards, particularly the hygiene standards of the establishment �
As the small upstairs bar was full, we returned downstairs to find that both the rooms were uncomfortably cold. We eventually moved back to the upstairs bar when some earlier customers left, just in time to witness another customer settling his tab, but refusing to pay for the food as it had been inedible �
Our lunch was already ordered, so the alarm bells began ringing �..
My wife�s fish and chips were OK, but the two thick slices of �ham� served with my ham and eggs, not only looked very peculiar and unappetising, they were rubbery and difficult to cut, and very chewy and tasteless. As my wife was becoming convinced that ham was raw, the waitress noticing us examining the plate came to ask if all was OK. When I pointed out the problem, she whisked the plate away without any hesitation and offered me an alternative. I am sure that she was anticipating that there would be a problem. I selected a gammon steak, and when this arrived about 25 minutes later (when my wife had long finished her meal) parts of the gammon were definitely under cooked and I ended up leaving most of it.
Before we departed, my wife went to the ladies and said that they were disgusting as they had not been properly cleaned, there was a lack of toilet paper and neither of the cubicle doors would close properly.
I am giving the Vernon 1/10 and I think that that is being charitable based on our experience there. We certainly will **NOT** be calling again and I would strongly recommend that other BITE readers do likewise �

After a recent trip to Alton Towers my family and our friends ( a group of four adults and five children ) chanced upon the Vernon Arms. We had arrived late looking for food and their kitchen had closed half an hour previously. The landlord helpfully tried to find us an alternative venue - without success. He then returned to his kitchen and prepared us a first class spread of a variety of well made, well filled, well garnished sandwiches complimented by some generous portions of scrumptious fries. His beer was excellent (Marston�s Pedigree and Black Sheep Bitter) and his wife and staff were friendly, engaging and helpful. As a licensee myself I fully understand the pressures of the business, especially on a busy weekend night and can only recommend this hostelry to any traveler to the area. We shall definitely search it out when we return to this part of the country.
