Really good Sunday lunch here yesterday - huge portions, well presented, tasty and very reasonably priced (£11.95 for the roast pork). The Ludlow Best at £3.10 a pint was in very good condition. The whole experience was top notch so, when they omitted a couple of drinks from the bill, we were more than happy to correct their error.

Been twice before and were reluctant to give it another go. Glad we did, however; the Ludlow Best was decent, the food was very good and the surroundings darkly cosy. None of this would have mattered, however, had the service not improved immeasurably. Where before we met only apathy, rudeness and irritation, this time we were served with enthusiasm, politeness and attentiveness by the two young barmen. A shining example of how pubs are only as good as their staff.

Still serving Salopian Gold and Wye Valley HPA as I found last year but the clip for the Ludlow Boiling Well was turned around.
|
Nice atmosphere, more like an old village pub. Beer decent. Worth the extra walk down the hill, but remember you've got to come back up!

A must visit bar with a great atmosphere and three real ales all well kept and all three were up to a high quality and very tasty - i tried all three!!! Ludlow Best, Shropshire Gold and HPA
Dog friendly we noticed as there were quiet a few in bar. the bar area is a lovely atmospheric area with wooden paneling and hops with fairy lights in
The only downside we had was the bar man - who's use of fowl language seemed to be uncontrollable and the big studs in his ear but each to their own. A bit down grading for a establishment like this.
But do definitely try this place for a pint and we will return to try some food as the meals going out look great.

Despite many visits to Ludlow previously, this was my first time here yesterday late afternoon in the partly wood panelled bar which also had an open fire, dried hops hanging from the wooden beams and table candles in wine bottles. The Ludlow Best was good; Salopian Gold and Wye Valley HPA were also available. The two smart dining rooms (the Oak and Slate Rooms) are down a passageway so formal dining is well away from the bar area. Fairly quiet with a respectable looking clientele while we were there, perhaps quiet because it is away from the town centre. Will revisit. P.S. Within walking distance is the Bridge (not on BITE) which sells Pedigree and a good Ludlow Gold and which is a more basic, locals' pub.

Quite a smart pub, though the staff don't really match the place to be honest. Out of the town centre, near the Bridge pub. Might be worth going to if you're after food too.
|
Nice pub, lots of character, limited beer selection, but decent.

Enjoyed both the Ludlow Best and Shropshire Gold in here. Very nice old fashioned feel in here despite the rather modern bar back. Panelled walls and wood floor with a few rugs on hops hanging from the beamed ceiling and everything on a slant. Catch this at the right time and it can be very good drinking atmospher at the wrong time the barstaff seem streatched. Fortunately there are two dining rooms through the back so dining kept to a minimum in the main bar.
|
Been here twice - once in 2011, once in 2012. On both occasions the service was very poor. Bar staff seemed more interested in talking to their friends than serving us.

Nice looking pub, with good food, but I wouldn't recommend it to anybody because of the shocking level of service. We waited half an hour for some food, found out that they hadn't sent our order to the kitchen, and it came a long stretch later by which time we were thoroughly fed up. On complaining, we were called liars by the acting manager. No need for it at all.

Three venues in one this place. Warm trad pub front room with big open fire, oak etc, modern restaurant in middle and comfortable restaurant at back. Id say nicer inside than it looks from the outside. 5 hand pulled beers, 4 local plus Abbot (why for Gods sake?). All in good nick. Food again not cheap but nice. Service was spot on when we were there, including being gently advised that there was some delay for food (there wasnt).

Easily the oddest pub experience of our recent holiday. The local ales were fine; the food OK (not amazing, but perfectly acceptable); the general decor charming enough. What really let it down was the service. There was one young man behind the bar doing his best to hold everything together, but the youngster taking food orders wasn't really up to the job and there needed to be at least one or two other people on duty for the place to run effectively, considering its size. Then there was an older chap, who I presumed to be the landlord, who didn't do very much behind the bar until about the time we were getting ready to leave. As we were paying up, he tried his very best to have an argument with another customer who wasn't happy with his Guinness and was very calmly asking to have something else instead (the old man loudly defended his inspection record and repeatedly and aggressively demanded the customer explain what was wrong with his drink). This completely unnecessary antagonism, though not directed at us, was almost as perfect a demonstration imaginable of how to ensure your customers will not return. Our subsequent online research away from BITE suggests this was not a one off affair. The friendly young chap with whom we were settling the bill at the time was physically shaking whilst this was going on, and we felt extremely sorry for him. We hope he finds a better employer sooner rather than later.

But it ain't cheap. And the staff, on my visit about three weeks ago, though pleasant enough were a bit Brideshead Revisited. I've cooled off on the Unicorn a bit since my last contribution.

Situated away from the town centre, but quite close to the railway station. What a great pub! The beer, the staff, the food, the rooms... all excellent. Definitely worth finding and enjoying! Had 4 real ales on when I visited, all local. 9/10 no problem. Could be 10/10 - will have to visit a few more times! :D

Renovated to a high standard after last years floods where the water was 6 foot deep inside the pub. A good range of ale and excellent bar food with friendly bar staff. Never tried the restaurant but looked nice. Sweet beer garden overlooking a small river though I couldn't apreciate it due to the rain...

I'm with GrantW. Much improved on the last couple of years. Was selling an ale from the Ludlow Brewing Co just a stone's throw up the road.
|
A recent visit showed much promise with a much better menu, tasty food, excellent service and much more competitive pricing. More reports please
|
Recently done up Big Time following the summer floods, but without any warm or friendly reception, lovely fireplace but no fire, no idea about the food but the feeling that drinkers not really welcome.
|
nice place if you want a quiet drink, very cosy and pretty welcoming, the range of ales was pretty good, though the range of lagers was poor (stella and carling)
|
Having visited the Unicorn recently I found the food to be poorly cooked, overpriced, inexperienced staff and a very ordinary menu. The beer was not up to much either, I found the Blue Boar to be much better value.
|
We were expecting something a bit special after viewing the Unicorn's website. Unfortunately we were disappointed. At 20.50 for a fillet steak you would expect good service. At The Unicorn you get practically none. You have to order food at the bar, get your drinks re-filled at the bar and once our food was on the table we didn't see a soul. In fact, the whole place seemed to be run by two barmen in their 20's who seemed uncomfortable waiting (or not) tables. The food was ok although the Nut Roast was dry with too little sauce and the plum sauce with the duck was hard to find or taste. If it had been priced as bar food the lack of service wouldn't have been a problem but at over 100 for 2 courses for 4 when one of us wasn't drinking we expected to be looked after. It had a good selection of real ales, although the Black Sheep wasn't at it's best. We won't be rushing back.
|
nice old pub, nice beers, nice food but a bit pricey for what we had (breakfast)but never the less we will return on our next visit to ludlow.
|
A word of warning. It's said to have changed hands, and I have heard from someone who recently found the food 'disappointing'.
|
Pretty good place with some slightly upmarket ideas about food. But it's excellent stuff. Try the fruit cake ice-cream - but don't drive for an hour or so afterwards! It is seriously boozy.
|
Thank goodness pubs like this still exist full of wood panelling and ancient beams- decor is old and the floor and ceiling slope drastically - adding to one's sense of disorientation after a few jars. The food is mediocre to good at times and the regulars are all fairly old. Beer garden by the stream is nice in the summer.
