Nice bar this. Always seems to attract an interesting cross section of 20/30 somethings who aren't over pretentious compared with most Angel joints. Music is pretty mixed but not over bearing and the barstaff are always friendly too. Good selection of beers.
8/10

Three ales on tap when I visited for the first time yesterday. Decided not to go for the safe option of Wandle, and instead tried a new one from the London Fields Brewery, which went down very nicely - especially accompanied by a packet of pork scratchings. Friendly guy behind the bar who was happy to offer tasters of the ale. Decent enough to entice me back were I in the area.

Was in there last month and there was an ale fest on. Two rather nice pints served by very welcoming staff and my mate equally enjoyed his special ales. It was a Friday night and had a nicemix of after work people and locals. Will visit again.

Popped in for the mini beer festival.......beer was fine, but saw the sign saying "Girls Girls Girls", and assumed there was some sort of marvellous attraction.....but no, it turned out to be the sign for the female sandbox. Damned disappointing !

Went in last week not realising they has a refurb, as it looks pretty much the same to me. Could do with a more efficient organisation of the furniture actually.
Two ales on: Wadworth 6x (you used to see that everywhere) and Rev James. Both perfectly drinkable. Food now of the British grub variety and music at a tolerable level. I like it here and dont know why I dont come here more often.
|
For those of you who have read recent reviews about the place looking shabby, I've been walking past this place for the last 8 weeks, about 3 weeks ago I wanted to visit the place only to find out it was closed for a refurb. 2 weeks ago they announced they were reopening and would have food on the menu. thought i might check out the beers in the not too distant future..
just thought other people might want to give this place a second chance as it does look pretty cool :/

Got character that is for sure, but not a great pub, the choice of drink poor and service while cheerful doesnt really make up for our dirty the place is.
|
In last night. It was dead but there was empty Tennent's Super cans in the urinal and what looked like empty wraps on the floor. For such a famous music pub the tunes playing were awful, unless "Near Wild Heaven" by REM and "Shiny Happy People" are your cup of tea. Nice enough barman but the name of the pub doesn't do justice to how dirty it actually is.
|
I wouldnt normally venture into a Fithy McNastys pub as Ive found they usually are, but called in here as I was passing, purely in the interests of research and under the influence of a few already. I found an interesting pub, very music orientated and advertising live music 4 days a week. Not that busy so difficult to judge the clientele , although the couple in the corner playing Jenga was somewhat mesmeric. Becks, Red Stripe, Guinness, Stella and Strongbow were on offer along with a single hand pump that produced a pretty poor pint of Black Sheep. An interesting pub that no doubt has a large fan base and serves it well.
|
Been a few times a very good pub tucked out of the way and not full of idiots from essex like the rest of mainstreet Angel.
Beers are good, could do with branching out to more interesting beers though rather than carlsberg etc
|
Another one of these celeby pubs, often full of to$$ers and wannabees. I dont mind the guiness, and the posters on the wall are intersting.
|
love it great place, but the landlady wasnt to friendly upon kick out..............

Legendary place. Great music. Great Guinness. Not great if you don't fancy imbibing the black stuff though. Bar staff once called me a c**t but I forgave them. One of the best pubs in the area definitely. Possibly not one for the over 40s though.
|
I practically lived here for six months and my memories of that time are but a happy, blurry haze. God bless Filthy's.
|
Er anonymous. there is a corridor which links the two bars (and has the gents toilets off it) so no yoiu dont need to walk out of the pub to get to the other bar. You obviously never needed a piss whilst you were there? And great news Rabbi is back!!
|
Im sorry but I love this place. Wasnt fortunate enough to go there during the "glory years" but for me its always worth the travel up from South London.
Ive seen an Inspiral Carpet, a sex pistol, a Libertine and Alan Silitoe in the place. And the Guinness is superb.
|
Top pub. Recently hosted our fantasy football auction and I've had a party or two there in the past which were all well handled. Still serves Strongbow in the face of the Magners onslaught as well, so that's worth an extra point alone.
|
Beers are a bit pricey, but I guess you can get away with it with a name like Filthys.
|
Actually changed my mind on this one about a month ago when my mate who lives next to it took me in for one. Ever so slightly iffy pint of Adnams but then I guess it isn't a real ale place, and points to them for trying. Yeah its ok. Funny how you can only get between the two bars via the street.

Nice spot. A bit limited on the beer front but the exemplary service and decent clientele make up for it. Bizarre toliet decor is worth the trip alone.

Irish pub with live music, food at lunch time, great atmosphere, well worth checking out.
Claudine - 17 Mar 2006 10:41 |
I don't like this place. Used to live at the end of the street and been in a few times. Too oppressive an atmosphere. Bad beers.

I read that article when in Ireland, it really was impressive, did'nt realise how big a name Filthy's was, I will always treasure those nights all those years ago.
|
Best pub in London.
I think the fact that its not blatantly Irish makes it more Irish.... Finest guinness in north london me tinks as well.....

I read a recent article in the Irish Sunday Independent about Gerry and Filthy's, the Pogues and the whole scene that developed there, very impressive piece, its a time that is sorely missed indeed, I had some of the best nights of my life there.
anonymous - 26 Aug 2004 16:17 |
I used to go here when Filthies first started up, for a good 8 years. Phenomenal boozer, met my wife here on an all-day Paddys day bender, when the bar opened at 8 in the morning,Gerry wandering around, Dave behind bar, Rabbi pinching ars*s, Shane trying to get out through the bog window.....
Robin Prime - 18 Aug 2004 13:59 |
A good bar but as the last post says nothing like the glory days when Gerry and Shane and guests were in residence.Never in the history of bar rooms were so many heads , marraiges, hearts and bones broken.I did'nt have my wedding reception there, it was much too dangerous a place for that. Though not as good as it was in the glory years of 1994-99, Filthy's (now stripped of its Irish theme)still offers a good place for a pint and a chat with friendly bar staff. Just that bit off the main Islington drag to keep it clamer than most in this area. One I keep coming back to and where I had my wedding reception!

Great pub, great atmosphere, fantastic entertainment!

Good Guiness.

nice traditional pub, friendly barstaff (which is rare),laidback and non pretentious.they seem to have something on most nights and they have never charged me to get in....yet.

I missed the primal scream book launch last friday, damn it.but I hear the pop quiz is coming back on mondays......can't wait
carrie - 6 Nov 2003 00:49 |
Filthy's has improved in leaps and bounds this year. Live free music in a pub, seems a distant memory. It's getting the old feel back. ROCK n ROLL. I went to a book launch there on Friday, dancing on tables etc. NICE

What a gem of a pub - cosy, nice people, great food.
Helen Bailey - 5 Nov 2003 13:14 |
I saw the Alabama 3 play acoustic guitar set at Filthy's the other week, couldn't believe it was free to get in! nowhere in London like it,even the drinks are normal prices...amazing. Has anyone been to their other place (Absinth shot bar in Shoreditch) yet? now that is surreal! carrie
carrie - 5 Nov 2003 12:43 |
Great place, great food, nice bar maids. It makes you want to down whiskeys and snort vodka all day.
benny - 5 Nov 2003 12:22 |
First went there couple of years ago but place is sooooo much better now. Best guinness ive ever tasted in London and a proper rocknroll venue unlike Hard Rock Cafes etc which just play at it. Seen tom hingley, Irvin Welsh, Alabama 3 and Libertines play down there recently. All for free. Things like this only normally happen in Dreamworld...

More fabulous than last summer - Now decked out with original posters featuring Siouxsie, SPIZZOIL and cool stars SPIZZ ... DO hang out there - especially Wednesdays ;-)

I've been there a few times with the libertines, never saw Johnny Depp there though sadly, if I had known he would be there, I would have been in there every possible chance! It is a nice place though!
Elle - 7 Oct 2003 13:12 |
Johnny Depp used to hangout there when Shane Mac Gowan used to go there, I know cos I drank with them one night !Sorry Hemz, that was years ago not when he filmed 'From Hell'.He was drop dead gorgeous and unfortunately with Kate then...bitch.Heard Shane and the old Fithy's crew are drinking in the Boogaloo in highgate, its apparently owned by the guy that set up Fithy's , hearing good things about it, gonna look up Johnny again!!
Marie - 8 Aug 2003 10:36 |
This place was great! I wandered in on a punk rock pilgrimage hoping to meet one the Pogues or the Libertines. I ended up singing Dylan songs with a bunch of buskers. If you see a bald guy with a guitar named Jud, buy him a pint for me!
|
Johnny Depp used to work here, while he was filming From Hell. Honest to god.
Hemz - 2 Jul 2003 11:27 |
Went back for the first time in a year on friday. As before only cleaner and friendlier. Having travelled from Hammersmith I wish they could open a West London Filthys to save me a 15 cab fare home. Ill be back.
andy bentley - 1 Jun 2003 17:18 |
It's going to be open from 12 soon, with great music again and a fiendish pop quiz
anonymous - 22 May 2003 14:28 |
Good News lads & lasses, just given them a bell and they are open again from 5 this evening after being closed for two months - hope they haven't rippied the heart and soul out of the place with a changing rooms make over
shamus - 9 May 2003 13:28 |
Is this pub shut for good now? There were certainly no signs of life when we tried to go there yesterday. :-/
|
A fine pub for a booze fueled chat and some cracking music!
Trousers - 25 Feb 2003 15:33 |
What happened to the quiz night? It used to be great.
anonymous - 30 Jan 2003 17:11 |
The best pub in London. Frequented by poets / rock stars / losers / abusers / media-knobs / lads / oirish men with no teeth / me. The best pop / film quiz in London (monday 9pm) and great Thai food (don't they all). The back room's more relaxed & is quiet all week except fri & sat.
