My comments were supposed to have been for The Cavern!

This pub is a dive but does have great music. I have been going there twice a week but never again. I had just finished my first pint when the landlord came over and aggressively said to me buy a drink this is a pub! I indignantly said alright mate when he turned round and threateningly told me to get out his pub. I have never been spoken to like this before so I was happy to leave. The guy should go on a customer relations course as he has anger issues. His loss, there were four of us who went there regularly and spent money.
|
A great little find! Popped in before a wedding in the area and had a delicious large fish and chips, jacket spud, vino and pint of bud (forgive me!) all for twenty quid! Bonkers! We lingered for a couple more we liked it so much. Cheap but very cheerful.
|
Not the greatest place!! 1 ale on and that tasted stale and 'vinegary', both bar staff and management disagreed but did refund but then another bar girl went on to top up the Pride and passed on to next customer in the same glass!! Have never seen this before!! shocking! On the plus side, locals were friendly!
|
A decent local pub, loads of sport on TV, beer is well priced by modern standards. Not the place to bring a "date" but perfectly acceptable to meet mates for a beer to to watch any sport. Toilets could do with a spuce up though.
|
Large rowdy open-plan establishment right next to Raynes Park station. There's a large central horseshoe bar and plenty of TV screens all around showing football, horse racing and other sports. The place was very busy and reasonably good value for money. 2 ales were on - Pride & Adnams. There were also a couple of Westons ciders - Bounds Scrumpy & Cider Twist Raspberry. I arrived with fairly low expectations and these were exceeded. Although the Wetherspoons just up the road was better. Worth combining the two though.
|
Bit of an everything pub, service very changable, real beer OK. food inexpensive but so-so. However, if you want to watch football NOT on 3D, then this isn;t the place for you....
|
Brought here many moons ago by my brother-in-law and sister-in-law. In those days (1990s ?) it had not one but two bar billiards tables side by side. Expect those have long since gone, but I'll never forget it.
|
Had a good pint of ale here, and they were happy to change the one that was off. Refreshingly cheaper than London pubs.
Coeliacs beware, however. Even the baked potatoes contain gluten(?!), we were told.
A bit too sport-oriented for my liking, but good if that's your thing.
|
They've done a refit! And a huge well done it is too because they seemed to have read my previous review! New upholstery, new tables and new paintwork. Tried it on opening day and despite the usual teething troubles with the (new) tills everything still seemed reassuringly familiar to the old place with the characters still frequenting.
|
A superlative pub with some great characters, loads of TV screens for various footie matches,a secret garden,2 cheerful barmaids, just don't go in there if Chelsea are losing a live match
|
Large open plan pub. Rugby themed for the six nations. Pride, GK IPA and Brains Bread of Heaven which was fine. One for a quick pint while changing trains.
|
This large John Barras pub has plasma screens for the football throughout, a dartboard and a pool table. Being so close to the station there was a transient crowd, but the barman was friendly and my Guinness was good and I counted four ales along with the standard draught selection. Cheap food is churned out and there was a sickly sweet smell present which wasnt very pleasant.
Id pop in again if I had time before my train arriving, but I wouldnt make this my destination pub.
|
A plea:
Please do NOT turn this pub into a Gastro Fest, a poncey wine bar or a Wetherspoons (though this is hardly likely as there's one about 10 doors away). DO give it a spuce up, a clean, guest beers and keep the TVs and Dartboard for this could be a brilliant pub.
It's not too bad as it comes now actually.
|
Busy street corner pub opp the station. London Pride, Bombardier and a guest ale on draught. I opted for the guest ale which was seriously flat n watery tasting, not great. 6/10
|
This is a fairly grotty pub, although it does have a lot of potential. I live locally and only visit because they've got the football on.
The staff have ranged from polite to downright rude. One got extremely annoyed at me because I'd pulled the bar chair over to - guess what? - the bar! That was a while ago though and I haven't had any problems for a while.
Having seen the chef - dirty clothes, heavy smoker - I wouldn't buy any more food from here. It's generally poor quality burger and chips fare anyway.
The clientele is a bit rough, mostly blue collar workers and quite a few swearing chavs, but they're friendly enough. Things get a bit anxious when there's a game on, especially if Chelsea are losing.
There are several TVs and a couple of projectors (one decent, one very poor). Lots of vantage points from where you can see the game, though none of them are perfect.
But I do love the high ceiling in the main bar. If they'd only decorate - and get rid of the stale old pre-smoking ban carpet - it could be a lovely characterful pub. Raynes Park badly needs one!
|
I agree that since the smoking ban this place really stinks. Nice bar staff and an eclectic mix of punters.
|
Fairly typical large suburban pub, opposite RP station. Now fully open plan although I suspect there were several rooms as originally built when the railway came through and the suburb was expanded. A Barras chain these days, beers on were Pride, Bombardier and Stonehenge Pigswill. Average and passable condition. There is a dartboard to the left of the bar, assuming entrance from Coombe Lane.
|
This pub could seriously do with a makeover. Now the smoking ban is in, the place really smells of stale beer and sweat.
John Barras should spend a bit of money doing it up as Raynes park is in desperate need of a good quality boozer.
|
I like this pub. Friendly with a great atmosphere. I found the models/barmaids pretty good too.
|
Doesn't seem to have got noticeably quieter despite the arrival of Wetherspoons just down the road. Barstaff can be very hit or miss - some are excellent and remember exactly when you arrived at the bar while others (often the glamorous girls who are just doing bar work to supplement their modelling careers) will make a beeline for the loudest or trendiest bloke who has just arrived. Beer is cheap, and in fact seems cheaper than it used to be - probably as a way of competing with JDW. Two big screens and a number of smaller TVs for the sport, and a pool table completes the picture.
|
I was there last Sat and there was a live band on - very good it was too. The is a Weatherspoons opening in the next few days that should give it a run ofr its money.

A great pub since the new manager Matt has taken over. Great screens to watch sports and a good selection of beers with one of the finest drops of Guinness in London. Good food and something for everyone. Recommend.
|
I've been back to this place quite a few times lately as its improved tenfold since the new blokes taken over. So good in fact I'm heading out there this evening.
The beers fresh, foods good and the service great.
|
I have to say - since Matt's taken over the place has improved quite a bit.
Good selection of Cask Ale's have now become available rather than going off constantly - they even had a Gales ale which I'd never seen in London before
Proper roasts on a sunday - the lamb I had last week was actually pretty good for a pub
Most of the local nasties have been barred
|
I think this is a good place, even though I'm much younger then the average person there they still managed to outdrink me.
Good staff who dont mind giving a pint away when u spilled some and made a total mess out of it.
So my next holiday to London will surely bring me back out ther!
|
terrible food and terrible pub. better than the junction tavern though.
anonymous - 26 Nov 2005 10:44 |
has a few to many fruit machines that give it a cheap look. the food is also bad - even if it is 2 for 1 - it has a quiz machine that looks respectable (latest touch screen type) and pool table that are both great fun. its much better since its been refurbished and a great place to chill out.
anonymous - 20 Oct 2005 14:49 |
Only been ther once ....... That was once too often. Worst pub food I've EVER tasted. Good job I was in good company, or the place would have got 0/10
|
what a sh*te hole. This is the place to go for the over 80s. It's full of pensioners and retired builders complete with retired bums. The food tastes like sawdust too. Never had such disgusting food Oh, and saw someone get beaten near to death one night too Is this near a nasty council estate??
anonymous - 12 Sep 2005 00:10 |
this place defines the definition of a sh*t pub. full of nasty hobos, packed with them outside on the benches at 11 in the morning with their pint of larger. the smell wants to make me throw up, never mind the food. all i can say bout this sump is....ugh
anonymous - 3 Aug 2005 00:50 |
gimme a D! gimme a U! gimme an M! gimme a P! what's that spell?!? yep, we got ourselves a 24 carat sh1thole here. terrible place. no kronenbourg last night, murderous punters. absolutely appaling clientele: mostly tramps and hobos. love it.

every saturday night you can see "live" karioke......

since its refurbishment it has gone a bit too "politically correct" no sitting or smoking at the bar,and facilitys for people who don't go there! but clean and tidy;and still good pub grub and beer.juke box still quiet, but pool table has appeared, given time the new people who run it should realise what the regulars really want, and a great pub it will be again.

RPT has been bought and is currently under refurbishment until the 11th June.

Used to work in this pub in the 70s when a family called the Davis's owned it,"nuff said there" Did great food nice family Pub then, lot of Professional people during the week had a little Public bar with a lot of Irish people drank there

Sadly in need of refurbisment - it seems that all the upholstery has 2ft slashes in the fabric and dirty foam poking out.
Popular, but it does seem that the genteel folk of leafy West Wimbledon take their custom elsewhere.
The guest beer policy that led to the pub being in the 2003 Good Beer Guide seems to have been abandoned - only standard chain pub real ales are on offer now.
Martin - 11 Mar 2004 12:10 |
used to frequent it in the 80's - would dearly love to trace the manager and his wife John and Connie Rogers if anyone can help...please

I miss this place! While on vacation, staying with my mother in law who lives in Raynes Park, I visited this Pub numerous times in the summer of 2002 and 2003. Great location across from Raynes Park Station. Good service, friendly folks. Adolph Rodriguez Los Angeles, Ca. USA

one of the nicest pubs in raynes park.good choice of beers and great grub.freindly faces and great bar staff always there, only criticism is that juke box is never on or too quiet, but thats why its best to go to the cavern for decent music, albeit in need of some more contemporary rock.

I look forward to visiting Raynes Park and in particular the RPT. Had some great lunches in here. Staff are great and the barman is dishy, very warm and friendly pub.

Used to go here loads during the week. Good for Footy if not stuck behind a pillar and Cheap Beeros. Barmaids are huge! Saw a good looking girl here once I think. I've seen a tramp washing hinmself in the bogs once and saw a great pub fight between two grandads both well over 60 years. They gave up after a minute or so and no one else in the pub was the slight bit interested.
Watch out for OldWimbledonian saddos!

I must admit the place does stink and you need a gas mask to get through the smoke, but I have found an ingenious plan works at this place. Get there at lunchtime when it is busy, the office types order there food and give a table number. The barstaff, who appear to be cloned from a piece of stale cheese, bring the food out and just walk aroung the pub shouting "Brunch" and dont use the table numbers, you then just say yeah, they bring the food over, you get a nice free meal and if lucky see an office type give the bar staff a well deserved tounge lashing.

This used to be my local and I thought it was great, but we're going back a few years (when a nice bloke called Keith was in charge). Food was excellent, so was the beer, and always had sport of some kind on the TV, what more do you want?
Andy - 22 Jul 2003 15:08 |
I live nearby and can tell you the pub is awful. If you don't think it stinks to high heaven then it's probably because you do too! Surly service from most the bar staff is just a joke. Lazy, dirty, smelly and couldn't care less about it sums it up. A brighter note; kitchen staff in my experience serve up cheap and tasty pub grub with freindly service. But all in all is a good reason Wetherspoons are building nearby.
