user reviews of the Red Lion, Norwich

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Little I can add to previous reviews except to say that Saturday's cask ales were Greene King's Bo66y, Woodforde's Bure Gold, Adnams Ghost Ship, Beer Monkey's Blonde and Elmtree's Burston's Cuckoo. A great start to our afternoon.

Excellent real ale showcase. On the bar were Woodfordes Reedlighter and Bure Gold, Ubu Purity, Hop Back Summer Lightning, and Grain 316 which was superb. Food is available but check times. As Blue Scumpy says it a lovely spot by the river and ancient bridge and for us only 10 minutes walk of the railway station and will be our point of call between trains in future.

The Red Lion was our first stop in Norwich yesterday. It's a corner pub with a nice situation next to the River Wensum. There were plenty of people in when we arrived at 11am yesterday. We believed that opening time was 11. But the number of customers would indicate it had been open earlier than that. 6 ales were on - Woodfordes Bure Gold, Elmtree Winter Solstice, Oldershaw Autumn Hue, Adnams Ghost Ship, Hardy & Hansons Rocking Rudolph & Green Jack Waxwing. The Winter Solstice was very nice indeed. A bridge next to the pub is Norwich's oldest and from it, you could see a number of people making full use of the river in various boats, even on a December morning. A good pub.

Small pub hidden away but very busy with football fans and locals when we visited on a warm summers evening. Good range of well kept fans. Prides itself on food, particularly pizzas. Small river terrace and drinking area. Well worth coming out of the centre of the city for.

Traditional pub, 6 handpumps available with 5 in use on my visit. A bit pricy but a nice pub in a decent location.

A posh pub for posh people. Ale was good & the food looked decent as well. All in all, a very nice pub - but not one for a loud night out

Discovered this pub last week by accident. An excellent pub and I really wished I lived nearer (Herts is a bit far). The beer was excellent and served in a really peaceful atmosphere - no music or silly distractions. A proper pub. We will return.

Fantastic pub by the river - on a sunny day it can't be beaten for sitting outside with a cold pint!

Returned again and four ales on, including two locally brewed Woodforde's beers. Quick and friendly service and a had a pleasant time sat out the back overlooking the river.

Pleasant pub in a great location. The pub is right next to the River Wensum and has nice outside seating along side it. Six hand pumps with Wherry, Deuchars, Spitfire, Adnams Bitter, London Pride and Bombadier. In the current Woodfordes Ale Trail and it was also in the previous one. Not to far from the railway station and quite close to the city centre.

A short walk from the station and the cathedral. A reasonable sized pub with a lot of outside seating alongside the river. Three ales available on my last visit.

If for some bizarre and possibly smack induced reason, the Grim Reaper offered me one last Sunday lunch before delivering my sorry arse straight to all those pointy sticks and hot coals, I would without a doubt ask for a final summer afternoon feast in the Red Lion.

Everything about the RL`s effort in this area in flawless the quality of the food is outstandingly succinctly, the variety extensive, the prices affordable and the portions simply huge. Best of all there is no tiresome waiting before you can get stuck into your meal as the food is dished out from a constantly replenished food counter where you simply pick your mush, have it put on your plate and then disappear to a big seating area to start stuffing your face. Jesus, my stomach is turning in knots just thinking about it!

If the RL was to be judged on the quality of its Sunday afternoon efforts alone it would deserve a 10, but with my objective hat on I have to concede that its other features dont quite reach the perfection it achieves on its weekend food menu. The pub does deserve extra marks for its natural, bare and earthy interior that doesnt have a hint of rank commercialism. However, despite this there isnt anything about the place that grabs you by the jaffers and make you think wow, this is amazing! despite the fact that it is pleasant. Some shine is also taken off by the slightly smokey interior that could really do with some air conditioning to at neuter at least a few of the cancer cells that start dancing on the inside of your lungs during a bad night.

Still on the upside the drink selection is pretty good, the prices average for Norwich and the location pretty picturesque, something that also helps the clientele to be pleasant, even if a little on the sedate side.

Overall I`m going to go for a 7/10 for the RL as it is an above average establishment in a general sense.

But if you want a brilliant Sunday lunch, fight mountains, rivers, plagues and all forms of pestilence to get there!
