Finally a pub that was open on Sunday lunchtime in St Helens (I managed to find 7 closed or demolished)! Not only was it open. But this was the pub of the day. There are 2 comfortable rooms, a knowledgeable landlord and a good selection of ales - Greenfield Thirst Born, George Wright Blonde Moment, Purple Moose Snowdonia, Oakham Raucous Reindeer & JHB, Vibrant Forest Black Forest, Ilkley Mary Christmas & Heavy Industry Nelson's Eye. I went for the Lilleys Strawberry Cider.

In the Beer Guide and although beer was unexceptional (but OK) this was a very welcoming and traditional pub in the St Helens tradition.

New landlord since October

Friendly No Frills Great Boozer. Keep the beer well and good prices especially Guinness whcih is the best for miles around. Best dartboard in town, and good pool table. Good screens for sports.

Often has a good atmosphere on a weekend evenings and particpate in local darts and doms teams through the week.

Starting going in after The Turks changed their Darts set up and its a good place to go if visiting Turks to & from town.

Was very run down before it closed, beers were poor and the clients tended towards the mentally ill and dispossesed.

Well established wed night rock night for over 15 years, closed its doors just over a year ago after a period of bad mangement. True, the beer was nothing special but the place had a long history and a well established community - it has been missed. Due to re-open this week but as yet doubtful if the rock nights will continue - watch this space to see what the new landlord is like LOL

this was always known as the place to get served if you wern't actually old enough to drink (mainly because it was opposite loweis) I have no idea if this is still the case, as lowies is no more - and obviously now im 26 its been a good 10 years since ive ventured in there!

What can I say so much has changed since the last posting....The pub is now very tired and at the wrong end of town and three people left in at last orders on a saturday night does not look good !!...It has only a very small selection of the usual beers which on the occasions I have been in recently have not tasted very good it has no guest ales and the bottle beers are the usual boring fair...There has been a change of management recently maybe we will see a change but personally I think not the pub I think has had it's day and nothing short of a miracle will help but you never know...Perhaps a change of beer or beer which at least tastes good might be a start.....Sorry but thats the way it is...

Fantastic public house, a real friendly place with good regulars/locals , some are a bit strange but harmless, renound for quality beer at very low prices, all in all if you are looking for a good night of english hospitality this is the only place in the country let alone St.Helens to be.
