A really super London pub that hasn't been taken over by one of the big chains. Tucked away behind Belgrave Square, it certainly isn't going to attract passing trade, but come mid week evening time, it is jammed. Must visit if you are in the area.

My second pub of the day in SW1 was this Shepherd & Neame pub again tucked way in a mews.
A quaint little pub but beware of the dangerous men's toilets as they have a steep step as you enter, a few pints too many and you could come a cropper!
3 of the house breweries ales were available on draught. Spitfire, Kent Best & Master brew which was good.
Mid afternoon and the sun was shining so we sat outside in the roped off seating area.
An okay pub but I did find it a little drab, I'm sure with a crowd or in the evening it's more lively...maybe I'll revisit to test the theory.

Perfect little pub, tucked away. Warm welcome and good beer.
Yes Rex, I think you have been a little harsh on the high tables and stools, efficiency is such an important factor, and as a group of architects visiting last night, we considered this spatial matter in some depth. A decent bar with genuine Irish accents, more Embassy Regal King Size than Irish Embassy, excellent Guinness, and the first time I have had potatoes on COCKTAIL STICKS, delicious. Even the dog didn't mind as I stepped on him on the way to the subterranean bog. cathaoireacha x

Great little gem, well worth seeking out.

Another quirky mews pub, tucked away in a hidden corner of Belgravia and looking hugely inviting as you approach it. Better from the outside than the inside though; something about the decor and fittings didn't really work for me. Has very bright lights and high tables and stools, which made it feel a bit like a wine bar selling Shepherd Neame beers.
A rather appealing hidden gem buried deep in the streets of Belgravia. It was troublesome to try and judge too many aspects of the H & G as it was very late when we finally itched up, and it was only us in. Happily, although she was clearly uncomfortable with it, the barmaid (licensee?) did allow us to take a quick half - in my case a very palatable one too in good condition. Whilst there was nothing fundamentally striking about the place, I can imagine it is a very convenient and well-subscribed pub at busier periods amongst the cognoscenti who know of it, and rarer still, its exact whereabouts.
What I found was promising, but I'd like to get back here at some point and give it another whirl. Hopefully then I'll get more of the measure of the place.

I went in here last night to watch the footie , tis a great little battle cruiser, the staff are very friendly and the landlord is a credit to his profession. while its true to say that it's a small pub , it MORE than makes up for it in its great service and quality ales. It's located in a little hideaway of a mews but well worth locating. The only downside ??? , the toilets are tiny and a little pongy , but hey , its not as if your gonna spend all night in there is it ????
Anyway , you really should check out this nice little pub !!!!! , The Irish embassy always drink in here, so what does THAT tell you !!!!
Fantastic little boozer in Belgravia. The last time I was there I had a great time, with loads o folk from the Irish Embassy around the corner in attendance ! Great Irish landlord who really knows how to run a pub. Makes his punters welcome but without being cheesy like so many of them can be. The only thing I would change is the lighting - if someone turned the lights off and handed out candles this would be the best little pub in London !
Lovely little pub - very tiny but well kept Shepherd Neame ales, great lunchtime grub and a charming Irish landlord. Only gripe is the lighting which is too cold and doesn't suit this otherwise place.
Have fond memories of this pub from years ago, so now i am living within walking distance, i had to revisit.... I guess that why you should never look back, only forward.... It doesnt fit my rose tinted memories... That said, it is still a very good pub and the spitfire i drank was perfectly fine.
Maidenman describes this pub very well but on a Thursday night there were probably 50 people plus outside so on a summer night the pub can accomodate two or three times the number that can be squeezed into the interior.
The interior itself is fine and I found the high tables and tables fairly comfortable. Perhaps the only anomalous feature for me was a flat screen TV in the upper corner between the bar and window.
Overall this is a good pub and I'll be back here next time I'm in the area.

A very small single room, albeit with additional room upstairs(not visited). Situated on the corner of a street and a mews, a few traditional tables with stools and upholstered banquettes, plus the odd earlier stated high tables and stools, not to my taste either Rex. Dark wood panelling, laminated cheap wood effect floor, beamed ceiling; the pub name is picked out on the etched windows. Plasma screen in the front corner. I reckon 20 people in here and it would be full. Shepherd Neame, Kent Best, Spitfire and Whitstable on, the Whitstable was clear but tired and lifeless. An unusual touch is the umberella stand by the door, seems like a touch from another age.
Maybe I have been a little hard on the high tables and high stools. I don't paricularly like them, but I can understand that in a small pub like this they are an efficient way of making the best use of limited space.
An excellent pub in a superb central location. It's wonderful that places like this survive. Fine Kentish ale, and I like the high tables/stools - it's a clever way of maximising use of what is a pretty small space. Very friendly staff who also provided excellent recommendations for local eating. A real gem.
Small mews-type pub, full of Irish accents at office closing time (presumably the embassy is nearby). It's also a bit odd seeing a Sheps pub full of St Patrick's Day banners. Didn't like the high stools/tables much, but the Kent's Best was on good form and the landlord was a friendly chap.
Went for lunch today and have not a bad word to say! The bar staff and publican were very friendly, the Spitfire was excellent and the steak pie was top notch. It's nicely hidden away so shouldn't attract large crowds, which is good because it's not the world's largest pub!
Yep - well kept beer; excellent grub and a happy staff ... what more can you want .... but please keep this place a secret
Closed at 5pm yesterday.......no rating left.
A fabulous little local where the staff, lunches and beer are all superb. However, the lighting is dire. This is a cosy place with, bizarrely, the starkest lights which eliminate any atmosphere at a stroke. I can't be the only blind punter (or staff member!) so hopefully this may change in time...
This is a small Shepherd Neame pub tucked away down a mews behind Belgrave Square. This was one of my regulars when I used to work around the corner in Seaford House. But it seems to have had a fairly recent makeover, the main change being apart from a general smartening up the introduction of some of the most hideous high stools and high tables I have seen. But I still really like this little pub, and usually manage to drop in whenever I am in the area. My best wishes to Aiden, the new guvnor if anyone can make a go of this pub, he can.
Love the attention from the staff and well kept beer, but if there's one thing to be said about the place then it's the fantastic sandwiches. Great for a quiet, relaxing afternoon if you've got some time to kill.
A decent little local down a nice mews (you can smell the money as you walk), selling decent Shepherd Neame beer.
Turned up on a Friday evening when there was a toffs 70's-80's disco on - all very weird, especially when they played Eton Rifles and London Calling. Hard to tell whether it was with brainless gusto or wonderful irony that Petronella, Henry their chums sang along at the top of their voices.
Worth a quick half for the location.
Nice quiet pub. Well kept beer. friendly if 'understated' staff. A great place to tuck yourself away from the elements on a wet weekday.
Came here to watch the Rugby World Cup Final and despite the disappointing result. I can honestly say that we had a great time. My party of twenty were given the upstairs room to watch the game in and despite only one barman called John who was friendly, knowledgeable and by himself. Service was brillant. An excellent pub and we would return.

One man's 'tatty' is another man's 'well worn'. Proper little pub with good beers and friendly service. Can get pretty busy immediately after work, though.
Doesn't open at weekends, remember
Tatty naff little pub in need of some TLC. Amazed it does any trade at all. It looks more like DEL BOYS peckham flat than a pub. Dont mention the food OH DEAR ME!
Finally visited when it was open and to be frank I expected a lot more. Visited around 2 on Monday afternoon and there were only 3 other people there. It is situated in a nice place and I can imagine it being nice sat outside with a pint during summer. But sat inside in February it didn't really do anything for me.
During the summer many tables are placed outside for eating. A decent menu and it does get very busy at lunchtime and in the evenings. The mews location means it safe to stand outside as only the occassional Chelsea tractor goes by. A pub we go back to repeatedly.
Lovely Pub to sit outside as said before. Only had Spitfire on when we visited. As per all Belgravia pubs expensive!
Great pub to sit outside on an unusually warm late September evening. The landlors was great, as were the free sandwiches. Good atmosphere and a lovely setting. It's an oasis, like you were a million miles from the grot and tat of Victoria station! We always have a great time there.
This place knows how to make you feel welcome. Tight fit but cosy... great food, great service and good beer...
Can't understand how a Shepherd Neame pub generates such excitement? Nice enough place but the beer isn't up to much. The ales are watery and Oranjeboom is just another mass produced lager, surely?

A friend of mines wife arranged a surprise birthday bash on a Saturday. The theme was POKER and the person with the most chips won a trophy! Catering was great, homemade Lamb Rogan Josh with all the trimmings (we are big curry fans and we got exactly what we wanted). Great to have the pub to ourselves as it normally closes at the weekend but theyll open for you and no charge for the hire! Beers are kept well. The Bar Manager, Robert, is so great we gave him some time off so he could join the game- guess who won the trophy !!! We'll keep him behind the bar next time!
Old fashion pub, were service counts. And beer matters!
Fabulous, friendly pub (people and staff). I took my department there in the Summer and the landlady laid on a "Cream Tea and champagne" brunch in the upstairs room.Everyone loved it and no charge for the room.
Like the barman, it's all a bit weird but quite cool and friendly nonetheless. Disappointed to learn that it was Thatch's local. Kind of put me off a bit. Still, it's not the pub's fault. My guess is that something in the water at the Horse and Groom, intended to poison the iron lady, was drunk by the barman. A bit like a plot from Allo Allo.

Small, friendly pub in a small mews serving the full range of Shepherd Neame beers which were in very good form on my visit. Worth a visit if in the area.
Closed on Sunday afternoon, so head for the Nags Head or Grenadier
Oh, I must have got the wrong pub. Booked the upstairs function room...well I say room, but you couldn't swing a cat in there, and there was no door. Function alcove would be more appropriate. Food was cold, and to be honest fairly crap.
On the plus side, the locals were friendly, there's a good range of beers and snacks (reindeer sausages, etc.). The barman was friendly, but a bit strange, and didn't strike be as being very well organised.
I struggle to think of a reason to revisit this place - probably best left to the locals.
A wonderful traditional pub with friendly staff. Quite small but this adds the ambience. The manager Robert learns everyones name after a couple of visits and provides free sandwichs on Friday evenings. The best of a number of excellent pubs in the area.

My favourite local, makes the best sandwiches in london that I've found. Beer is good, bloody marys are great and Robert's Special Pimms is outstanding - just don't drink 4-5 on a sunny lunch/afternoon if you have any work to do for the rest of the day! PS: Robert is the bar manager.
All round a great palce that I try to go to as often as I can!

My local for work and we are regulars there most Fridays and the odd tempting lunchtime. Great quirky pub at the end of a pretty mews. Nice pint of Spitfire, and Oranjeboom too. Margaret Thatcher's local too.

Simply a great pub! It makes perfectly good sense, since the publican turned out to be the nicest and most knowledgeable of his kind I've met in London so far.

In the late Sixties I lived on Chester Street and the Horse & Groom was my local. It was the best then and each visit since then has been just as good. Ate outside last June and was happy to find time has not changed my favourite local. Thanks!

Top notch mews pub. Staff are friendly, and make a real effort to look after their regulars. Excellent beer and some inventive cocktails - try the Jelly Babys. Also much better Bloody Marys than the famous ones up the road in the Grenadier.

Went in there on Monday evening (21/7/03) Gorgeous exterior and they serve a good pint of Spitfire as well as some interesting lagers. The Barman was a bit of a surly numpty though.
