i used to work at the windmill part time about 7 years ago, and i loved it. now i find that after a horrible refurb its now closed. tragic.great landlord and landlady(she from south carolina,he ex punk qpr supporter)and fantastic music. now were just left with the insipid theme and brand pubs with no face and no character. let her R.I.P.

Used to come here a lot. We called it "The Pub That Looks Like It's On A Council Estate". The hand-pump Tetley's was always really good and decently priced, and the staff weren't fly-by-nights so they got to know their punters. It was a cosy place in a slightly seedy way. The toilets were a bit foul... that smell never leaves you.

Kinda predictable really!

that's why i said a BUS from Camden, it's only 5 mins on the 24 or 29 !! Look, I'm not saying it is the greatest pub in the world, but it is much better than it was ? Do you suggest that they keep the sticky chairs and sticky carpet ??? it hasn't exactly changhed by all recognition. i am in favour for pubs being traditonal - hey, bring back saloon and public bars i say - but progress is progress. it is hardly an office pub ! Don't work there I'm afraid just a casual observer. If you want your old pub back, why not try the Mortimer just along the road, cheap ale, seperate bars nice. P.s there was never any proper ale in there in the first place !!!!

PS - why would it be full of students fresh from Camden market? Camden is miles away and there are plenty of dive bars up there for them to frequent..

Don't run / work for the pub by any chance do you? Wouldn't surprise me. Looking forward to all the other positive comments that you obviously expect.

I'm glad you've got rid of the people who enjoy genuine pubs selling proper ale instead of cheap wine which, let's face it, is there simply to try and attract lots of short-skirted office workers. I suspect the pub has lost many regular customers who used to enjoy the atmosphere which you call dark and dingy. London has plenty of other great pubs to go in instead of your's.

Cheers.

hmmmm, interesting comments. However, I must disagree. let's remember how it was: dark, dingy, sticky carpet and full of students - fresh from a bus from Camden Market. I agree no-one likes a McPub, but on this occassion it was for the better. The atmosphere remains the same, you still got the pool table and if you wanna reminice you can go to the toilets as no refurb has hit them (as per the norm with pub refurbs. Interesting comment about the wine glasses - maybe it's because wine is 4.99 a bottle - cheapest in town ! This all said, I'd give it a wide berth for the next few weeks as the building work above is well noisy.

PS - last time I was in there, half the people had glasses / bottles of wine. A sure sign that things have changed.

Get a clue Mark. It's turned from a cosy corner pub into a soulless chain-like pub. More room? The couches and new tables take up more room than ever before. The round table with the high chairs right next to the door ensures that anyone sitting at the bar has to squeeze in every time someone enters the pub.

Excellent music - what kind are they playing now? It was a great mix before. And as I said, the staff haven't changed. Always good.

The difference is that there are a million and one pubs that look like this. Who needs another?

Good! Im glad you people dont realise a good thing when it hits you, more room and beer for the genuine people who like the environment and friendly bar staff and excellent music!!

I totally agree! I used to go in there before gigs at the Astoria and, before going to see Frank Black a couple of weeks back, I visited the Windmill as per tradition. I almost cried. Why oh why has the place been revamped. It now looks like an all bar one or one of those oh so trendy places. Bar staff are still the same but I won't be going back. A real shame.

Devastating. I returned to the Windmill after a two-month absence to discover it's had a character-removing makeover and is now indistinguishable from any other bland, soulless chain pub in the country.
The old carpet's been replaced with laminated flooring, the cosy wooden booths have been ripped out and replaced with low sofas and even lower tables and finally, as presumably the other changes weren't quite damaging enough, they've installed fiercely bright lighting so you can now see who's sitting next to you.
Awful, truly awful. I don't blame the friendly bar staff, but rather the ignorant suits at the Spirit Group who obviously swooped down from on high and decided to turn this wonderful den into another McDonalds. Insipid and sterile, I'm off to the Fitz in future.

"But the dank, Moe, the dank!!!"

Cheapest pub in London as far as I can tell. Been there consistantly for 3 years. Staff very friendly. Have had to avoid the place once I realised I hadn't been anywhere else for months.

My favourite pub of all time. I just can't get enough of it.

Great for us Goths !

One of my favourites - can get a bit smoky though...

Cool pub with decent food. There are permanent offers on such as a pint of Carling for 1.50. Good music usually playing too.

Corner pub with pool table near Goodge St station (kinda behind it), even though it's so central it was less than 4 for 2 pints!
