I love this pub. I have a friend who lives in the village, and I only get to visit once in a while, but the the beer is always excellent, as is the food, and it's a classic rural pub. It's the sort of pub to move to the village for ...

Called in for a pint of excellent Butcombe beer yesterday and was pleasantly surprised it was under 3 at 2.90. Unfortunately we didn't have time to eat there but will return as the menu looked very appetising and competitively priced.

April 17th 2011 Sunday Lunch. Pints of perfect Butcombe Bitter 2-90. Roast Beef lunches a very reasonable 9-95 each. Roast Pork lunches 8-95. Plenty of veg included, carrots nicely al dente. Well presented and both with good meat. Childrens lunches (beef) 6-75. Childrens ice creams 2-50. Other sweets 4-75.
All very nicely presented in the new dining room. This is very hard to fault. Good price, good quality, well presented, nice suroundings-friendly staff. An unpretentious excellent value proposition. Can it be bettered locally? Doubtful.
Why pay more? Keep this up.

This is a classic, hard to find, small country pub. The beer is always excellent, they understand a critical audience. A lot of real ale drinkers come here. It has a great atmopsphere and yes, most people here do know each other but do not let that put you off. The food is good basic pub offering with, if anything, portions too large. Gated garden is child friendly with boules court.
Pub is NOT as good as when Jon Jensen ran it, the range of beers then was exceptional. Butcombe policy since they took over has sadly been to restrict guest ales although London Pride is always on and because a lot of regulars drink it, is likely to be in good condition. Other guest ales recently (save Tribute & Bass) have been poor. Very difficult to see why anyone would try to sell them here to this critical audience.
Sadly Cheddar Valley cider which used to be very popular, seems to have gone, no doubt because Butcome are keen to sell their own "Ashton Press". Sadly some pub owners never learn and Butcombe Brewery seems to be among them. The bigger it gets the more it acts like a typical pubco.
Butcombe Bitter, time of writing 2-70

A tucked away Butcombe pub thats a little tricky to find if youre not familiar with the area. Worth checking out though, and it is only a short drive from the A37. A spectacular setting with great scenery from the front of the pub, and a few outside benches.
Inside its a traditional country pub, with a tiled bar area, and more of a carpeted lounge area off to the right with a large fireplace, although its all one fairly small room. Theres a separate room described as a snug, although all the tables in here appeared to be laid up for eating. This seems very much a locals pub, perhaps unsurprising given its remote location, and I got the impression we were the only people in there who didnt know everyone else. Not that it was unfriendly or anything, that was just the feeling I got. It was also quite busy for a midweek evening which is good to see.
There was a decent food offering with a good choice from a pub grub menu, plus a few slightly more adventurous dishes and a small specials board. My Persian chicken curry was a decent dish and good value. Waitresses and barmaids were friendly and pleasant, although the landlord could have been a bit friendlier. A smile would have been a good start.
Beers on tap were Butcombe, Butcombe Blond and London Pride. Ciders were Cheddar Valley, Ashton Press and Ashton Still which Ive not come across before.

Well as promised made a return visit, 4 of us this time,a scorcher of a day.The same cordial welcome, and nice to see a Range of Salads on the menu/specials board.I opted for the dry white wine, the others the preverbial Shandy hot day wasn't it. 3 Salads and a Quiche later, thumbs up all round again. The Devonshire Ham was a dream..By 1300hrs the place was filling up inside and out, and easy to see why.Always worth the effort to get there, well done...

Not quite as good as in the old days pre Butcombe ownership when Johnny was the landlord but still rather good none the less. Seems a bit more food orientated these days with every table taken by diners even on a Monday evening. Usual Butcombe range of beers on tap with the Butcombe Gold and guest ale in Fullers London Pride that we tried in tip-top condition. Also Thatchers Cheddar Valley on draught for the real cider drinkers. It's a great summer pub with lovely relaxed outside seated areas upon the entrance to the pub and creates a very nice sun trap on balmy days should we ever see a summer this year. Good pub, great range of real ales + cider and well worth a visit for those looking for a great country pub just a little of the beaten track. 9/10.
