Joule's pub with a number of different rooms and seating areas including a courtyard at the rear. Ales were Blonde, Pale & Slumbering Monk. There were no guests that I could see and no real cider. But the Slumbering Monk was ok.

Fantastic pub, well refurbed (although the loos could be more, er, convenient). Good beer, friendly staff, bonus mark for the customer who couldn't understand why it was so busy. Because it was the Saturday afternoon before Christmas, maybe?

A very high quality refurbishment has turned the Rose and Crown into a superb pub. Joules three beers are all excellent, the atmosphere in the pub is fantastic, great landlord and staff. Hard to fault a place like this, Joules have got it just right. The bar snacks go well, from a local supplier and they do some great sandwiches! Another pint of Pale please!

We went in on Sunday afternoon and were pleasantly surprised - really nicely refurbed, excellent beers and helpful and speedy service plus a very good live band and a great atmosphere - an excellent way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
We'll definitely be back!!

Prety quiet at lunchtime yesterday. 3 Joules beers available from �2.70 in good quality. Basic pub food menu looked reasonably priced.

Agree with pocketcup nice set up wooden floors and a nice fire going on what was a very chilly day last Saturday.
Two sides with the small bar in the middle with 3 hand pumps on each side.
All thee beer are from the Joules Brewery who must own or lease the pub.
I tried the Pale Ale first (�2.70 a pint) missed the Blonde but then tried the very nice Slumbering Monk @�2.80 and would have had another but didn't have the time.
Bar staff both male and female were smart and friendly.
Highly recomended for a visit

I've been in three times since the refurb and it has greatly improved. Although very wooden the interior looks good and I prefer the new layout, despite having to go outside and up some stairs to reach the new toilet.
I've had a few pints of each of the three Joules ales that were on and all were very nice. Good to have another decent pub in the town centre and I will continue to go drink there.

This has been refurbished to become a typical Joules house. By the theatre, it is in a long terrace, that appears to be 19th century, but is probably much older. The first unusual feature you notice is that there is no door by the windows ! Instead it is to the right and inset about 10 feet or so � and a big heavy door it is too.
When you get inside the first impressionn is very much of wood and glass. There are two drinking areas, one at the front of the pub, and another further back behind the bar. The far wall of the front room is covered in mirrors - it took me some time to realise the pub wasn�t a lot bigger than it was ! One of the mirros (obviously recently installed) proclaims it ot be the �Smoke Room� � I very much doubt it these days ! Everything else appears to be made of wood � tables, chairs, floor, walls � you name it.
Being a Joules pub, they only serve their own three beers � but Slumbering Monk is an excellent pint, so who�s bothered ? I think they do do food, but there didn�t seem to be any mention of it anywhere.
Major let-down feature for me was the barman, who has to be the scruffiest dressed one I have ever seen !
6/10 � barman needs to buy shirt and trousers without holes in them !

Not a nice pub - I've felt a slightly intimidating atmosphere on both occasions I've been in and I think it would be fair to say that the locals are a rum bunch. No real ale as far as I could see, but it does have a dartboard which is to be commended. The burgers / hotdogs being rustled up from a "kitchen" out the back looked sub-football ground standard, I'm afraid.

"There is a tavern in the town, and it's called the Rose and Crown"....used to play against these at pool when I lived in Stafford years ago, jeez, what a joke, you had to open the french windows to break (no space to swing a cat)!!
