Went to the maltshovel with the kids after trying another pub which was too busy. The kids were given a picture to colour and was entered into a competition to win a free kids meal. The meal that we had was lovely and the service was very friendly. I would highly recommend!

This pub really lets its self down with its food. After travelling up by tram and then walking for half an hour with three hungry adults and one very hungry child we got to the Malt Shovel to find yes it's open, yes kids are welcome and yes there is food but if your vegetarian you can foget eating here. They don't do vegetarian options on a sunday! Of course i fogot that being a vegetarian we don't eat out on sundays as it's against our religion! For a pub that claims to be a food pub it seems that they are stuck in the dark ages and need to pull there head out of the carverys backside. We didn't stay for a drink because ignorance does not get my money. This pub needs to get itself sorted. Very Poor.

Had a very nice meal here recently, cooked as I'd asked and the service was really excellent. It was a shame that the hand-pull beer was off on that occasion but I've had a decent pint here in the past.

Has onesexylady actually BEEN to the 'shovel recently? One visit does not entitle anyone to write such a damning review, regardless of how far up their own bum their head is.
I am a regular & quite honestly, yes there have been times when the pub was a little sub-standard. But if onesexylady would have bothered to enquire WHY these standards were there, she would have found out it WASN'T the new management's fault, but the outgoing lease owners who were being downright spiteful and unprofessional. The management actually worked their arses off trying to keep the place open!
Standards had not fallen as badly as onesexylady claims & I believe she was on some sort of prescription medication when she visited/wrote the review.
onesexylady - go there now & show how nice you are by reviewing the place properly. But judging by your review of The Bowman, you seem pretty reluctant to actually enjoy yourself, so get a life first.

just read one of the comments and what i find strange is that onesexylady (not) seems 2 have gone to 2 pubs in hucknall and has bad thing to say about them, I would say that if this is the case then she should stay home or go into nottingham, also the maltshovel was only taken over on 22 november 2005, the maltshovel needs work but i think that is about to happen, i have never found it dirty and the meals are very nice and you get more than your moneys worth. the staff are helpful and frendly. the landlady is so helpfull and will do what ever she can for most. A bit old looking but a nice change from city pub. can only get better.

I am the chef in the maltshovel & would like to respond to the pathetic review written by onesexylady! Not only have we not served chicken & chips for close to a year now, but we most certainly never served an egg with it!In response to gravy you should have communicated with the member of staff which served you to request no gravy! As for my attitude.. i do not get to see or speak to customers, as the kitchen is in the back of the pub. Also if you didnt complain, how do you no i had a bad attitude?? At the maltshovel we have many valued customers who are regular & new who are satisfied with their visit.

Gone downhill massively since being taken over by new management. Very dirty, dusty and grubby everywhere with sticky deep dirt ingrained tabletops. I felt very unpleasant and didnt enjoy the meal at all. Everywhere felt very unhygienic. We ordered chicken and chips with egg and salad. They put gravy on the chips without even asking! Never had salad and egg with gravy! The meal was appalling. There was a really bad smell of cigarettes that enveloped the whole place even in non-smoking. It just was deep in the upholstery and walls and everywhere because the place is never cleaned properly. No toilet roll in the toilets, we had to go to the bar and ask and they just gave us a few sheets, which was pretty degrading. In particular the female chef was very unpleasant and had a really bad attitude. We didn't even complain about the gravy but with her attitude I don't think she'd have cared a damn anyway, got the impression no-one did. Will not be going there again unless they change management

Very large family-type pub built to serve the adjacent council estate and mining community. Lots of potential, large car park.
