user reviews of the Globe Inn, Linslade

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A great location on a particularly toothsome stretch of the Grand Union canal, this place serves food that is less impressive than the upstream Grand Union at Three Locks but at least avoids that establishment's tendency to overdo the muzak. Still, it's what was presumably once a traditional pub now gutted inside for the sake of (admittedly pleasant) colour schemes dictated by focus groups. Greene King ales offer the punter scant choice.

Greene king pub with no guest ales any more all there pump clips have other brewery names on them but Greene king bought them and now brew them in there own brewery.
Great location on canal food average, staff friendly.

This is an old pub in an idyllic setting alongside the canal, and has apparently been licensed premises since 1830 according to a short history of the pub chalked up on a blackboard. Unlike many pubs whose gardens run down to the water, this fronts on to the canal with just a narrow road separating the two. The "road" incidentally is the access to the pub - try and squeeze past another car and you'll end up in the water!

It's an attractive looking thatched building, and once inside the traditional look continues in the front bar with an old flagstone floor, plenty of black beams on the ceiling and wooden supports, an old leather sofa and various old black and white photographs dotted around. Beyond this though, it loses some of it's old charm. It's obviously had a refurbishment at some point, and with it's maroon paintwork, pastel wallpaper and contemporary artwork it reminds me more of a Premier Inn than an old canal side tavern. That's not to say there's anything wrong with it, it's all pleasant enough. It just doesn't have quite the character that it might.

Beyond the aforementioned main bar at the front, the pub extends a good deal further on with a mixture of small snugs and a large, open restaurant at the rear, although the only view from here is of the car park. Flooring elsewhere is a mixture of carpet and modern laminate and there were plenty of old oil lamps around with church candles burning away inside. Staff all seemed friendly enough, although I'm always slightly suspicious of pubs which have a selection of sponges available on the bar.

Besides the sponges, the food menu was extensive and was split in to sections such as sharing platters, steaks, classics, burgers and salads. There was also a chalkboard menu with a few specials on it. Most of the mains were around the 8/9 mark, and whilst this obviously isn't out of the way, I found it perhaps a little expensive for what I got. My Chicken Tikka Masala was pleasant enough, but didn't strike me as being significantly better than something I could have got elsewhere for half the price. I guess you're paying a premium for the location. That said, I was intrigued by the desert option of Sticky Toffee Pudding Cheesecake since it combined two of my favourite puddings in to one dish, and I wasn't disappointed!

Beers on tap were predominantly from Greene King with their IPA, Abbott Ale, Old Golden Hen and Hardy's and Hanson's Olde Trip. The only other beer option was their own Landlord's Choice. The solitary cider was Aspall's Suffolk.

Went to Linslade this weekend, specifically for my sister's Golden Wedding Anniversary, but as the trip was something of a "Down Memory Lane" visit, we decided to visit the Globe for a meal on the Friday night.

Needless to say, everything in the area had changed so much. Gone was the old dirt track leading down to the canal and the pub, the quay well renovated with plenty of mooring facilities and a decent size car park. It is nearly 50 years since I last visited the place, so what did I expect?

On arrival the first impression what very heartening. The car park was about 60% full. Always a good sign. I had booked a table for 6 and on approaching the bar to order the first round of drinks, I was asked if I had booked a table and when I relied that I had and gave my name I was immediately informed that the table was ready. We left our drinks order at the bar and these were brought to the table very promptly. So far, all very impressive.

Since my last visit to the Globe, much of the old living quarters behind the bar area had been opened up to create a fairly large restaurant area. One criticism is the space between some of the tables. It would be awkward, if not annoying, to both the guests at one's own table and those occupying an adjacent table to leave for the toilets or 'a quick fag'.

The waiter was very friendly and welcoming and presented each one of us with a menu and placed a small menu board on the table with list a list of additional items. When the food arrived, without much delay, it was hot, well presented, and delicious. Four of us, of the six present, all love cooking, and although we are not "chef's de cuisine", we are by nature, very selective and critical. We could not fault the dishes served up of this occasion.

Both the wine and ales were chilled to perfection. The pub was hosting two guest ales, and these apparently, are changed on a regular basis. There are sometimes more than two guest ales but never less than two. Our selection of food consisted of Soup of the Day (parsnip), Mushroom with Garlic, Prawn Salad for the starters, and Gammon, Chicken and Roasted Mushroom Pie, Rump Steak, and Mushroom Rigatoni Paste for the main courses. The bill averaged out at 16 per head. For the first class hospitality, and excellent food, I considered this to be a very reasonable price.

We did learn that the previous chef was replaced by the present incumbent as the reputation of the pub, and it's business, hit rock bottom. This could account for some the rather negative reviews posted earlier. We're just thankful that my sister's wedding anniversary wasn't five years ago!

I would heartily recommend with venue with it's present staff, location, and although limited but well balanced menu, to anyone.

Pleasant enough, but pricey. Loos could be freshened up.

Four of us went to this pub for my birthday celebration, I had booked a table. As soon as we arrived somebody came to greet us, we were then shown to our table. We were then offered drinks, when they arrived a very helpful waiter came and gave us menus and showed us the other selections on the board. The service was very good, much jovial banter between us and the staff. There was a good choice of food. The lasagne I had was lovely, the steak was big and tender. The cod and chips went down very well, also the gammon steak with fried egg. The puds were well received, I had the cheese board with onion chutney, it was absolutely delicious.
Would we go again? most definitely, I would hightly recomend it.

Nice pub, nice location, friendly staff, at least on the days we go, not sure what the other reviewers mean. Pretty good selection of beers too, food's fairly nice. Only criticism is the toilets are up some narrow, steep stairs.

Poor service continues.... 4 of us went for a mid week evening meal in September & were kept waiting an unreasonably long time for drinks. We ordered a bottle of wine for our main course, and half way through eating it we could still see it sitting behind the bar waiting to be brought to our table, so we gave up & got it ourselves. The waitress seemed more interested in chatting and looking good than serving customers. During the summer, at weekends, eating outside is very pleasant and they seem to get the service right. If only they could do so all year round.

I find it difficult to believe that the reviews of the pub I've just read is the same pub that I have visited a number of times over the last year. I have always found the staff friendly and polite. The food good value for money and always cooked well. Sometimes there have been delays at the bar due to the large number of customers - the cost of being popular.

Once again I chose this pub/restaurant to celebrate my birthday with 7 members of my family. I was a truly memorable day...the weather was fantastic for mid-April,my daughter arrived from North Yorkshire and we were all in a happy mood until.....until we entered this place.
What on earth is going on in this establishment?Don't they want,or need, customers?
We received a very frosty reception at the bar and an apathetic response for a table to seat 8. The first course was very basic, the main courses generally overcooked and dry with the desserts being mostly pre-packed fare. What a terrible shame...this could be so good - lovely setting, lovely old building, a barmaid with lovely long black hair and the most beautiful eyes but....not one member of staff willing to be customer oriented.
I will not be going back again!

My (young) teenage sons took me to The Globe Inn, Linslade for a surpirse Mother's Day lunch in March 2009. The total bill was in excess of 90 for 4 of us, and I can honestly say, choosing the Sunday roast from an extremely limited themed menu (just 4 choices) was most definitely a mistake...I had better roast dinners at school in the 1970's...and they were BAD!!! Undercooked, unpeeled roughly chopped carrots, 2 measely undercooked roast potatoes, gristley, fatty & tasteless wafer thin lamb, served with aneamic looking & tasteless stuffing...IT WAS FOUL!! Probably because of the occasion and the pleasant weather, the pub was very busy, but access through the bar to the dining area was crowded out by bikers and difficult to negotiate. The number of waiting staff was high, and we didn't seem to be served with courses or drinks by the same member of staff twice...with the exception of 2, they were brusque and unfriendly. When paying the bill, we declined to add a tip, which caused the barmaid/waitress to pass a less than kind comment, and not one word of thanks for our custom from her or her colleagues as we left. THIS PUB (AND THAT'S ALL IT IS!) IS TRYING DESPERATELY TO BE SOMETHING IT IS NOT.

Lovely pub in delightful canalside setting with excellent moorings for visiting boaties. Pleasantly busy with good food and ale. Nice staff except for one blonde who should find alternative employment (I suspect she might be a parking warden doing a bit of moonlighting). She shot through about 1830 so it didn't spoil our evening. Yes, we will be back.

Good food and excellent location. Could be a really good pub, but the staff and service lets it down - too slow and with attitude.

Went in here for lunch today with my family of six and re-arranged ONE seat to accomodate us all round the table. I was immediately pounced upon by a jobsworth employee telling me very abruptly that by moving the said chair I was contravening the Health & Safety act.
Naturally we all left straight away for fear of the H&S police arriving.
Total loss to pub approx 110.
Ended up having a damn good ruby in Leighton Buzzard.

Great location and handy when out on Canal walks around Leighton Buzzard. Have found food and drink in this pub is very expensive - especially compared to Three Locks just down the canal.

This pub has been better but is still fairly well run.Its recently been refurbished which gives the appearance of more space but the area around the bar is still difficult to navigate when busy.Had my 50th birthday dinner here;the service was efficient and quite friendly but the food was a little dry and overcooked with heavy sauces. Only the young bar staff need to improve now - they could do with a course in Customer services.

We had lunch here recently and were really pleased with the food. Beer is OK, service is reasonable, and the location is great.

How I look back to the late 90s and the era of Clive and Trisha. They turned this place from a dump into a palace, with excellent food, drink, atmosphere and service. And they made the canal frontage into a riot of colour with flowers in spring and summer. They had a mad goose called Cantona who would attack passing cars.It was second to none, the best pub for miles, including Leighton, Dunstable and MK. I drank there every night for over two years.

Then Clive got bored - there was nothing more he could do with the place, it wasn't a challenge. He started getting a bit "funny", short-tempered with customers, a screaming fit with a couple. He was rude to me - I didn't return. Whether the pub was taken over or whether he just quit I don't know, but leave he did.

And downhill it's gone. I came back once - mediocre service, expensive dull beer, and all the old charged good time atmosphere have vanished.

o tempora! o mores!

Great location, great building, good range of beers (if available). Spoilt by poor quality, overpriced food and staff service that ranges from indifferent to downright rude. Unlikely to return.

Really shocked they're advertising "cream teas". Went there last month especially for a cream tea. Was told by very uniterested staff that they don't do that there. When I pointed to a large poster which said they did, they shrugged their shoulders and said that's the first they'd heard of it! Was very disappointed as had brought guests from abroad specially to check it out.

Good one for the sunday hangover; having a roast dinner and some fresh air along the canal. 10 for the roast though.

Beer very good, food OK but a little pricey. Sunday roast a rip off. Often busy if the weather is good

I took my girlfriends family here for her mothers birthday and the food was terrible to be honest - I've never written on a site like this but feel compelled to do so. The fish and chips had been out on the side for ages and were overcooked, I had oriental vegetables and it was dripping in grease. I can quite honestly say that this was the worst meal I can remember having in a few years - made all worse as we went there for a special occasion.

They were busy when we went but the bar staff were rude to boot. Would recommend going elsewhere for food - I won't be returning...

Went there a few weeks ago on a sunday, still a pleasant place to have a drink, nice comfortable surroundings, cant wait for the summer to come
will_iner - 7 Apr 2005 09:36
This is a nice family pub, particularly great place to go in the summer and sit by the canal, and enjoy a few jars. The bar food is good as well!
cannon1882 - 27 Feb 2005 14:08
An attractive canalside pub with good selection of beers (if they're all available) and good wines. There is a large restaurant area with average food at higher than average prices. Great for children with a large play area. Plenty of tables alongside the canal from which to enjoy the pub's spectacular floral display of hanging baskets during the summer. The staff is young and service is a bit slapdash, but overall it's a good place for a leisurely weekend drink.
