please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visited for the first time a couple of weeks ago. The pub itself is absolutely typical of the Vale of York - pleasant enough but not particularly imaginitive in its decor and lay-out. You could say "traditional" - but not outstandingly atmospheric like the nearby Ferry. We were faced with a choice between a slightly down-at-heel bar and a somewhat "twee but anodyne" restaurant area with the inevitable plastic conservatory. The food, however, was excellent and the service friendly and prompt.

I believe this place was only brought back into service as a pub in the 80s, after decades as a private house, and I was hoping that some conservational sensitivity had been employed in the restoration of what must have been a multiplicity of separate rooms: instead, it does rather feel like 70s knock-through.
Even so, we enjoyed our lunch and will probably go back.

I had a wonderful christmas lunch with my family - it was the first time we'd all been together for some years so I wanted it to be special!

Right from when we arrived we received a fabulous welcome. The food was wonderful and even though the restatuant was full the staff managed to serve everyone with a smile and no one had to wait for drinks or their food.

We even found one family who had been going there for the past 4 years and wanted to book in again for christmas 2010 - I can't say I blame them. I'll be doing the same.
The food, the staff and the whole pub are fantastic. WELL DONE CASTLE INN.

Booked in for Sunday Lunch at this pub with a party of 8 including my mother, wife and children as we had used it around 7 months ago and everything was grand.

What a change,
When walking in the front entrance what looked like the local hooligans (though they all looked to be around 30-40) were congregated at the front door, the language being used was appalling and the frosty looks we got suggested they didnt like moving aside to let us in. Once inside it was no better, the language being used in full earshot of the bar staff was again appalling the f' and c' words coming in every sentence. We left without staying for lunch and went to find another eating place.

Never again !!!

Found this pub by chance after looking for a different pub in the village! Very nice food and friendly family service...there was a christening party going on when we were there but the staff balanced the party with the other diners well. Would recommend the sunday lunches! Good gravy! Village is really pretty too and nice to wander round.

Visited mid week lunchtime. Good selection of beers - well kept. Menu quite extensive and a specials board with some interesting options. Good service and decent prices. A good local pub that has room for visitors and locals.

Excellent food, quiet country pub, ideal for a meal with a friend. Nice guest beer too!
