Continuing our stroll along St Albans Road, we reached the Prince George, which now bills itself as a Smokehouse. Seemingly geared more towards food than drink, we were greeted by the small pub dog. Staff were fairly friendly. But, there was only one solitary real ale - Fuller's Swing Low. Although, Tring Side Pocket For A Toad was being pulled through. Ok, but nothing special.

Still the Prince George but changed hands again. A visit will have you thinking of Queens as well as princes!
Newly refurbed and very welcoming. 2 handpumps (only one dispensing on last visit). Wells Bombardier "Burning Gold". Also Moretti, Symonds cider and the usual fizzy things.
Food very good, way beyond normal for Watford. Had a burger which at £9 was good enough value. Child's meal was £6 for nice Mac' cheese.
Good to have a pub that's making an effort to welcome all-comers- very unusual in Watford.

New owners and refurbished inside. Still called the Prince George. Cellermanship far better than under the previous management.
|
Now known as the Prince George. Used to have a pretty dodgy rep' and no real beer.
Now they seem to be making an effort, with a varied menu of ales, kept a bit too cold in my opinion.
Friendly staff, pool table, rooms are named after previous incarnations of this building.

Finally got around to visiting, having wandered by many times. Had a pint of one of the two patriotically named ales - St George and the Dragon, from Wadworth. £3 a pint and not brilliantly kept. Clips for Doombar and London Pride both facing the wrong way. Large boozer with only six others in (including the barmaid) on a Wednesday night. And the signs to the garden still referred to the Sycamore. Obviously trying, with plenty of offers on food, but wouldn't entice me back.

Has changed its name to the Prince George. Advertises cask ale - will have to see if it's a more interesting and better kept selection than its predecessor.
|
Now the sycamore under newish management. Last did Abbots and Greene King IPA though didn't feel well kept. Still feels like a very 'locals' pub. Went once and won't go again unless real overhaul. Has pool table and seems to have alot of events on.
|
Now open again, and seems to be called The Sycamore.
Will have to see if rumours of any real ale are true...
|
Now closed and boarded up. Unlikely to reopen due to past issues with loud music.
|
I also noticed the list of 4-5 real ales on the blackboard outside and have been in a few times to check them out. There does only seem to be two hand pumps and most of the time they only have one beer on, its usually in good nick though. Service can be a bit indifferent and Ive walked out before after being ignored by chatting bar staff.

According to the blackboard outside, Champions now appears to be serving a selection of real ales which is a very good thing in my opinion. Haven't been in to check it out, has anyone else?

Good pub with everything included. Sky, pool, smoking area and nice customers. Not your usual watford dregs of society. Young and enthusiastic staff. Would love to have this a my local.

When I first knew this pub it had the magnificent name of The Leviathan with an impressive pub sign to match. It then got sold to some philistines who took down the signage, replaced it with a tacky banner and renamed it Champions. Clearly they had no idea how to run a pub and it went down hill quickly. A new guvnor arrived called John who instilled a bit of discipline, and a lot of professionalism, adding a couple of hand pumps along the way. He has now left but the pub continues to flourish, serves a decent pint and is a good place to watch sports or have a game of pool.

Ok Pub.Guinness was ok The DJ's were superbon Saturday,a good mix of Ska Punk and Northern Soul.
Downside is it's got an Arsenal shirt on the wall.
|
Nice atmos - live music at weekends. DONUT playing live there March - check out the details with landlord, yes its my duo and I am biased but we are ruddy good.
|
Good pub to watch the football or play pool, a bit expensive compared to some pubs out of town but better than most pubs in the area.

Champions is a sports pub opposite homebase on St Albans road. It has 2 pool tables and a dart board. It shows all football matches and other sports as well on request.
