A recent lunchtime visit was cut short when, as I waited at the bar to order drinks, my pal went into the back room to bag a table only to be told "You can't sit in there all tables are reserved" despite only one couple being in the room and no 'reserved' label being on any table. Not being prepared for such an unfriendly reception we looked the bloke up and down and left.

To my knowledge this is the only Hydes pub on Wirral. Food was good but pricey, views excellent but ale was uninspiring. Of the two ales that seemed to be available I had a golden brew called Piffle or Pyffle. It was bland.

Seems to be a popular place for diners but there are plenty of nooks and crannies for drinkers and a sunny patio (at least it was on Saturday lunchtime) overlooking the Dee estuary. I had a pint of Balderdash for £3.25 which is brewed by Conwy Brewery for Woodward & Falconer pubs - it kept its condition down the glass and was pretty decent, I found it slightly thin but this is probably the brew itself. Also on offer were Piffle at £3.15 (another one brewed by Conwy), Monty's MPA and their seasonal Maple and two from Woodlands Brewing Company in Nantwich (Oak Beauty and Old Faithful). Solitary cider was Strongbow. Service was slightly offhand but nothing to worry about and I think the current score of just over 4 is too low for this pub.

Underwhelmed by a selection of 3 beers yesterday evening. One had to be sent back. If only the beer was as good as the staff

Had a beer from Holdens plus Taylor's Landlord. Quality was reasonable. Pub was comfortable if a little quiet. Price at 2.95 a jar was well OTT.

Known more for its' food rather than beer but a good beer selection including real ales. Nice views over the Dee estuary. Pleasant to sit outside on a summers evening.

OK place, Ales were Wychwood Witchcraft, TT Landlord, Black Sheep, Old Speckled Hen and Tetley Cask.

Lovely location, attentive staff, but could be so much better, just misses that 'something special'Food prices on the high side for what it is. Again, content fine, actual product way off the mark. Courses with gravy so powerful and tasting of Marmite that overpowers all other tastes.Sauces that taste as if they have come out of a jar. Black pudding so dry it was flakey, fish overcooked by that extra minute.Great shame.

Went for Sunday lunch with the family and really didn't like the overpoweringly strong gravy that the whole meal was swimming in - when we complained the manager simply said he was sorry we didn't like it !!! At nearly 9 per head we won't be going again.

Good pub, nice views over to Wales from the gardens at rear. Staff pleasant and attentive.

just a nice country yuppie pub.

Good building/atmosphere, not bad pub quiz. Commercial beer, average food. Bit pricey for what you get.
