user reviews of Klasterni Pivovar Strahov, Prague

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I visited there again back in June, Budvar was off, but the home-brewed beers are still as good as ever. If Lee has confused you, just find Strahov Monastery on a map, and it is right by it. A must-visit pub in Prague for beer hunters.

Oh dear! Lee. You're really confusing me now. I don't know where I'm drinking any more.
Admin please delete Lee's post before a second person reads it. Their whole stay in Prague could depend on it!

Visited the brewpub on 12th and 14th July 2010. Was very impressed by the greater beer range. The IPA could only be described as nectar, full of rich hoppiness; the standard amber and dark tmavy ale were as good as I remembered them from 2004 if not better. There was also a wheatbeer, albeit on the sweet side.

Food was excellent on both visits, staff conversant in English, and of course the location is idyllic.

The best way to reach here is to get the No 22 tram to Pohorelec and walk up the steps through a doorway in the high wall. At the top of the steps turn right and walk past VELKA Klasterni Restaurace. Do not confuse the two. Velka is often full of tourists and shows sports on TV, and only has two beers. The photos above should help you find this pub.

And you'll be glad you went.

Legend of a place. Went last July, great place, great beer, great food. You can also partake a 'beer to go' on the way back to town, great stuff.

Visited on 11 July during stay in the city. Full of German football supporters watching Germany v Uruguay, but none the worse for that. Two homebrewed beers, a wheatbeer and a dark "Tmavy" are worth trying out, and the food menu is more extensive (can be spelt with a T or a P) than on my last visit in 2004, but with beer still a third cheaper than UK prices who's complaining. As with most Prague pubs there is an English version of the menu. For starters try out their chicken soup in a hollowed out loaf of rye bread. I have to say the place wasn't full of UK/US tourists on this session

The best way to reach here is to get the No 22 tram to Pohorelec and walk up the steps through a doorway in the high wall.

Staff were helpful and conversant in English, with none of the begrudged attitude so often mentioned in guidebooks!

I am glad I visited a second time, and would recommend it to anyone for a pint after touring the castle, and for its monastic setting as other reviewers have picked up on. But remember it is no longer as cheap as it once was.

Superb home brewed St Norbert dark and amber beers served in beautiful surroundings. Brews are pricey by Prague standards (about 2) but unique and well worth it. Must do venue for serious beerhunters.

Great pub, great location. Head up the vernicular, walk through the park, and it's a great stop before getting to the castle. Loved the two home-brew beers, strong, very tasty, and slightly pricy by Prague standards. Budvar is available if you fancy a more mainstream beer. Staff were very helpful, service was excellent. I did not try the food.

Visited here last mone (june 2008) and found it very pleasant, there were 3 beers on the amber, dark and the seasonal which was a delicious wheat beer.
Prices are a little higher than some places but it is well worth a visit, the food is good and reasonably priced, a lovely setting in the shadow of the monastery.
the staff are very freindly and the head brewer very chatty too.
One trip you must put on the itinerary.
Warning I would advise getting there early as it does get very busy.

Visited here last weekend, having been once previously some years ago.

The brewery's own dark lager is hands down the best I have tasted of that style - wonderful. The amber was great too. It is however expensive at 59Kc (about 1.50) for 40cl, more than double the cost of a half litre in a non-touristy pub in central Prague.

Food looks excellent though we didn't eat here. Plenty of seating outside in a pleasant courtyard opposite the entrance to the Strahov Monastery itself, interior is OK too.

Lovely place. The dark beer was gorgeous. A beautiful location and not totally overrun when I was last there a year ago. The food was good as well - not very traditional cuisine but to be honest that's a good thing...

Will be just about my first port of call on next visit to Prague.

Lovely peaceful atmosphere in the immediate vicinity of the monastery, parts of which are a museum and may be visited. Excellent dunkel/Schwarzbier, their golden Easter Special was not bad either. Decent food. We came back the day after for more!

An excellent brewpub in the grounds of the Strahov Abbey which is difficult to find but definitely worth the effort. We broke off from a tour of the castle to find it and after a long walk through the wind and rain, the sight of and aroma from the two large copper brewing tanks just inside the door made it all worthwhile. Recharged with coffee and brandy we set about the main event, the beer. Both the light and dark were excellent and brewed under the name Svaty (Saint) Norbert. Bottled take-outs are also available. There is a good menu and I was intrigued by the Sword of Charles IV, which turned out to be generous portions of different meats skewered onto an eighteen inch silver sword, excellent presentation.

As well as the copper brew tanks there is an impressive looking bar and the walls are adorned with old photos and posters giving a real sense of the building's history. The staff are friendly and all in all it's a great place to spend a few hours, we actually spent six hours there. Take my advice and go there. but get a cab!

An amazing brewpub based in a rambling monastery in the hills around Prague Castle.

There are two beers brewed here, a dark and a light, the former of which is exquisite. The staff are friendly and have a good sense of humour. After eating some amazing food in their restaurant I intended to stay for just one beer, that was shortly after 9, but I left at 11pm.

If you speak only a few words of Czech, a warm welcome awaits you. The brewpub is well worth a visit.
