So sad to hear about The Castle shutting down. I spent every weekend between 91 - 94 there. Happy days. Crispin was the best landlord ever! It is interesting to read the other reviews. I don't come to Brentwood much these days. About a year ago a friend and I popped into The Castle for a trip down memory lane only to find all memories had been erased...lump in throat!!!! The sweaty black leather clad nights, live music, Cripins roast potaoes, John Otway performing headbutt!Beat of the Beast....... Chumbawama!!!EEEK sweat pouring off the ceiling when a gig was in full swing! Dave Apps (moody in the corner) Andy, Jill, Adam, Cath, Adrian B, Adrian M, Scott and Scott, Matt, Julia all the older but very cool Bikers and Goths, Heaven just pure heaven.............I salute you all and thank you for making the early 90's the time of my life.

reference annonymous's comment
"Many customers moved on under the previous landlord who treated everyone as criminals!"
You obviously were not a regular drinker there, round late 90's early 00's the large proportion of clientel were criminals, or had borderline illegal habbits. so really its fair to treat everyone as such.
under the management of mick, this pub was spot on a top place on friday nite, good atmosphere if you were open enough to frequent with the customers, not a place for outsiders.
closing nite 2moz, will be there to say goodbye

bit of a dump. only used to go there as some mates knew people there. would have gone elsewhere otherwise. quite a 'grunge/alternative' people pub that is pretty dingy with pretty poor drinks. pool tables are the only real plus point. on a nice note i did steal a sign from there once. go me. erm yeh.

A good down to earth boozer & thankfully under new management. Many customers moved on under the previous landlord who treated everyone as criminals! Superb bar staff. Desperately in need of complete renovation of the gents toilets which are so bad they can make you wretch from the outside! Also in need of a barring some of the towns more notorious characters who make a habit of beating people up - effective (unintimidated) bouncers would be a good idea at weekends.

Hi Kiwi,& the Beast.I remember you. I'm not sure you can ever recreate the high points of the past and this pub in the 80s is a hard act to follow. I remember Saturday nights when the crowd was a tightly packed sea of black leather: bikers, punks and goths, with kick-ass rock & punk music at 200 decibels. The dilated pupils of Wardrobe, the self-mutilation of Dave Apps, the throbbing chaos of Beat of the Beast, the smell of petrol after someone (Jim?) rode their motorbike through the crowded pub. It was mad, bad and dangerous to know, especially thanks to landlord Crispin, who knew how to run a pub. Now it's just a saddo watering hole for watching sport on TV.

i used to drink in the castle between 89 - 92/3. it used to be a good place to go. i don't know if anyone i used to drink with still goes in there. i used to work in pizza hut. when i wasn't workin i was in the pub. i've not been back for a long time though.

Reading the other comments about this place I find it very hard to imagine the Castle with any atmosphere, let alone rocking. The beer is so bad in there you wouldn't give it to a dog in heat, and the "regs" have been the "regs" for the past three decades. One redeeming feature is the pool tables, but that hardly makes up for the lack of live music. If you like bad beer, screwball company, ugly chicks, and dull conversation get down the there.

Great place if you're not too fussy about the decor. A people's pub. The Castle was in its hey day in the early 70's when you could have a game of pool or darts and nip into the Chinese for a takeaway ( Veg Curry and Boiled Rice for 15p believe it or not) on the way back to work or home. Even today one of the best pubs in Brentwood.

Hi I was one of the guys that put the bands on in the Castle about 16 years ago . We had some great bands show up and had some great times in that pub. So I hope some one can do it again.Jim Beast

The Castle is just fine. The crappers ARE disgusting but so what? The Staff are pretty cool and Mick, the 'manager' is an alright chap. If you want a 'nice' pub then piss off down the road with all the other muppets. If, however, you want a loud, relaxed, do-what-you-want place, head for the Castle.

I used to drink at the Castle in the late 80's and boy did that place ROCK!! Shame to hear it sounds a bit dull and lifeless now :-(

I agree with Alaric, I go to the castle fairly regularly and I think that it would be great if it was made into a live music venue again, because there aren't very many about now, and it would bring in a lot more people. (The bar staff ARE nice and friendly to the customers by the way!)

Not for the trendy people. Play MTV2 or Kerrang which is good. Pints are cheap if you like drinking piss.

A once superb boozer & music venue now turned into a Mr Q's pool emporium. It has the most disgusting gents toilets & seating in the county & the landlord / brewery doesn't seem to give a damn about them or the customers. Check them out you won't disagree.

THe Castle was once a fantastic pub with live bands and music. I would love it to return to that but I have been told that you guys won't spend any money on it and I need to petition you. I am a comedy and music promoter in Brentwood of 8 years standing and if the relevant licenses were in place and the slight refurbishments done, you would easily clear an extra 50,000 a year profit as you could again have bands comedy and other events. It only needs an extra cubicle in the ladies and a functioning kitchen upstairs. It's a fantastic pub with a lot of loyal customers but it used to take 30 mins to get served on a Friday. Now I can order 30 drinks a minute. I don't of course! Please consider it. You also have a terrific landlord there, Mick Hebden, who is fully behind making the pub great again. Thanks for your time, please feel free to call me at home if you need to on 01277 222896
