Never been here on a Friday or Saturday night, but it's good for a cheap lunch. Friendly staff. Only problem would be the considerable distance to the gents and the flies buzzing around our table.

This place feels like 2 pubs.
At the front a fairly cozy boozer with big leather seats in the window. At the back, lots of seating in a light wood and brass style not to my taste.
This is the pub of choice for my after work brigade. However, come late Fridays it warps into a bizzarre disco type establishment at odds with it's external appearence.
Fine if you go early. Avoid in the evenings.

I think this is a great venue. Good food and great value

Lovely lunch today Recommend the lasagne

Very ordinary pub, very ordinary beer What I have found is that the food has been pretty good when ever I have been in.

I am not a regular in the pubs of Woolwich and sadly had not had the foresight to check BITE before popping into this place one to kill a few hours.
It was not that busy at the time I arrived, just a few people drinking on their own. The decor was pretty awful but not being a pub-snob or wine bar fan this did not bother me.
What did bother me was the service. It was almost as if I was intruding by going to this pub and offering my money in exchange for beer. The odd thing is that this chap was either a shift supervisor or manager as he was barking at some of the other people working there.
Why work in the service industry mate?

staff seemed lovely, good serice but attitude of management made for a horrible tense atmosphere, wont be going back again

The first glass of wine I had was stained with lipstick. Seemed to be a big trouble to change it. We left. Didn't order food. My b/f was fuming. Will stick to the Vanbrugh down the road.
The potential to be a great find. It's about service, not just the food and drink. Can't recommend it.

Awful pub. Cold food, dirty toilets, rude management.
The staff were lovely though, poor things.
|
Terrible place, smelled like a urinal and the beer was stale. I have no idea why the food has such glowing reviews, as from what I saw I wouldn't feed it to my dog. The manager was a complete moron as well who clearly had little respect for his customers and even less for his staff. Only redeeming feature was the friendly staff.
|
dull dull dull - nothing going for it at all
|
Nice staff, shame about the management
|
i'm amazed this place seems to get such glowing endorsments, a bit to glowing to be genuine if you ask me

Just got back from this great boozer. Food was fresh, hot and prompt which was good for a Friday evening. Beer was good (London Pride and Youngs Bitter)and well kept. Give this place a visit when you are next in Woolwich.

This pub is great it has just won Best Bar None in Woolwich which is a council and police run competion to see which pub has the highest customer care standards The decor comfortable, contempory Staff are friendly the food is great the prices not too bad If you're a greenwich card holder 10% discount
|
I see some one has had my review removed, this wont change the fact that this pub is a hole
|
while the pub is not bad the beer is nice and the staff friendly someone should remind the owner with the prices it charges the bar is in the centre of woolwich and not the centre of the west end

The Earl of Chatham is definately the best pub in Woolwich. Great beers and a new menu - first rate.

I had no idea there had been an unfortunately terminal incident at this establishment until I read the reviews here. We've only just started being locals here though, still new to the area, so my ignorance is partially excused perhaps? We like this place. And the fact that neither of us has been killed is a definite bonus. I hate football I do. Me, a strapping bloke of heterosexual ideals and practices. So why do I, a football-hating fellow, like a pub geared to cater for the football followers? If there's a match on, we can either avoid the place or sit in a corner giggling at the screams of despair or elation and still not feel like we're in the middle of a competitive maelstrom. Everything is well run with chaos quelled and friendly, relaxing environment maintained throughout. The beer is fine, the food is not at all bad and above all... it's pretty calm here. The times we've come in after work and it's been pretty peaceful and we've managed to bag the sofa. Even on Fridays! Lovely. The staff soon clock regular visitors and almost pour your usual before you're through the door, but even when we were new we still got a wave and a "Cheers!" as we left. Sometimes there might be a little customer spill over from the Great Harry, Wetherspoons, pub nearby but we can deal with that as long as we have our sofa.

Bands are now a fixed feature on Thursday and the brilliant Florenzo, who makes Hendrix' tunes his own, is a regular as well as Be Sharp and Purple who are a Bay City Rollers (LoL - not really, but guess which band) triubute.
Beer is Youngs and London Pride, both kept very well, and an extensive range of other stuff. Staff are all friendly and efficient. I've got used to scaling the stairs to use the toilets, but at weekends they have a chap/chapess who sells lollipops and smelly stuff when you want to wash your hands. Us blokes call ours 'the willie watcher'.
After 11, you can tell a first time customer by the plaintive wail of "HOW MUCH?????".

Early Saturday evening, came across the Earl of Chatham, looked harmless, apart from the flowers outside that seemed to symbolise something a little more sinister...decided to enter...well, having been man handled, prodded, poked with a bleeping stick, bag searched (including within the sleeves of my travel card always a good place to hide a machete dont you think?!) and virtually strip searched and bent over for an internal, we got into the Earl of Chatham unarmed!!! The 4 guys on the door (yes 4!!) thought we were safe to get in!!
Ahhh Woolwich a?!?!
Once inside all was well though, they need to lower the tone on security and make things a little more welcoming!! but all in all it was bearable!!! Woolwich is short of clean (and i mean that in both sense of the word!) pubs/bars, this one is probably as clean (on both fronts!) as you are going to get in this town...

Comments prior to April this year are out of date due to total refurb. Anyway Jorge, they have sorted out the door policy. Yes it kicks off occasionally but it is always swiftly dealt with and nobody else needs to get mixed up in it. Bar staff are lovely, most customers are nice and friendly. Food (available til 8)is excellent and reasonably priced.
Sunday bands are great- specially Be Sharp.
Downside? Bogs are up very steep tall staircase and the clocks in the tills are 3 minutes fast (important as prices go up 25% at the end of normal hours).
