Solid decent boozer serving up a very good Ram and Special. Decent friendly service. Nothing not to like.

Far and away the best pub in Penge, varied menu, with daily specials, beer is the "best kept" in south London. The staff are very welcoming and well presented, I would recommend this old fashioned, friendly pub to anyone looking for a good meal and excellent beer.

Ann going into hospital for 13 weeks from next Sunday. All old regulars get back till until the witch returns!
|
Dunno what the reviewer below is on about, Ann is fantastic and I hope she stays for many a long year. Good local pub tho I don't get there as much as I used to now.
|
When Ann finally leaves, the Maple will have many more customers, who have left because of her ignorant attitude. The pub is a ghost town because of her.

Posted on here a few years back re this pub, just another quick update.
The Maple's been done up a bit since then although it still manages to look like a boozer from decades ago!
Nevertheless it remains a great little pub and easily one of the best around this area. The Pride has gone and the only bitters on now are Youngs Ordinary and Best which have ranged from very good to a bit poor (mostly passable however).
The prices in the Maple remain very cheap compared to many pubs which is a bonus although luckily it doesn't attract the Wetherspoon type of clientelle. Most in the pub are locals and there's a real community feel there, the staff seem to know most by name.
Not sure about food, it's not that sort of pub really, although I believe they do a roast etc on a Sunday.
My one criticism is that the juke box can be quite loud at times. The speakers are fitted outside of the bar area and the staff can't hear how loud it is from behind the bar. Occassionaly they keep the music only on in the pool area which is a good compromise.
All in all I'd definitely recommend the Maple and certainly above any other candidates in the area. It's a good honest and old fashioned boozer where the friendly staff still wear a shirt/collar and live upstairs!

The Maple Tree is a great pub, The problem is, with so many pubs closing in Penge the maple is getting full of dross, gobshites and ex Mitre drug dealers.
This is spoiling the pub. It is not a boring pub. The beer is much better than the Golden Lion across the road.
|
A nice pub this one, although have to agree it is a bit boring! Certainly one the better pubs in Penge. Pride was very good.
|
It's plain boring - very littel done to entertain the clientele. They need music to liven up the place> Over the road at the Golden Lion (not nearly so nicely decorated) but they do offer music (mainly reggae) every night. DJ Toxic play there on Friday night & they are the best DJ's in the area.
The Maple Tree needs an injection of something!

This is a cracking little pub. Old fashioned and looks like it was last done up in the 1970s but is a real joy to go along there and have a few pints in. Well kept Pride and Youngs ordinary and good lagers on tap. Easy best in penge.

The best Value and quality food in any Pub in Penge. Fantastic!!!
|
Used to be one of my locals. Nice friendly atmosphere, occasional live music, decent well kept pint and quiz nights.
|
You could do much worse than this place in Penge (The Golden Lion over the road for example). Bitter was limited to the usual Young's / London Pride, but tasted pretty good. Decor appears to be unchanged since 1974 or thereabouts.
