Reasonably looking place, and it was nice and warm the winter night I was in. The bar area was fine, but it appeared only the public one as such was being used. Could do with some work on it, like starting with the music which was aimed for a group a lot younger than who use the place. Three real ales on and that included London pride, so naturally with this being deepest Hertfordshire I avoided. I had the Black Sheep winter dark ale, named after one of those reindeers without the shiny nose, and it was great. Had two it was so good, but £3.85 a pint was pushing it. Only food served it appears is at lunch time. Good loos.

First visit in a couple of years. Seven of the eight pumps on tap. Good range including Brentwood Peasants Revolt, Cottage Big Ben, Theakstons Old Peculiar, and Deuchars. Beer kept well but feet sticking to floor and had to wash hands after straightening table. Won't be coming back in foreseeable future.

Visited for a quick pint and found this place to be pleasant enough. there were three real ales on offer, I chose the Thwaites Wainwright but it wasn't quite up to it's normal high standard, the virtual lack of head possibly took the edge of it for me, and at 3.10 per pint, a little expensive, even in these times.
The pub itself was interesting with seperate rooms and what appeared to be friendly enough locals.
There was a live acoustic set in a room to the rear, but the 4 entry curtailed my interest as I was only stopping for one beer.
Would visit again, but it was more average to good, than exceptional.

The Half Moon is OK but it always smells of damp!

Been redecorated so no more lumps of plaster falling of the wall! Otherwise still the best pub in Stortford.

Great selection of real ale, with a rotation of guest ales, at a reasonable price - served by friendly, albeit cheeky, staff. Also the usual spirits and a selection of reasonable wines.
Now undergoing a most needed revamp under the new owners and lovely landlady. It should turn out to be a tasteful update to the establishments antique feel.
Quite a venue on the music scene, though I have never been to a gig there yet.
It has a choice of two bars and a small offshoot room to the rear of the upper bar. The lower bar has a number of tables and a rubber pig (it used to be a rubber chicken!) hanging from the ceiling to Oink for attention when staff are in the upper bar and beware the informal rule; you buy the staff a drink if you oink when they are there already!
Nice hidden garden at the rear and a nice courtyard space too.
Normally has a paper or two, which you can peruse if you have popped in on your own for a quick pint.
A very good place to meet for a friendly drink - Especially if like good ale.

Looks like its Rocked and Rolled for a while! ?

Potentially very good pub as the beer is good and staff helpful but in recent years has not been looked after and is starting to look positively grubby. I even went as far as ringing the owner "Passionate Pub Company" to comment who didn't seem that interested, (ironic name!)

Following a glass-throwing incident that allegedly led to a serious injury (recently reported on the front page of the "OBSERVER" local paper), beer is being served in plastic glasses on nights apparently deemed risky (i.e. when there is live music attractive to the young end of the drinking population).

Beer is always good quality though, which is something in this lager town.

It has been a while since I was here, its looking a little tired, which is a shame as there is a lot of potential in the building. It is shabby, well dirty is closer, which contradicts the owners website at the Passionate Pub Company we operate a number of quality public houses, certainly not true here, needs more than TLC and it looks like the last refurbishment was carried out by a troop of monkeys, pay proper tradesmen the next time guys!

The beer is okay but I dont like sticking to the floor when I walk across it.

hmm.. I quite like the missing plaster, etc! Not a pub for refined tastes, more a studenty, slightly alternative vibe. Ok beers, good music nights on week days (look at web site) and an alternative 'disco' every first saturday of the month, I think. I like it though wish they'd host more music at weekends

im with fugglehops on this one, tried the pub out last sat, what a dump, dirty un cleaned tables, plaster missing on the walls, no wine for the girls, no ice for shorts, toilets stunk. will never set foot inside again, even if the beer was free

From the outside this does look a rough pub, but dont judge a book by the cover. The interior is quite interesting once your up the steep steps. The bar area has a small woodburner and well worn bench seating, there is a seperate pannelled snug to the side and also a downstairs area with its own lower level serving area. The regular real ale is Deuchars IPA,Courage Directors,Bombadier and TT Landlord but the board listing the beers stated that there were 4 interesting sounding guests which would be coming soon.I really wish pubs wouldnt do this, when exactly are these ales due,"soon" could be anytime from here to eternity. This is also a stunt often pulled at Wetherspoons and only makes punters feel a bit dissatisfied with the ale actually available. My Deuchars IPA was in good nick ,however. The pub is very commited to evening entertainment and that is laudable.A more consistent guest beer policy would elicit higher ratings and a spruce up both inside and out is probably overdue. However one of the better pubs in Stortford,a town with a excess of poor boozers.

The reviews for this pub sounded promising so I thought I would give it a try. Standing outside I had to double check the sign that this was the Half Moon. It looked a right shit hole. I could not bring myself to touch the door handle yet alone venture inside and have a drink. If I have got it wrong then let me know. If I'm right - back me up.

Great pub, excellent beers, good service. Food delivered from local Indian and Chinese, brilliant. Great music nights, many bar areas. Sounds perfect, nearly. At times there is the smell of fresh sick, what is it?

New Lady incharge, Good selection of real ales, good service of the perfect pint, what more can a man ask for. Go on give it a try. Remember from London Liverpool Street, there is a "FAST?" Train every 30 minutes including Sundays, if National Distress pull there finger out.

Good beer guide listed pub towards the north of the town centre.

Several drinking areas along with a seperated room at the rear of the pub used for live music. Often very busy on music nights.

Food is available from a Chinese restaurant nearby, the bar staff will order food for you and you can eat it in the pub. Nice touch.

Hobgoblin, Deuchars regularly available plus a variety of guests. Old rosie cider available too.

First pub I ever got served a good - ahem - 20 years back. Hope it still serves Moonburgers.
fieldmarshall - 17 Aug 2007 23:35
Good pub for live music with all tastes catered for, from acoustic night to electric blues to african drumming.

Plenty of guest beers available, pleasant outside seating area and friendly atmosphere. Deuchars IPA, hobgoblin, fullers london pride seem to be available alongside the standard draught bitters and lagers.

Bar staff will order you a takeaway from a very commendable chinese restaurant to eat in the pub.

A comedy club has recently opened on fridays, and with music taking place basically every other day of the week, the pub often gets busy in the evening.

Prices are par for the course in Stortford.

One of the most vibrant pubs in the town, with a HUGE range of beers and live music.

If you don't mind a bit of character-building grime, this is a good bet for a weekend pint.

Spanish2 - 22 Dec 2006 18:36
Just about the best in town, the beers change on a daily basis (almost). Standard beers, Hobgoblin, London Pride and IPA, plus 4 guest ales and Old Rosie.

Can get busy as there is music most nights.

There is a lunchtime menu, I don't know whats on it as I only drink. Menus for the chinese are available from behind the bar.

Rockman - 17 Sep 2006 11:28
Previous review spot on - the best pub in town. Long standing entry in the GBG. Only drawback is no food, although they will order you a chinese takeaway from the place across the street.

A fantastic pub to go to. They have live music of every sort possible from folk to drum and bass. These are usually hel in the back room, which does have it's own l=mini-bar. The main bar serves guest beers and there is generally something there for everyone. Sometime they even put up a blackboard with the guest beers on it and yu can vote what ones you would like tobe around the next month. There is a little garden out the back, which is a little hidden away and a treck from the main bar. Plus, there is something called 'World of Cheese'. The food, not the music. Platters of cheese and bread etc. for munching. There is something for everyone here.
