You won't recognise this pub from the early comments. Ownership/management has changed in recent months and breathed life into this place. A very popular and subsequently busy pub so it is advisable to book if you want to eat. (Great Sunday roasts!) Staff plentiful, very accomodating and friendly. They will do their utmost to fit you in to eat if you haven't a booking. a selection of good local ales are on offer from a relatively small bar so you have to be a little patient when it comes to getting served. Generally a nice place with a pleasant atmosphere. Try it out.

New landlord has made a great difference to this pub. Now 4 real ales available. The standard range of Smith Cask, Black Sheep Bitter and Theakston Best but also one guest which was Rudgate Ruby Mild on last visit. Pity more local micros not on offer. Now open all day and letting rooms available. Travel to Redmire on the Wensleydale Railway, walk down to the pub, have lunch and catch the next train back.

I think this pub has new owners since a lot of previous comment. We turned up last Saturday evening as a party of 7 including and 8 year old and were made very welcome. Despite the pub being full, mainly with people eating, the landlady assured us she would find a table for us, which she did. We ran a tab from the start and enjoyed the Guinness and very good food, especially the fish and chips and the steak pie which was brill. Make a point of paying this pub a visit the owners deserve your support, but maybe book if your a large party and want to eat.

I find it hard to recognise the pub from the existing comments. We stayed in a cottage in the village and visited the pub on a couple of occasions, including Sunday lunch.
I found the landlord to be very friendly and helpful, the first time I went in I was on my own and we had a 15 minute chat about the surrounding area. If people found him unfriendly then I can only say that it takes 2 to strike up a relationship....
The Sunday lunch was possibly the best pub lunch I've ever had, and I've had quite a few! But don't expect an extensive menu, the mains are limited to roast beef, pork or lamb, coming in 3 sizes and all very reasonably priced. One of our party was vegetarian and upon request they were able to offer something suitable which was reported to be very good.
Excellent Black Sheep Beer, I didn't try the John Smiths. Pub is very comfortable, restaurant service was good, and children were made welcome. I woudn't hesitate to go back.
I wonder if other reviewers are expecting the facilities that might be available in a london restaurant rather than what it is, a traditional Dales pub.

I went to this pub in early December 2005. I too found the landlord offhand. There was a large board outside offering Sunday lunch. When I went to the bar to order he asked me if i had booked! If you have to book why advertise to the public!! Personally I thought the guy a jerk...
In the end he 'graciously' allowed me to order lunch.
That said, the Sunday roastlunch was probably one of the best I have ever had....and it was generous!!
Pity the landlords attitude did'nt match the quality of the food..
I would give the pub 9/10 for the food but the hospitality drags it down to 3.

i have just been in the dales on a week off i found the landlord unhelpful and rude to my children.the beer was flat and didn't taste very good at all.we asked for some sandwiches, the landlady was sat having a cigarette at the time letting it drift near our children. she got up and went in to the back where the dog was barking. i only hope that she washed her hands before making our sandwiches.when ordering the landlord seemed to be in a rush to get our money as if we were going to leave without paying for our food. whilst we were there a young man came in asking for help in finding a taxi, he gave him a card and told him where the nearest phonebox was, but did not offer to ring the taxi for him. i would not recommend this pub for food as the sandwiches we had when they came were quite dry and over priced. compared to the rest of the dales this pub is the worst i have been in with my family.

I think we must have visited this pub sometime after Angela had been in. Although it was supposed to be open all day on a Saturday, we were told at 2pm that the "kitchen was closed", The landlord was very rude when we asked "why, as it was meant to be open all day" We stayed for one drink which we did not finish, as the beer was very flat. We visit the Yorkshire Dales every year, and believe Wensleydale to be the most beautiful in the area, only to be spoiled for us by the attitude of the lanldord in the Bolton Arms. " What a shame for the villagers of Redmire"

All I can say is that Angela must have caught the landlord on a 'really' bad day. John isn't an unwelcoming landlord. Yes, they do have their regulars but their living comes from passing custom and guests and diners so they have to be friendly. Looking at their website they have extended the pub/bar area and created a new dining room. I hope when I visit again that it hasn't spoilt the place. It has a certain charm that I have never found anywhere else. It's set in a village nestled in the Dales - very peaceful except for the occassional 'moo' from the farm next door. The Sunday lunch is wonderful, the meat fresh and succulant and plenty of it. As for the comments on steaks made by Angela I don't know if they are frozen but if that is so then you can guarantee that they will have been bought from the same butcher he gets his other meat from and will not affect the taste at all.
This pub is for down to earth people not prentitious posh gits. The area is fantastic for walking and is close to Leyburn if you get fed up with Redmire.
The accommodation is spotless and the breakfasts filling and tasty. Proper bacon etc. Book for Sunday lunch as it is very popular.

reading the comments above i am extremly shocked as we have stayed at this pub many years in a row. We have found the hosts to be pleasant and welcoming. The beer was always fresh and my partner regularly enjoyed a pint with the landlord. I am sure that any problems that we may of had would of been addressed and i feel it is a shame that others have felt the need to speak badly of the wonderful hosts and amazingly generous portions layed out for reasonable prices. The setting is exquisite but dont take my word for it - go see for yourself. If you dont i would be amazed!

We stayed at this pub in the summer and found the landlord very rude and not allowing residents to have a drink after 11pm. There was no choice for breakfast and steaks had to be ordered in advance so that they could be 'thawed out' Not made at all welcome and beer was hit and miss depending on the day you went in. We were surpised by the lack of customers in the evening. Pub itself is small but delightful and set in a lovely village, but the landlord and his wife spoil this wonderful place by their attitude towards visitors.

A former farm this lovely pub offers b&b accommodation in the old stable block. The pub has limited seating ( at the moment, they are planning extending ) no noisy bandits or jukebox. Massive Sunday lunch at 5.95 with melt in the mouth REAL tasty meat. Booking advisable. Evening meals also available at around 7.
A gem of a pub in a wonderful village. I really shouldn't have told you about it!
