Chef and brewer - so you know exactly what to expect. Clean. Decent beer. Expensive.
Nothing to really report. But there seemed such little choice in the centre of Gerrards Cross.

Fine, this is not a classic British pub. It is, however what is available.
I go relatively frequently to the Ethorpe, and am generally relatively satisfied. On my last visit they were offering CAMRA discounts (which comehow was offered to the soft drinks on my round as well as the real ale) and had three ales on hand pump. One was one of the usual suspects as mentioned in Gann's post of last June, but two others were delightful hoppy numbers (one session strength, one a bit stronger) I'd never come across before.
Not a pub I'd travel any distance to get to, but for an after-work pint it does the trick. It's not by any stretch of the imagination bad, despite the assorted suits and ladies who lunch types suits giving me evil looks because I dared to sit at a table by myself while waiting for friends to join me!

The exclusive Buckinghamshire village of Gerrards Cross is said to be one of England’s most desirable places to live and is often referred to as ‘mini Hollywood’ due to its celebrity residents.
This would go some way to explain why there is no traditional pubs left within miles of the village and it is now populated by high end Gastro restaurants which attract people with more money than sense..
And the Chef and Brewer owned Ethorpe Hotel is now the only remaining place in the Village where you can get a beer in anything resembling a pub atmosphere.
Marketed by C&B as a Pub Restaurant and Hotel its clear focus is on food, and the majority of the internal space is set for dining. But fortunately the area by and to the right of the bar is set aside as a comfortable seating drinking area, and then there is a very pleasant outside garden space to the front of the building with a couple of sheltered gazebos and metal tables and chairs.
Actually internally it is quite a nice traditional styled but clearly modern oaked beamed bricked walled décor with lots of heavy wood tables and the bar does support three real ale hand pumps which were dispensing GK IPA, London Pride and St Austell’s Tribute. So hardly exciting but at least my pint of Tribute was perfectly passable. And the standard C&B pub food menu was available.
So OK for my one visit, but god forbid if I was to live anywhere where the only pub offering within walking distance was one like this one.
But somehow I don’t think that bothers the populous of Gerrards Cross, and those that do like a beer would have filled up in a Central London boozer before commuting back to their beer desert residence.

I know one of the waiters there so I couldn't have been made more welcome there! Nice range of drinks and a very sedate atmosphere which is sometimes what you need if you can't face a loud chain pub with shite music blaring out deafeningly. I think it's more of a restaurant and I'd not normally go into a place as posh as this, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Fantastic in every way.
Food good, staff lovely and all real individuals. Great mix of races classes countries professionals drunkards elderly, businessmen, unemployed. Good music. Lovely zimbabwean bar manager! great phillappino waitress and is full of open fires and candles. Would luv to live there! Anna

Pretentious and appalling, and full of people who think they are somewhere special - highly unlikely in a Chef & Brewer! It will be good company for the new Tesco opposite if and when it is finally built. If you are looking for a good pub Gerrards Cross is not a place to be - I know as I live next to it.

ABSOLUTELY BEATIFUL HOTEL AND RESTAURANT. DEFINATELY THE BEST CHEF AND BREWER IVE VISITED. HUGE MENU ALL NEATLY WRITTEN ON CHALK BOARDS. ALL CANDLE-LIT WITH LOVELY WARM AMOSPHERE. A CHARMING PLACE, WOULD DEFINATELY RETURN.
