This Pub has shut ! , dont know why exactly but suspect its because it wasn't making money and the management were unable to control the local pond life which meant they had to keep spending money on security people . Roman Road Market used to have at least 5 pubs in one form or another ,Hand and Flower , Denmark Arms, The Trader + a couple more - all shut .

Visited on Tues 6th Aug 2010. Beer good, Food OK. Service OK, Toilets dubious. Hardly any body in lunchtime. Attempted return Fri 6th Aug. CLOSED. Wetherspoons sign down. Adjacant traders said "Gone bust". What has happened here?

This is a barn-like Wetherspoons in a challenging area. I think it is good that JDW are persevering with it. I called in on a Saturday lunchtime when the market was in full swing outside. Clientele were a mixture of older characters having a drink and a chat and some parents with children. All seemed nice people when I was there. The staff were very knowledgeable and helpful and took an interest in the beer. I confined myself to Ruddles (it was lunchtime and I had things to do later!) and found it very acceptable indeed.

Under new management as of Dec 2009 - I hope they have better luck controlling the local Pond Life than previous Managers . The beers were 1.65 a pint and in good nick , you cant grumble at the prices. It appears to be a kind of pre-meet venue for people who are going clubbing , particularly at weekends . This is where they come to tank up on cheap alcohol I would suggest . 2-3 door security people who will check you over if they want too . A large cavernous pub that can hold a couple hundred people . Many other local pubs have shut , ie Hand & Flower , The Trader , + a couple of others . If you want a good local the Eleanor Arms is easily the best pint in the area , about a 5 minute walk .

what a hole. you can never need a drink so badly as to have to go here. down and outs inside, drug dealers outside. gave a cig to a woman once who then skinned up in the beer garden while her young daughter climbed a barbed wire fence. avoid

Although the staff in this pub are helpful and friendly, I would highly recommend to avoid this pub. Fights between customers take place on a regular basis and one should stay away to simply not get involved accidentally. Gangs of youngsters hang around, provoking passer-bys, and the police are present on an almost daily basis. No, I am NOT exaggerating - I live nearby.

dire, the only word to describe it, flat beer and rude staff

I visited this pub fairly recently and it was pretty awful. The first pint of real ale was sour and the other choice was uninspiring, so I went for the Abbott. The staff were going through the motions like zombies and the only time anything lively happened was when the barmaid pinched the barman's bum. This pub was put up for sale by Wetherspoons but obviously there were no takers. The area is going down hill fast with the ASDA supermarket having closed down. In all very depressing.

As someone said before a lot of trouble there at weekends... why do they insist on letting these youngsters get drunk on hooch just to make a quick buck!

1 Million pound Wetherspoon pub, I used to come to this pub all the time since it 1st opened up until about 6 months ago. The staff are helpful and friendly, being a Wetherspoon the drinks were cheap, and typically or untypically depending on your experiences with Wetherspoon grub, the food was actually very good. Very large big pub. However, there is a downside - after spending 1 million creating and opening this pub - why did Wetherspoons not invest in security on Friday nights? (the only time I went) My friends and I stopped going to this pub simply because of all the fights and trouble that occurred - mainly caused by local youths / chavs - that seemed to be allowed in despite many not 'looking' 18 in my opinion. Towards the end, they started to get 2-3 security gaurds but the touble didnt seem to stop, (2-3 gaurds onto 15 youths not really gonna work is it)? On a number of occasions one of my mates (worked security at another east end bar) had to step in and help secuirty break up fights. On the last 3 occasions I went Police were called to break up the fight that had eventually spilled outside. Would loved for this to have been my local, but definately one to avoid on Friday / Saturday nights unless they have permanantly employed several security staff or started a policy of banning any baseball cap / Burberry wearing local youths from entering.

It's a barn. Wetherspoons (I think) pub-by-numbers. Cheap promo drinks and microwaved food. I'd rather take my chances in one of the real East End boozers anywhere else on Roman Road.
