Sigh! Yet again I get into an argument with one of the bar staff about underfilling my pint by 10%. She just kept prattling on about how the law allows her to underfill it by 5% - it might do, but the code of practice says that if someone asks for it to be topped up then it should be done with good grace. Other staff are great - it's just *her*.

I was on a first date and it was slightly embarrassing to get into an argument with that enormously fat barmaid with the blank stare and zero personality. Please Mark, get rid of her..

The food is inconsistent and over priced. The bar is well stocked and has a nice look to it (if a little faded) The staff have virtually no product knowledge and seem to believe that "fill lines" are where the head of a pint should be. This could be a great venue with a little maintenance and training!

I've enjoyed my last few trips in here. In the past I have bought my wife here to eat. They have a great menu and good wine selection. Beers have a good choice as well. Sharps Doom Bar, purity UBU, Moor beer company somerton gold and copper dragon black gold. Also has 8 continental beers and a spirit collection that not many places could rival. If your every in leamington I recommend this place to everyone.

Popped in for a Pint of Cask Ale at 4.30 this afternoon....nothing wrong with it, or the service from the Staff. I intend to revisit one evening...the Wine Club on a Tuesday looks interesting.

Went there for Sunday lunch and a few beers with friends, great place, reasonably priced good food and ok selection of beers and ales. I like the relaxed furnishings and the randomness of the place. Had a great outside covered area wth heaters for the smokers.

Friendly, chatty staff.

Recommend highly although haven't been there on a busy night.

It's not my regular kind of place, but I do like it. It does get awfully busy at weekend, but each time I have been, it's two-deep at the bar yet I've managed to get served quickly and efficiently by the young girls behing the bar (No, my name is not Brad Pitt!)

My friend and I popped out for a smoke and the doorman kept an eye on our drinks & pistachio nuts and most importantly our table - people would kill for a table in that place!!

So even at the worst time of day, I have found the staff to be very amenable.

Mind you, I've always found that politeness return politeness....

Oh yes, they do Wiess Bier also. Had few of them and then a very entertaining bicycle ride home !!!! :-)

Not a bad place for a lively hight out with mates - although the quality of the beer it very up and down. Ordering food here is just asking for trouble.

The manager of the place has a real attitude problem i've seen him engage in pointless arguments with customers.

I went to the White Horse for Sunday lunch this weekend just gone with a couple of friends. When we arrived, my friend wanted a pint of ale on tap, only to be told (one by one) that all the ales he had asked for were off & that he would have to wait for the new ones to be put on. We then ordered food to be told that the card machine wasn't working, and that we would have to pay cash. 40 mins after ordering our food & it not arriving, my other friend went to ask about it, & was told that it would be arriving in a minute (although there was no apology for the wait). When the food arrived (with apology), it was very nice - I had the lasagne and it was a good sized portion & very tasty. However, we sat there for a further 40 mins after finishing, and by the time we left the pub, no one had come to clear away our plates. This was despite the pub not being particularly busy.

Things I like about the pub - the board games, the sweets behind the bar, and one girl who served me initially who was very friendly and apologetic. Newspapers were available. The range of beers & ciders is good, when they manage to have them all on.

However, I think the White Horse really needs to get the basics right - the quirkiness of the games and sweets doesn't make up for bad service & poor attention to detail. The female toilets could do with a good clean (I can't vouch for the gents), and in fact I got that impression about the whole place.

I must stress that I don't have a grudge against this pub (!). When it had first been refurbished a couple of years ago, I had a fabulous Sunday lunch for a friend's birthday, and the service was very good. I also spent the evening there on New Year's Eve 2008 and had a really good night. From both of these experiences, I had been recommending the place to others. However, I get the impression that complacency has set in from a management perspective. It's a real shame as it could be such a great pub.

To back up a previous comment, unfortunately a friend of mine was also treated quite badly by the manager around a year ago. My view is that everyone makes mistakes, but in the service industry it is how you make up for these mistakes that makes the difference between your customers wanting to bad-mouth a place and wanting to recommend it to others. Unfortunately, if you are treated badly, you are very likely to tell lots of people about it, and less likely to do so if you have a good experience.

Please - if you are White Horse staff seeing this - please do something about it! The pub could be so much better, especially as the food was really quite nice. There is plenty of competition for good food & nice pubs in Leamington, so there is every reason to sort these things out.
drinkingbadger - 6 Jul 2009 12:12
Not a pub for the discerning drinker. Loud and brash. Fine for its target audience, but not for us. Each to their own.
imdownthepub - 23 Nov 2008 11:15
Sounds to me like mr wishy-washy can not read or understand what is written. Im all for letting people have there say. But my issue was the claims that are not opinion - as false claims can damage a business. Please refer back to previous review postings if this makes no sense.

And i can honestly say that i do not work there. So hope that answers your question.

And least your feedback on here was constructive. Sounds like you were treated with some discourtesy and no one wants that. Like i say iv always been treated really good and i love the place... but if what you say happened, did and was the manager or duty manager then that really is not on... i hope they are reading this and taking note. Im sure they will as it sounds out of character
hudsonellis - 20 Apr 2008 22:42
Maybe hudsonellis needs to let people have their say, sounds to me like he works there......?
I have 2 opinions of The White Horse. In the evening good bar and great beer!
At lunchtime food is pants and service poor (manager mainly). I was eating with my mum on Friday and on ordering our food we had a reservation paper flung on our table which was for 30 minutes later. There was no explanation or appology. I did complain but the manager who was so rude did not attempt to resolve the situation.
There is better food in Leamington so I would avoid at lunchtime and the evening but definately worth going in for a beer at the weekend.
michywishywoo - 15 Apr 2008 10:40
What silliness is this.

Sounds like davebatt69 and dillon!!! are lovers that have a bit of a problem.

Shame on who? Shame on you nut-job. Why try and name and shame people. It even looks like you are making it up. I very much doubt that you called the manager and got abuse back. It reads as one big fat lie.

Get a life bud... or if you really have an issue go in and see the nice folks at the white horse - they have always been great to me and my friends.

And if any of you out there reading this are interested, go in and form your own opinion and come back and post you views
hudsonellis - 18 Mar 2008 13:44
I am not sure if the the previous comment is on the correct pub? Every time i have been there the food has been awesome and the service great. You got to expect to wait some time with the size of the pub but i have always thought the staff to be pleasant.

Don't you just love the board games and the chilled environment and relaxed sofas, my ideal pub.If you visit leamington i would suggest this is a must.

The previous commenter must have a grudge or some vendetta against the pub.

See you there soon.

davebatt69 - 12 Mar 2008 15:54
everything about this pub was awful from the first moment i stepped through the door, the door staff were rude and carried a very similar attitude as the bar staff, the place was crowded, untidy and the hygiene levels of the toilets left a lot to be desired,

i had heard great things avout this venue but was very disatisfied

i would warn anyone to not step through the doors to the white horse lemaington spa

i also rang the manager Mark Thordycraft to give him some constructive feedback, he had no interest in listening to me in the slightest, he infact swore and gave me abuse over the phone

shame on you
dillonsaunders - 12 Mar 2008 13:04
Best pub in leamington (and maybe even warwickshire)

Comments from fools that cant prove anything should not make comments regarding eating anywhere and alleged related illness. If this is the case and you think the two are related you should go see your dr or shut up. The fact you have no proof and it is not even about opinion which is what this site is for is reason enough for the last comment to be taken of by the sites hosts.

I eat here all the time and have never had a problem. Love the place. Great staff... always friendly. Tasty food and nice atmosphere.

Lovely range of drinks and served in some great glasses.

Some smashing little touches all around the place - really make this pub stand out. A great home from home.

Some nice live jazz every so often and a great 'real pub' quiz

Over all nice pub. It's what a local pub should be... glad i found it. Keep it up

P.S

Love the sweets - a new classic retro collection of sweets is a nice new addition. Just what i was talking about regarding nice little touches that make all the difference.

This pub needs to be seen
hudsonellis - 7 Mar 2008 23:54
Can anyone tell me if the food has improved yet ?????, i really don't want to risk sickness again.
davebatt69 - 23 Jan 2008 11:08
Amazing transformation from its previous existence, the Horse is classy and has an excellent range of beers - some cask ales and a nice range of good european lager. Decent outside area and usually excellent music; last time I was there we were treated to Bowie, Ben Folds, Beck, acoustic Smashing Pumpkins...
badgercentral - 7 Jul 2007 22:27
That plastic white horse is quite scarey after a few pints! Not a bad pub though, little on the expensive side and short measures but apart from that, recommended.
TheJester - 11 Jun 2007 16:02
Good compromise between town centre bar and pub. Cask beer OK but not stunning - the number of beers 'on' has diminshed somewhat over the last couple of months. Weston's draught cider is dangerous!
numberoneson - 29 May 2007 19:55
I whent to the White Horse last Friday (23rd Feb 07) and was surprised by the music being played by a group of Dj's there. Not only did they drop tunes like Fat Freddys Drop, plus lots of new downbeat/funk and good hiphop tunes they also played some awesome Broken Beat. Over all the White Horse seemed to have a great atmosphere, good range of different beers on tap and great music. The same Dj's will be playing this Friday (2nd March) so I will be there!

Actually, the legally required level in oversized glasses is still with 5% head, so your pint should have a small head that starts just below the line. The line measures a full pint, so if the liquid goes all the way up to the line you have 5% more than you should have. just ask weights and measures!
anonymous - 21 Jan 2007 19:57
Great pub, one of our favourites since it had its makeover. Superb selection of beers. However, watch out for the Andy Murray lookalike barman, who always underfills the pint by loads - it took ages to persuade him that the line on the glass means that the liquid has to be filled to that level. Such a jobsworth, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth if you've paid the exprbitant 3.80 for your Franziskaner and young Andy here refuses to fill it to the legally required level. Grr!

anonymous - 21 Jan 2007 01:40
Cavernous but still cosy, a bit cool perhaps, but most importantly there it was cosy, great choice of continental style beers and lots of cask ale. I only wish the paintwork wasn't so grungy - I reckon parts of it would look fresher and smarter if lightened up a bit. But, where else round here can you get that much choice of Wheat Beers and also wines (Wine in the evenning?).

Its a shame JonnieB had some bad experiences here. I have to say he must just be unlucky as this place has become my new local and I have never had anything but a fantastic time here. Staff are all gorgeous and so friendly and helpful. They normally do check back, perhaps they were busy. Even so, if he had said anything Im sure they would have been more than happy to rectify the situation. I have to say though, I dont see how he can call the menu pretentious - whats pretentious about a fish finger or sausage sarnie? I have always had great food and value for money, and the range of beer is fantastic! Stunning furniture by the way, love the wallpaper, I want it in my room!
juicylou - 11 Oct 2006 03:43
Been to the new look Horse twice now for Sunday lunch. On the plus side nice decor, nice atmosphere excellent range of beers. Negatives - pretentious menu which is let down by quality of presentation and lack of attention to detail. When 40% of the plate is taken up by carrots its fair to say you're not getting value for money. The amount of Roast Lamb on a main course dish @ 7.90 would not have satisfied a child! Disappointingly there was no check-back by staff to see if the meal was satisfactory. Overall verdict - Coild fo a lot better.

The White Horse is back!! A completely new team have taken over this old scum pit, it reopened last week after major refurbishments, and it looks awesome. All the old features like the mirrors and doors are there but with some trendy modern touches and a cool jumbled mix of furniture. Easily the best range of beers in leamington, and they serve food till 10 which is great since no other pubs seem to! Me and my mates decided to check out the new improved version on friday and were extemely impressed with the funky atmosphere and genuinely lovely people. Pass it on! The nasty old nag is dead!!

Code red is a weekly night held every Saturday at the white horse in Leamington spa. The night is set change the style of the weekend which includes stylish Code Red dcor, dancers and more. Lunched in spring last year, Code Red was originally held on Fridays at club mirage. Staying true to its sexy n stylish theme, Code Red has become one of the most successful nights in the spa town. Best way to find out is by coming to next Code Red! and to make it even better you get a free shot with flyers!!

Working with the Management for a few months, we now feel that the White Horse has turned a major corner. All the old crowd are out and a new client base is building.

Come along and have a look, any comments about improving the bar are more than welcome and I can be contacted either on [email protected] or 07956 273685.

Thanks for your time!

the main part of the pub is the usual 'stand up with your drink and shout into your friend's ear' teenage hang out. The 'old boys' part of the pub at the front is small, cheap, friendly, and has furniture and fittings that haven't changed for 150 years. Well known to the mature drinkers and betting men of Leam.

Echoing what everyone else said, Id aviod this place. Seems to attract all the wrong people, including everyones favorite 'Carling Lads', who would be only too happy to stab you for walking past.

Filled with girls that are far, far too young to be in there.

Avoid.
Jamie - 4 Mar 2004 17:37
Too many girls with their thongs hanging over the top of their skirts, and BOYS looking like theyre going to stab someone any second...run for your life while you can
boris - 12 Feb 2004 09:14
I remember that it used to be good about 6 years ago. Then it went all poop.
Hot, bad music and full of 13 year olds.
Jamie - 3 Oct 2003 12:46
Good starting point for a pub crawl in Leamington. At weekends pulls in some attractive women. In house DJ means there is entertainment but it is far too loud to talk!
