A very pleasant place on the quieter side of the river in Lostwithiel.

We sat out the back which catches the afternoon sun a treat pint of ale was good too.

8/10

Only Prophecy and Tribute on this visit.
Still good enough to wash down my Steak and Ale pie.
I don't think the chef could have put any more steak in the pie - no scrimping here.

Another pleasant visit.
Ales on were: Tribute, Trelawny and Bath Ale's Prophecy.

Very busy for a Monday lunchtime - especially for the bar women's first day in her new job.
Good choice of ales: Tribute, Trelawny, Best and Liquid Sunshine.
Excellent food and very friendly local chaps at the bar.
Very nice.

Small village pub tied to St Austell brewery.

Interior divided in to two, one larger area for eating and a smaller area which serves as the bar. Inviting seating area outside at the rear of the pub.

Pleasant enough, beer in good condition, nothing particularly special.

Called in last Friday for lunch and pint. Very inviting pub, friendly staff and locals. Food was good, beer was good, good ambience. Would have revisited had it not been my last day in the area!

have just returned home from staying at this b&b and found my stay there very nice. People were very friendly and food and service was extremely good. The room was of good size, warm and with a comfortable bed and tv. Food was very nice husband was pleased with both the curry and the chilli.
All in all a very nice place to stay. Thank you to all the staff who made our stay a pleasant one.

An excellent pub, pleasant food, well kept ale, and as I stayed for B&B can say very well maitained. The two women that run it , at least at time of writing, are professional and warm. Good local chatter if you like to socialise. Great pub.

We stayed at the Earl of Chatham for a long weekend - Friday 16th to Monday 19th October 09. The pub changed hands about 3 weeks ago and is now being run by mother and daughter team Jackie and Katie. The accommodation was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We ate in the restaurant each night and found the menu to be the usual "pub grub" but nicely cooked, well presented and served in a friendly but unobtrusive way. The ingredients were locally produced and delicious. We can particularly recommend the steak and ale pie and the turkey and ham pie. The new landladies and the locals that we met in the bar were very friendly. We will definitely stay here again and would recommend it to anyone thinking of visiting the area. The Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan, Fowey and St Austell are all within easy reach.

This pub has a very friendly welcome,a true locals meeting place. Had three cornish ales all well kept. No food, pool table, small garden in rear.

I recently travelled to Lostwithiel from the Texas, before leaving I check reviews on this website for an idea of where to go. I went to the Earl of Chatam dispite some of th comments on here. The Landlord was a very friendly gentleman who made my wife and I very welcome, seemed genuine in his interest in our visit and made us feel at home, this also came accross from the patrons who were friendly and warm. If you are visiting go check this place out, I didn't get chance to try the food although it did look and smell good. Thank you to everyone for a good evening.

holidayed in lostwithiel recently with my family, parents, inlaws and two dogs and from the various pubs we ate and drank in we found the earl of chatham to be the most hospitable. the landlord were extremely friendly as were all the staff, the rattler cider became a favourite, children and pets were embraced and the locally reared steak is a must.a real gem of a pub and definately worth a visit

Was in the Earl of Chatham last week and i must say what a nice pub it is.

The food is great and staff very friendly i have had a few pints of Guinness around the town of Lostwithiel and i must say the Chatham is the best by far.

The only negitive comment i have on the pub is the Land ladies husband who is an Oldham Fan .
Still i could put up with that as long as he keeps it to himself we had a great night in the Chatham and highly recommend to anyone

Why does ecoregular appear to want to attack other posters? must be the landlord doing his own reviews instead of paying for a listing.

Interesting that they know the date the pub had customers, normally the struggle to entice one man and his dog through the doors these days.

There are some decent pubs in Lostwithiel, this is not one of them.

In response to LostInDetail who seems to be lost in Lostwithiel (Completely), I have posted pictures 2, 3, 4 and 5, which were taken on the 27th September 2008, just to emphasize that locals do still drink at the Chatham, contrary to the comments you made and that the Chatham is thriving in terms of food and drink - oh and your comments are infactual further because actually nobody has been sacked and nobody has been turned away. Maybe Lostindetail should not stay up so late and stop having a go at pubs on here as the Chatham isn't the only pub they appear to have it in for!!

The best pub in town. Over the bridge and just out of the way of the main town centre, this is a traditional pub with great food, great people, friendly staff and service and in September they scored 100% on their ale and acheived cask marque status.

The Earl of Chatham has a new landlord (from August 2008) who, it seems, doesn't like people!

Most of the regulars have gone elsewhere.

Still, at least you never have to wait at the bar!
lostindetail - 23 Sep 2008 01:23
New Managers (August 2008) seem intent in getting rid of all customers.

People are turning up expecting to get food only to be told the food is off (whilst they try to replace the sacked kitchen staff).
Mostly the locals have relocated.

Best avoided!

Have been to this pub a few times when visiting family in the local area and it's a great pub. Good range of beer and amazing homemade food. Apparently this pub is well known for its pies so I tried the lamb & mint and it was one of the best pies I have ever tasted. Definitely worth a visit.
