The Riverside Inn is at a major roundabout in the centre of Cheddar, just at the bottom of Cheddar Gorge. It was packed on our Bank Holiday weekend Sunday afternoon visit. Inside, a live football match was just finishing. Outside, the garden was absolutely packed with kids and their families. The car park was overflowing. Finding enjoyment in such chaotic surroundings was difficult. To answer the last review (albeit over 7 years ago), they had Cheddar Ales Potholer, along with Sharp's Doom Bar & Butcombe Original.

Use this pub regularly and found they have stopped Potholer. It may be back at Easter but, until then, Cornish or Devon beers are available on draft, it seems that they are serving stuff you can find in most big towns!

Stopped in a few times over the last couple days and had some lovely Potholer

Visited last night with a companion of the distaff persuasion, and I was very pleased that I did. Main bar was fairly busy, as the peasants had been watching some "sport" on one of those new-fangled television things, so we went in t'other side, where we perched on barstools and tried Otter, Tribute, Spitfire and Cheddar Ales' Potholer. All in excellent condition, but quite a range of prices. The service was spot on, and I'm fairly sure I counted eight or more black-clad ninja staff, who ensured no-one waited long to be served. We didn't eat here, as we were heading for the fish and chip restaurant across the road. Come to think of it, most of the diners were out in what looked like a conservatory extension, so diners and drinkers were apart, which is no bad thing if there's room. 8/10

Had the worst meal we'd had in Cheddar in the Gardeners Arms. The Riverside is usually busy, both for food and for drink. the Gardeners is dead as a dodo. Decide for yourself. I've eaten in both and the riverside is good value pub grub.

Went in for a family meal twice this week. Food on both occasions was good so was the various cask ales on offer/ ciders Staff friendly too. would recommend

Thatchers Traditional cider, in good condition when I tried it.Didn't try the food.

Reasonable family pub, good selection of beers, garden with kids play area, good food selection in restaurant area, reasonably priced but service a bit slow. Sports bar to one side.

Having passed this place on numerous occasions, on visits to Cheddar i at last the other week decided to pop in. I can't say i was impressed ,it looks and feels like a tourist pub, with the hint of minor trouble lurking in the background. Service and the drink i had was fair, but didn't fancy trying the food,so all in all not very impressed.Place could be a goldmine in the right hands.

I totally agree with cleaveman and totally disagree with awkward. The Gardeners Arms is a fantastic place to visit with charming staff, great food and its CLEAN.
From what I have seen of the other pubs in Cheddar its no wonder its the highest rated.
As for the Riverside well what can I say. Young customers half of which look under age, food not good, cider undrinkable. Take it from me if you visit stick to the garden!!!

I totally disagree with these comments ; the gardeners arms will always continue to give the riverside inn a good run for there money. Excellant food; Excellant service; Excellant value However what I will say is that the cat fight between two the ladies in the beer garden on my last visit to the riverside inn was a bounus? Really jazzed up the night a bit.

The Riverside keeps going from strength to strength and is now by far the best food pub in Cheddar (sadly the nearby Gardners Arms, that used to give it a run for its money, is going down hill).
The local ales served here are yet another reason to visit, if the food, location (large beer garden next to the river) and friendly service aren't enough for you.

lovely big beer garden 4 the summer months and a wonderful pint of cheddar ale,9/10

Pricey food, didnt quite work as a restaurant. the local cider was nice/hallucinogenic/strong though, so do partake of this if nothing else.
|
Food a bit over prices, or you'd expect to have it presented alot better for the price paid. The Thatchers cider is quite sensational from this place however, and will bite back with its deceptively watery taste. Bit rough and in need of touching up, so if you can stick to the garden, which is nice.

more a large pub than restaurant prices for pub food a little high, better value in the village
