The smell of disinfectant was noticeable this afternoon but the pint of Otter was very tasty albeit slightly cold. Tribute also available. The welcome was neutral.

Don't judge a book by its cover! Looks lovely on the outside - shame the staff have an attitude problem. We arrived with 2 kids and were immediately made to feel unwelcome. The locals in the pub were very friendly and when one offered us his seats I was abruptly told by the miserable individual behind the bar that we were not 'allowed' sit there. This is something I have never experienced before.
We ordered food and when we enquired after 40 minutes as to when we would get it we were again made to feel insolent for asking! Is it unfair to ask after we have bought drinks and paid for food?! Food is rubbish by the way.
Overall a nice looking place, but avoid at all costs if you value a warm welcome. Seems to me they live off tourists who visit just the once and couldn't care less whether you enjoy being there or not as long as they have your hard earned cash.

One of the better pubs in bideford. Quite a welcoming atmoshere and a good location near the quay. 8/10

Used to always try to get to the Kings by 8 o'clock, rarely left before 11. Great in the 70's still just as good I hope.

Lovely welcoming pub. Great range of beer and jolly good food. Friendly staff and locals. Nice BB letting rooms and large cooked breakfast

Bideford currently has no pubs in the Good Beer Guide. Why isn't this one in it? It's one of only three decent pubs in the town centre. Actually, there are maybe four - but this one at least deserves to be in the Guide. Has someone upset CAMRA?

Visited 2 and 3 Oct 2009. Good selection of ales, the local Grenville beer was tried and was in fine fettle, could have had Broadside, Youngs, Doombar amongst the six on. Thatchams premium on tap and the usual 166, Guinness etc.
Busy on Saturday, but service good and atmosphere mellow and a better choice than most other town centre pubs, that said, out of season , Bideford is pretty mellow
Will return on next visit

Nice old pub overlooking the harbour in Bideford. Sharps Doom Bar, Adnams Broadside, Youngs Bitter, Exmoor Ale and Jollyboat Grenville's Reknown were all on handpull. The cider was Thatchers Premium. A much more pleasant experience than the Appledore Inn.

Nice pub, great location and pleasant atmosphere. Used by locals and holiday-makers alike.

Best pub in Bideford, I would say. About six handpumps with the likes of Spitfire, Hobgoblin, Exmoor, Adnam's, the local Grenville's Reknown from Jollyboat all in pretty good nick. On previous visits the beer quality has been a bit patchy, but they seem to have got that sorted.

Nice friendly boozer - love the tiny "cabin" at one end of the bar - like having your own private room.

This used to be a regular haunt of mine but this is the first time i've been back for 8 or 9 years and it was great to find that nothing has really changed (except for the abscence of the crazy beermat-retrieving collie). This really is a cracking little pub with excellent beer, friendly staff, a good local atmosphere, proper home-cooked food and a great quayside location (tho' unfortunately separated from it by the main road :( ).
The menu is pretty comprehensive with all the pub classics represented ranging from "chip butties", through a range of sandwiches, jacket potatoes, ploughmans etc. and some more substantial main courses - none of which are wallet-bustin'!!!
This place is well worth a visit if you enjoy the simple things in life!

Beer quality was patchy on my last visit. Service excellent and friendly punters, though.
|
Beware - if you book a room at this pub they take a deposit of 50 which is non returnable even if you cancel over a month in advance.

Not at all bad. Decent beer, friendly staff, not over-run by kids.
|
Lovely pub, right on the quay. Friendly barstaff, decent ale and a few characters in there too. Pretty comfortable inside and it's retained it's 'olde' feel. A big plus in my book.

Large, low ceilinged place on the quayside, just at the end of the 'old' bridge. Nice pint of Spitfire. Looks like it's had a fairly recent refit, but none the worse for that. Lots of beams and posts in the tap room, and an very large array of spirits. Pretty good.
